School events:

Tuesday, another sunny day. Qin Ming, who had returned to Chengdu for a rest, was bringing a new volunteer teacher, Ju Xing, with him, but the morning class would still be split between five teachers. We planned to reverse the previous day’s schedule, with three teachers teaching at Niubi Village School first, and then returning to Qunxin Village School after their classes. The teachers hurriedly finished breakfast and were about to depart when Xiao Yi from the Heart of China arrived to announce that Niubi Village School needed to be reorganized for the next two days. He explained that three teachers from Deyang Jianming Foreign Languages, who had visited the school the day before, were very dissatisfied with its current state, so classes would be suspended for two days. He was also busy organizing the opening of a new tent school in Qunli Village, which was indeed quite demanding.

2. Classes at the Ren’ai School in Qunxin Village continued as normal, with morning reading, military training, music, cultural reading, and English storytelling classes. Ajia tried teaching the older students to sing Li Yu’s “Meiren” during morning reading, and the children were very interested. They plan to consider bringing the middle school students in tomorrow to learn the song. Teacher Lin Yiwei thoroughly reviewed previously learned poems and classical Chinese texts with the younger students and found that the children had excellent memory, retaining most of them. During military training, Instructors Dai and Zhang led the children in formation drills. After several days of training, the children quickly got into shape. Since the ground was dry, they also practiced stepping today. In music class, Teacher Chen Chao had all the children learn his composition, “Sing If You Want,” which was quite engaging. In the cultural reading class, Teacher Lin Yiwei read “Little Flowers on the Barbed Wire” with senior and junior high school students. This picture book, set in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, aroused great interest among the children. The story of Rose Blanche left a deep impression on them. In the English story class, Ajia tried to tell the story of “Green Eggs and Ham” in English to the younger children.
Eggs and
Ham), and found that the children in the lower grades here basically had no experience in learning English (children attending Dongqi School were better), so we mainly played word pronunciation games. Fortunately, the story itself was very interesting and the children listened to it very carefully.

3. For the afternoon interest and reading class, the children had already developed a habit of arriving at the classroom between 1:30 and 2:00 PM, lining up to borrow books, and then reading freely. The previous evening, the teachers had rearranged the seating arrangements, using a mix of desks and cement blocks in both the senior and junior classrooms. This eliminated the need for senior students to “scramble” for seats in the junior classrooms, and prevented the juniors from being left without seats. After everyone settled in, several junior students, particularly interested in performing, asked Ajia to rehearse. Together with some young audience members, they went outside on the cement platform to rehearse two short stories from the comic book “The Story of Afanti,” “Forbidden Food” and “The Archer.” The children were so impressed by the rehearsal that they couldn’t wait to return and perform for everyone. So, we returned to the bamboo forest and stood in the center to perform for everyone. The children performed even better than in rehearsal. Teacher Chen Chao even improvised music for the performance, which was a fantastic result. The “Ren Ai Little Theater” was established in this way. The children were preparing to perform another play tomorrow. I recommended them to perform “The Gruffalo”. Xiao Xian, who performed the most outstandingly, became their director and leading actor.

After school classroom

Today, I arranged a special lesson for Pan Yuli. We found a picture book without a cover. It was filled with Disney stories, and Alice in Wonderland particularly captivated her. The book had large print and pinyin. I read it with her page by page, trying to point and read, asking her to follow along. As long as she recognized three characters on each page, we would move on. She struggled at first, but gradually improved. However, perhaps due to physical reasons or habit, she only made it past five pages. Even so, her progress was significant, and she could already read several sentences relatively completely, which is quite a challenge for her. Compared to younger children, her ability to comprehend the story is slightly better, but her ability to imitate language is much weaker. She struggles to follow along and often has to repeat herself. I think reading to her as often as possible is the only way to overcome this difficulty. Perhaps there is a better way. I invited all the teachers in the school to make time to read to her.

In the afternoon, Xiao Wang, a volunteer from Shanghai, visited the school. He primarily worked on setting up the volunteer information platform. Around 4:00 PM, Qin Ming and Ju Xing arrived together. They had come with a car from a cycling club, which had collected supplies for the disaster area. Everyone was delighted to have Qin Ming back and a new volunteer join the team. Just at noon, some children from the neighborhood brought in a large grass carp, and we welcomed them with a braised fish feast that evening. Qin Ming quickly got into the swing of things upon his return, and he and Instructor Dai went to a fellow villager’s house to help set up a shed. He did a fantastic job.

Two days of sunny weather in a row put everyone in a particularly good mood. The bamboo forest offers a special advantage at this time: it’s cool! In the evening, looking out at the horizon, the sunset glow is a sign of another beautiful day tomorrow!
