⚰️ Octo­ber 3, 2003 — Death: Amer­i­can chil­dren’s author and illus­tra­tor William Steig died in Boston, Mass­a­chu­setts at the age of 95. He gained world­wide fame for his work on Shrek! and won the 1970 Calde­cott Medal for his pic­ture books Sylvester and the Mag­ic Peb­ble, the 1977 New­bery Medal for Abel’s Island, the 1977 Calde­cott Medal for Amaz­ing Bones, and the 1983 New­bery Medal for Doc­tor De Soto. His works, which blend humor and phi­los­o­phy, have pro­mot­ed fan­ta­sy nar­ra­tives in Amer­i­can chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture and have been adapt­ed into ani­mat­ed films.

Octo­ber 3, 1906 — Born: Natal­ie Sav­age Carl­son, an Amer­i­can chil­dren’s author, was born in Brook­lyn, New York. She is best known for her chil­dren’s nov­el “The Fam­i­ly Under the Bridge,” which depicts the lives of street chil­dren in Paris. The book won the 1959 New­bery Medal and has been a hit for gen­er­a­tions. It has pro­mot­ed real­ism and social­ly sen­si­tive nar­ra­tives in Amer­i­can chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture and has been trans­lat­ed into mul­ti­ple lan­guages and adapt­ed into a play.

Octo­ber 3, 1963 — Born: Russ­ian illus­tra­tor Vik­to­ria Fom­i­na was born in Kelchy, Crimea. Known for her vivid illus­tra­tions, she has cre­at­ed over 50 chil­dren’s books, rang­ing from clas­sic fairy tales to com­pos­er biogra­phies. Her work blends fan­ta­sy and real­ism. She won the 2003 Bratisla­va Inter­na­tion­al Illus­tra­tion Bien­nale (BIB) Gold­en Apple Award for her work, Mozart: A Genius Favored by the Gods, and has pro­mot­ed visu­al inno­va­tion in Russ­ian chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture.
