School events:

Today is Sunday. It started raining again when I woke up early. Classes continued. Niubi Village School had an extra student enrolled, and they attended morning reading and cultural reading classes. Military training was suspended during the third period due to heavy rain. Teacher Lin Yiwei read “The Cat Who Lived a Million Times” to the seniors and “Two Trees” to the juniors, with very positive responses. Teacher Ajia read “Love You Forever” and “The Giving Tree” to the juniors and told the seniors about the story of the Three Kingdoms, featuring Sun and Liu Helian. The children were particularly fond of the story.

2. At Ren’ai School in Qunxin Village, classes were held as normal this morning. Teacher Xiaowen was leaving for Beijing today, reluctant to leave. He taught an art class to both the upper and lower grades, and continued to teach a few children how to draw after class. Teacher Chen Chao also gave the children a lecture on the basics of music, which was quite popular.

3. The afternoon interest and reading class at Qunxin Village School went on as usual. A girl named Pan Yuli refused to go home at noon, so another little girl, Tang Yi, accompanied her, reading and drawing. Pan Yuli’s mother and stepfather also arrived at the school, and her mother brought her some dry food. I chatted with them again and learned that this girl had been depressed and silent for over a year, for some unknown reason. I observed her and found that she truly couldn’t read, and read books solely for the pictures. So I took her to borrow a book, and she said she wanted to read “Snow White.” I found her a copy and read to her, and she listened with great interest.

The child refused to go home at noon, so his mother had to bring him some dry food.

4. This morning, the neighbor next door told us they wanted to return the cement bricks they had used as seats for their children. They were planning to rebuild their pigpen, and the pigs were exposed to the rain and sun, which would cause them significant financial losses. Furthermore, these bricks were hard to come by. We had no choice but to agree, and this afternoon we all worked together to help them move the bricks back. But what would happen to the older children without these bricks? We approached another neighbor and asked to borrow some bricks, paying 50 cents per brick to return them when we left in a month or so. The neighbor was very welcoming and usually invited us to his house to fetch water. He readily agreed, saying it was free. However, we still had to give him the money. We spent the afternoon helping him clear the rubble before finally bringing back the bricks. By the time we had arranged the new bricks, it was already 7:30.

5. Around 7 p.m., Xiao Yi brought three more volunteers to the Renai School. They were going to Qunli Village to set up a new tent school. Before they settled in, they wanted to share meals at the camp.

At noon, Teacher Xue from Chengdu came to visit us again and brought us some supplies, including a folding bed that can be placed in the larger tent. Teacher Xue has been very helpful and thoughtful during this period, and we are all very grateful.

I went to the Qunxin Village Committee today to inquire, and it seems that getting electricity will be impossible in the short term. After the recent days of rain, the teachers are showing some fatigue, and some are even showing cold symptoms. Everyone needs a good rest. But overall, morale remains high. When Teacher Xiaowen left that afternoon, the young man was truly reluctant to see her go. He planned to return after his exams. At noon, at our farewell party for Teacher Xiaowen, there was still laughter and joy.
