Oh my God, is there really no way?

On June 14th, heavy rain caused significant damage to the camp, primarily due to the muddy ground, leaking volunteers’ tents, and the upper paddy fields threatening to overflow and even submerge the school. We worked together to find a solution. Three veteran volunteers from the Chengdu Volunteer Center arrived. Although we had previously mentioned this, we were unable to arrange for them, and we made it clear that we could not accommodate them. However, these three volunteers nonetheless joined in on the work to revamp the camp. They clearly possessed greater experience, and after half a day of working in the rain, they temporarily alleviated the three aforementioned issues. However, the heavy rains over the next few days will undoubtedly cause further problems. Therefore, we invited two of these volunteers to stay and join the team.

And more importantly — make a bowl of instant noodles. I haven’t had hot water for days!

3. June 15th was a sunny morning, but the bamboo forest base of Ren’ai School in Qunxin Village was extremely muddy. We discussed with the local teacher, Mr. Xiong (temporary principal), and decided to suspend classes for a day to thoroughly repair the base and see if it could be maintained regardless of weather conditions.

Nine Articles of Agreement

On the morning of June 15th, Ajia, Lin Yiwei, and Zhao Tiezhu first went to the temporary primary school in Niubi Village, Renai School, to see if classes could be held. They found it also muddy, but the ground there was open, making it easier to divert the water. They then asked three more volunteers to go there and raise the classrooms to divert the water. After a morning of hard work, the classrooms at that primary school were basically accessible regardless of weather.

The kids had a blast too.

At noon on June 15th, with the help of Teacher Xiong, we had locals bring in two tractors of coal ash from a bridge about 5 kilometers away. Then everyone worked together to pave the grounds with coal ash. Working until almost 8 p.m., we finally covered the entire grounds with a thick layer of red coal ash. Renai School had become a red school!

At around 9 p.m. on June 15th, heavy rain fell again. This time, the ground at the base withstood the test, but the tarpaulin awning we had set up the day before leaked again, and the volunteers’ tents were once again exposed to the rain.
Volunteer composition:
Ajia and Lin Yiwei are from Beijing; Zhao Tiezhu, Yu Xiaowen, and four others were recommended by the Chengdu Volunteer Center; and Dai Xiping and Zhang Jun, both veterans, came on their own (also from the Chengdu Volunteer Center). All volunteers have skills and can teach relevant courses, including two veterans. We plan to invite them to help with introductory military training to strengthen the children’s sense of discipline and provide appropriate physical exercise classes. Ajia is currently in charge.
Urgently needed supplies
1. We urgently need colored strips of cloth or rainproof cloth that can really block out the rain, otherwise the volunteer tents will not be able to withstand the rain;

2. We urgently need cooking utensils and tableware to facilitate cooking at the base. Otherwise, the volunteers at the base will have to rely on mineral water and dry food to survive.

3. Three moisture-proof mats and four thin blankets or sleeping bags are urgently needed. The base is very cold at night, and several volunteers are not fully equipped and can only huddle together to keep warm.
