  • Sep­tem­ber 26, 1959 — Born:South African illus­tra­tor Piet Grob­ler (1959–) was born in Limpopo Province, South Africa. He is an inter­na­tion­al­ly renowned chil­dren’s pic­ture book illus­tra­tor and author, hav­ing cre­at­ed and illus­trat­ed over 70 chil­dren’s books.[1]Grob­ler has received numer­ous inter­na­tion­al hon­ors for his unique artis­tic style, includ­ing the Gold­en Apple Award at the 2009 Bratisla­va Inter­na­tion­al Illus­tra­tion Bien­nale (BIB).[2]He is also the win­ner of inter­na­tion­al chil­dren’s book awards such as the Peter Pan Award, and has made out­stand­ing con­tri­bu­tions to the field of chil­dren’s book illus­tra­tion in South Africa and even the world. Peter Grob­ler also col­lab­o­rat­ed with Chi­nese edi­tors on a book that was first pub­lished in Chi­na. I was for­tu­nate to be the trans­la­tor of this book: “Lit­tle Sis­ter Nini and the Por­cu­pine Gum­ba”
  • Sep­tem­ber 26, 1947 — Death:Hugh Loft­ing (1886–1947), British-Amer­i­can chil­dren’s author, died in Cal­i­for­nia.[3]Loftin is the cre­ator of the clas­sic chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture char­ac­ter “Doc­tor Dolit­tle”. His works, which tell the adven­tures of a doc­tor who can talk to ani­mals, are loved by gen­er­a­tions of read­ers.[4]His sequel to the series, The Voy­ages of Doc­tor Dolit­tle, pub­lished in 1922, won the New­bery Medal for Chil­dren’s Lit­er­a­ture in the Unit­ed States, estab­lish­ing the Dolit­tle series’ posi­tion in the his­to­ry of chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture.[5]Loftin wrote and pub­lished eight Dolit­tle nov­els dur­ing his life­time, and two more were pub­lished posthu­mous­ly.[6].
  • 1962Year 9Month 26Day of Birth:British writer and illus­tra­tor Mark Had­don (1962–) was born in Northamp­ton, Eng­land[7]Hard­en has writ­ten and illus­trat­ed many works for chil­dren, and has pub­lished more than ten chil­dren’s books. He also worked in the edu­ca­tion of chil­dren with dis­abil­i­ties in his ear­ly years. These expe­ri­ences have enriched his cre­ative per­spec­tive. His most well-known work is the nov­el “The Curi­ous Inci­dent of the Dog in the Night-Time” (orig­i­nal Eng­lish title The Curi­ous Inci­dent of the Dog in the Night-Time), which won sev­er­al awards includ­ing the Whit­bread Prize and the Guardian Chil­dren’s Lit­er­a­ture Award after its pub­li­ca­tion in 2003.[8]Hard­en is known for his sharp humor and unique nar­ra­tive style, and is well-known among both adult and young read­ers.

  • Sep­tem­ber 26, 1774:Amer­i­can pio­neer John Chap­man (1774–1845) is born. Known by his nick­name “John­ny Apple­seed,” he became a folk leg­end in the Unit­ed States, and his lat­er work has found its way into chil­dren’s books through Dis­ney ani­ma­tions and oth­er adap­ta­tions.[9][10].
  • Sep­tem­ber 26, 2005:Helen Cress­well (1934–2005), a British chil­dren’s lit­er­a­ture writer, has passed away. She wrote more than 100 chil­dren’s books, includ­ing The Scare­crow Witch and The Bagth­or­pes series. She was a pro­lif­ic and wide­ly loved chil­dren’s book writer in the UK.[11].
