•50Many years ago, he took over the Gospel House and start­ed pub­lish­ing pic­ture books, found­ing the Friends of Chil­dren. He said, “There is no road ahead of me, but there is a road behind me.”
 

•30Many years ago, he brought Japan­ese pic­ture books to the world, and the Japan­ese pic­ture book writ­ers he col­lab­o­rat­ed with, includ­ing Aka­bane Sue­kichi, Anno Mit­sumasa, and Kako­riko, won the “Inter­na­tion­al Hans Chris­t­ian Ander­sen Award”;
 

•20Many years ago, he came to Chi­na to pro­mote pic­ture books and used his roy­al­ties to estab­lish the “Lit­tle Pine Tree Award.” The win­ners of that year, Cai Gao and Zhou Xiang, have become impor­tant forces in Chi­nese pic­ture books.
