Because she was going to Bei­jing and would meet Sis­ter Li Ling from “Green Child”, Dou Dou said that she want­ed to draw a pic­ture for “Green Child”. When Dou’s moth­er heard this, she was secret­ly delight­ed. This was exact­ly what she want­ed:) What a great gift!
   
Doudou tilt­ed his head and thought: “What should I draw?”
   
Dou Ma quick­ly stepped for­ward to act as a strate­gist: “First, think about what ‘Green Child’ is?”
   
——“It’s a book.”
   
“You’ve read ‘The Green Child’. What’s in that book?”
   
——“There are good sto­ries.”
   
“That’s right! With the Green Child, rur­al chil­dren know more sto­ries, learn more knowl­edge, and are hap­pi­er. So, can you try to draw a Green Child book that makes peo­ple feel hap­py?”

    
Doudou agreed to give it a try, and so, the gift born from my sug­ges­tion looked like this:

Flow­ers and princess­es are the two themes that Wang Doudou feels are the hap­pi­est.
 

   
After I fin­ished the paint­ing, I thought it was pret­ty good. It had both boys and girls, so nice :) But Wang Doudou looked at it from left to right and seemed dis­sat­is­fied. She asked me, “Mom, I don’t want to give this paint­ing away. Can I draw anoth­er one?”

   
Hans, it seems I’ve failed as a mil­i­tary advi­sor. I had no choice but to take anoth­er piece of paper and let her express her­self freely.

   
For the sec­ond pic­ture, Doudou drew it very care­ful­ly and metic­u­lous­ly, and it took her two days to com­plete. After­wards, she solemn­ly asked me to help add text. After lis­ten­ing to her expla­na­tion, it was real­ly eye-open­ing.



Doudou’s expla­na­tion:

   
In my heart, I think the green girl is a beau­ti­ful lit­tle princess with long hair like me. I designed a dress for her with many books paint­ed on it, just like the curly-haired teacher in “The Mag­ic School Bus”. These books include dinosaurs, rab­bits, birds, waves, sharks, and the uni­verse; there are books about how mon­keys become humans; there are books about the New Year, books about rec­og­niz­ing words, books about “Mag­ic School Bus”, books about “When It’s Cloudy, It Some­times Falls Meat­balls”, and books about hand­i­crafts.

   
Green Chil­dren brought these books to the chil­dren in the moun­tain­ous areas. These books all had a bar­code because these books were bought by Sis­ter Li Ling and oth­ers for the chil­dren in the moun­tain­ous areas!
 

   
Wang Doudou’s final expla­na­tion of bar­codes is very pow­er­ful, and I pay my trib­ute to it.

   
I noticed a green block on each book, and I asked what it was. She replied, “It’s a bar­code!” I was sur­prised: “Why do you need a bar­code? The Green Chil­dren books are giv­en to chil­dren in the moun­tains, not sold.”

   
Her answer was resound­ing: “I know it’s for chil­dren in the moun­tain­ous areas, but Sis­ter Li Ling and the oth­ers have to buy the books before giv­ing them to them!”
