The Radish Inspector’s Notes at the Renai School in Qunxin Village (Quanxin Village), Hanwang Town, Mianzhu, Sichuan
Today, four new volunteers began training. Xiao Fengning is a sophomore at Peking University, and Xiao Wen is a freshman at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Together with Xiong Liang, they taught nine classes across three classes at the Renai Bamboo Forest Academy. This is physically demanding work, and Xiong Liang said he was almost exhausted by the third class, his energy waning.
Today was the first day of the Niubi Village temporary primary school, with just two tents, right by the road. Despite the basic facilities, the registration was overwhelming, with parents from neighboring villages also sending their children to the school, but they were not accepted due to concerns about the unsafe journey. The inspector and two other volunteers, Qin Ming and Tie Zhu, arrived early in the morning at the Niubi Village temporary primary school near the road. Seventy or eighty children were already waiting, likely because they had been home for a while and were excited to hear about the school. The Niubi Village primary school was very simple, with only two bare tents, and it was right in the blazing sun. The children’s enthusiasm was unprecedented, but classroom discipline was also severely lacking. As we mentioned earlier, the children were doing whatever they wanted in the classroom: talking, fighting… Ha! Finally, a chance to get together.

However, Qin Ming spoke a few foreign words in the upper grades and stunned the children at once; the inspector was in the lower grades and had no choice but to use his special skill which he usually did not show off — “The Mouse Gets the Bride”. Before he started telling the story, he learned to sing the nursery rhyme of “The Mouse Gets the Bride” with the children, “Little cabbage, the fields are yellow…” After three times, the children could basically sing it loudly together.
The second period was Tiezhu’s geography class for the seniors. By the end of the class, the children had basically memorized the names of all the provinces, cities, and special administrative regions. However, this was Tiezhu’s first time interacting with children, so he was still hesitant to teach the younger ones, hehe…
The distance between the two schools is 20 minutes’ walk. When I returned to the bamboo forest at noon, the children on this side had not yet left. Because it is relatively cooler on the bamboo forest side, the children are happy to stay in such a school. It feels a bit like summer camp.
