At night, we reinforced the dam
June 13, 2008: Detective Radish’s Notes at Ren’ai School, Qunxin Village (Quanxin Village), Hanwang Town, Mianzhu, Sichuan
Because a thunderstorm was forecast today, the children were told not to come to school. However, some of them still showed up around 6 a.m. to help us sort the books and re-shelve them. We quickly sent them back when the sky turned cloudy.
Just yesterday, something unforgettable happened. Yesterday, the landslide-dammed lake was diverting floodwaters. I heard the flow was out of control, the water level surged, and it suddenly burst the bridge. Wang Wei and his friends from the Ren Ai Foundation, who had come from Mianzhu to visit, were stranded and unable to return. Fortunately, after over an hour, the floodwaters receded below the bridge. That afternoon, fearing flooding would submerge the roads, the children from the school were evacuated early. They were divided into groups within the village and escorted home by volunteers. While we were waiting for dinner, several volunteers stationed at the bottom of the slope brought word that the floodwaters from the landslide-dammed lake were so large that the existing embankment might not be able to withstand them. They urgently needed manpower. All the volunteers present, except for Xiao Feng, a girl, and me, who was too willing and unable to go, all responded! Xiong Liang took action with such gusto, not even realizing he was a step ahead of the rest of the post-80s generation. It was not until 1 a.m. that they came back covered in mud. It turned out that they were filling sacks with sand in the Hetao area. The People’s Liberation Army soldiers came in rounds, but they kept working with their passion. Whenever they felt exhausted, they drank the eggs and porridge sent by the villagers, and then started working hard again.
