Sun­day is Father’s Day, so let’s draw our own dads on Sat­ur­day and take them home as gifts for them.
This class is taught by Teacher Yang Zhong, who is the per­son in Han­miao Soci­ety who is most close­ly con­nect­ed with pic­ture books: she teach­es pic­ture books at the Cen­tral Acad­e­my of Fine Arts, con­ducts research and exchanges on pic­ture books all year round, is a prac­ti­tion­er who uses pic­ture books to cul­ti­vate chil­dren’s growth, and is also a pic­ture book author her­self.
Teacher Yang chose “Fei Fei Is Angry” as today’s open­ing for a rea­son. This pic­ture book per­fect­ly uses col­or to con­vey human emo­tions. Angry Fei Fei is sur­round­ed by red, while calm Fei Fei is embraced by blue. The intense col­ors cre­ate a sense of fer­vor, while the calm col­ors con­vey a sense of sta­bil­i­ty and peace. Col­or is tru­ly won­drous, as unpre­dictable and cap­ti­vat­ing as human emo­tions. Teacher Yang asked the chil­dren to pick up their paint­brush­es and draw two dif­fer­ent expres­sions of their father’s emo­tions on two wood­en boards: a smil­ing father and an angry father.
We have two eyes. We should look with­in our­selves to dis­cov­er our aes­thet­ic poten­tial, and we should also look around to learn and observe life. Teacher Yang encour­ages chil­dren to use col­ors bold­ly. There are no norms to con­strain you, so why should you be con­strained? Make the most of the wood­en board, draw the per­son large, and fill the board. When draw­ing a father, imag­ine what he looks like (a kind of mnemon­ic heuris­tic train­ing that allows for greater cre­ativ­i­ty and is more impor­tant for young chil­dren than draw­ing from a mod­el). Square, round, or point­ed face, with or with­out glass­es, with or with­out a beard, and so on. The teacher’s inspi­ra­tion is just a flick of the switch for imag­i­na­tion; after that, it’s up to the chil­dren.

Help­ing out today were Teacher Niao and Sis­ter Zijia. Teacher Big Bear, as usu­al, was busy run­ning around, wel­com­ing and see­ing off stu­dents.
