[Repost] Put the world on the desk

The creativity of this class is so awesome, I must repost it!Original address:Put the world on the deskauthor:Han and Miao[转载]把世界放在课桌上

Putting the world on a desk was another brainchild of Bird and Bear. One gnawing on a bird’s claw, the other rubbing a bear’s paw, they envisioned creating not only the seven continental plates but also the four oceans and water, creating a three-dimensional world map with both land and sea. They immediately set to work. After a week of experimentation and hard work, Bird and Bear created their vision of “the world on a desk.” This uniquely Han and Miao world map would also feature a true news story: “The Rubber Bath Duck’s Journey Around the World.”

Here’s what happened:

In 1992, a cargo ship carrying a toy factory set out from Guangdong, China, intending to cross the Pacific Ocean to Washington State, USA. However, after traveling 4,000 miles, the ship encountered a severe storm, and a container filled with 29,000 yellow plastic toy ducks fell into the sea and shattered. All the toy ducks floated to the surface, forming a massive “duck fleet,” which has been drifting ever since.

In the first three years, 19,000 ducks completed a 6,800-mile trip through the Pacific Subtropical Gyre—a current that swirls around the edge of the Pacific Ocean, passing Indonesia, Australia, South America, and Hawaii. Another group of about 10,000 ducks were thrown out of the current and drifted north.

When they drifted to the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska, the “Duck Fleet” was frozen in the ice and slowly drifted 2,000 miles toward the North Pole. Then, the “Duck Fleet” began to drift south again, and after drifting 4,000 miles south, it arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada, near the United States. When the ice thawed, the ducks drifted 2,000 miles to the east coast of the United States.

Scientists are studying the drifting routes of these ducks to understand the secrets of ocean currents and the Arctic ice cap.
A “gold rush” of ocean enthusiasts formed the “Duck Chasers” to monitor the progress of the “Duck Fleet.” Whenever the “Duck Fleet” was about to reach a certain coast, they would frantically flock to the beach to grab these famous ducks. Collectors were fetching upwards of £1,000 per duck.

Today, these 10,000 ducks continue to drift south, and after many unexpected twists and turns and hardships, they finally arrive at their original destination. Their total drifting journey is 22,000 miles and it took 14 years.

(Excerpt from newspapers and online news)

Bird Hero was intrigued by this news report, a true story from our own planet: tiny ducks, originally designed for a small bathtub, unexpectedly found themselves in the vast ocean, experiencing untold adventures. Each surviving bath duck, weathered by the sea, covered in seaweed and shells, remained fearless in the face of the storm. We can only imagine their adventures on the sea, and that’s exactly what Bird and Bear hope children will do:

Use your imagination and the clay in your hands to make friends and enemies for the little bath duck, design the drifting story in your mind, and gain a perceptual understanding of the world’s geography in the process.
