Putting the world on a desk was anoth­er brain­child of Bird and Bear. One gnaw­ing on a bird’s claw, the oth­er rub­bing a bear’s paw, they envi­sioned cre­at­ing not only the sev­en con­ti­nen­tal plates but also the four oceans and water, cre­at­ing a three-dimen­sion­al world map with both land and sea. They imme­di­ate­ly set to work. After a week of exper­i­men­ta­tion and hard work, Bird and Bear cre­at­ed their vision of “the world on a desk.” This unique­ly Han and Miao world map would also fea­ture a true news sto­ry: “The Rub­ber Bath Duck­’s Jour­ney Around the World.”
   
Here’s what hap­pened:

In 1992, a car­go ship car­ry­ing a toy fac­to­ry set out from Guang­dong, Chi­na, intend­ing to cross the Pacif­ic Ocean to Wash­ing­ton State, USA. How­ev­er, after trav­el­ing 4,000 miles, the ship encoun­tered a severe storm, and a con­tain­er filled with 29,000 yel­low plas­tic toy ducks fell into the sea and shat­tered. All the toy ducks float­ed to the sur­face, form­ing a mas­sive “duck fleet,” which has been drift­ing ever since. 

In the first three years, 19,000 ducks com­plet­ed a 6,800-mile trip through the Pacif­ic Sub­trop­i­cal Gyre—a cur­rent that swirls around the edge of the Pacif­ic Ocean, pass­ing Indone­sia, Aus­tralia, South Amer­i­ca, and Hawaii. Anoth­er group of about 10,000 ducks were thrown out of the cur­rent and drift­ed north.

When they drift­ed to the Bering Strait between Rus­sia and Alas­ka, the “Duck Fleet” was frozen in the ice and slow­ly drift­ed 2,000 miles toward the North Pole. Then, the “Duck Fleet” began to drift south again, and after drift­ing 4,000 miles south, it arrived in Nova Sco­tia, Cana­da, near the Unit­ed States. When the ice thawed, the ducks drift­ed 2,000 miles to the east coast of the Unit­ed States.

   
Sci­en­tists are study­ing the drift­ing routes of these ducks to under­stand the secrets of ocean cur­rents and the Arc­tic ice cap.
A “gold rush” of ocean enthu­si­asts formed the “Duck Chasers” to mon­i­tor the progress of the “Duck Fleet.” When­ev­er the “Duck Fleet” was about to reach a cer­tain coast, they would fran­ti­cal­ly flock to the beach to grab these famous ducks. Col­lec­tors were fetch­ing upwards of £1,000 per duck.

   
Today, these 10,000 ducks con­tin­ue to drift south, and after many unex­pect­ed twists and turns and hard­ships, they final­ly arrive at their orig­i­nal des­ti­na­tion. Their total drift­ing jour­ney is 22,000 miles and it took 14 years.

We can only imag­ine their adven­tures on the sea, and that’s exact­ly what Bird and Bear hope chil­dren will do:

The world of desks awaits children—the rooms of Han­miao Cre­ative Gar­den. The first floor is where chil­dren attend class­es, and the sec­ond floor is where pic­ture books are read. We have thou­sands of excel­lent pic­ture books for chil­dren to enjoy, includ­ing orig­i­nal works by Han­miao and Qiy­ibao.
