Ruins and Memory
School events:
Today is Monday, and we woke up to a bright sunny day. Everyone was thrilled by the long-awaited sunshine, and even the birds in the woods chirped cheerfully. After breakfast, the teachers hung out their long-awaited clothes and bedding, and then began another busy day. Today, there are five people at Qunxin Village School, and it’s a bit of a stretch to teach both classes simultaneously. So, the schedule has been slightly adjusted: a music class will be held in the middle of the period at Qunxin Village School, led by Teacher Chen Chao. The Niubizi Village School class will be roughly divided into two halves, with the second half being military training led by Instructor Lao Wei. This allows the teachers who taught at Niubizi Village School during the first half to return to Qunxin Village for the third period.
2. When teachers Ajia and Lin Yiwei arrived at the Niubi Village school, they found Xiaoyi and three new volunteers from the Provincial Youth League Committee already there organizing the students. One of the teachers, Zhang Zheng, who had taught high school biology, was still able to teach, but the other two, Chen and Qu, seemed inexperienced. Zhang Zheng and Xiaoyi were out on a liaison trip and were unavailable for today. We made a slight adjustment to the schedule, allocating one class period for Chen to give a trial lesson. However, it seemed Chen was still inexperienced and had trouble maintaining classroom order; further observation was needed. Conditions in Niubi Village were still quite rudimentary. The children brought their own benches to sit on in the mud, which soaked when it rained and became too hot when the sun was out. Over time, the children’s patience was becoming increasingly strained.
3. Xiao Yi from Heart of China is working hard to open another tent school in Qunli Village and has been contacting various parties over the past two days. Three new volunteers and another person, Lao Yang, are primarily assisting him in managing the Niubi Village school and establishing the new tent school. Yesterday, they had agreed to temporarily share meals at the Qunxin Village school, but today it seems that this has been resolved on its own.
4. This afternoon, while washing dishes, I brought 31 yuan to give to the fellow villager who lent us cement bricks. I’d told them yesterday that each brick would cost 50 cents, and we had exactly 62 bricks. But the old man and his family refused to accept the money, saying that the teachers often help their family and are hardworking volunteers. Asking for more money would be “exploitation,” and we live in socialism. We were deeply moved and promised to return the 62 bricks intact when the school evacuates. After dinner, we rearranged the bricks, desks, and chairs in the upper and lower grades classrooms to create a roughly even distribution between the classes, allowing for more students to stay longer.
5. The afternoon interest and reading class continued as usual, and the children who were drawn to it became increasingly engrossed in the joy of reading. The younger children looked forward to storytime, especially since it was followed by a wonderful musical activity. Today, I paid special attention to Pan Yuli (a few days ago, I mistakenly wrote her Huang Yuli; she takes her mother’s surname) who suffers from congenital heart disease. She truly yearns for reading. Although she rarely speaks a word, she pulls me in whenever she can, and when I’m too busy, I ask a child with better reading skills to read to her. Seeing her eagerness—a desire to absorb nourishment from the words—I felt I should do something for her.

Afternoon in the School
6. After school this afternoon, Ajia, Lin Yiwei, Teacher Chen Chao, and Instructor Dai walked some village children home. They were so excited, they kept us playing along the way. At every house we stopped by, they insisted on inviting us in for a chat and giving us treats. Today, we met some parents and briefly chatted with them about their children’s lives. We also occasionally encountered children who hadn’t been to school for the past couple of days, and we stopped by their homes to encourage their parents to send their children to school. The parents were all very enthusiastic. The journey took a full two hours, and it was a joyful experience. Shortly after we returned to the school and sat down, some of the children we had just walked home arrived, carrying bags of fruits and vegetables. They said their families had sent them, and they urged us to accept them. We accepted them, deeply grateful and touched.

What they lack the least is happiness!
7. In the evening, three teachers from Deyang Jianming Foreign Language School came to see us, asking what supplies we needed and what kind of help they could offer us. We exchanged contact information. Shortly after we saw them off, several teachers from the Ren Ai Foundation, including Wang Wei and Wang Lu, also came to visit us, bringing us two much-needed tents. It was a real relief.
After a busy day, it’s finally time to rest. The last few days have been rainy, making life difficult, and everyone often hasn’t been able to finish their work and go to bed until after midnight. Today is a beautiful sunny day, and several teachers have finally found dry air for the first time since arriving here, and ended up going to bed before 10 pm. Time to rest up. What a wonderful day!
