This is a fable about growth and upbring\u00ading, and also a poem about \u201chome\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, the birdsFeit\u00adian<\/strong>Home is a nest made of \u201cfine mate\u00adri\u00adals,\u201d woven from branch\u00ades brought by his par\u00adents, a place of shel\u00adter, pro\u00adtec\u00adtion, and gen\u00adtle sup\u00adport. But in the end, Fei Tian\u2019s true home is no longer among the inter\u00adtwined branch\u00ades, but in the vast sky. The sky\u2014vast, uncer\u00adtain, yet des\u00adtined to belong to him. \u201cYou are a bird\u201d is like a call, and its inner echo is: you are des\u00adtined to fly, des\u00adtined to make the sky your home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The illus\u00adtra\u00adtor uses rhyth\u00admic com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions and fresh, dynam\u00adic brush\u00adstrokes to elo\u00adquent\u00adly tell this fable through a series of images. The main char\u00adac\u00adter, com\u00adposed of blue, white, and red, is clean, sharp, and instant\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adniz\u00adable. The flex\u00adi\u00adble use of mixed media, includ\u00ading water\u00adcol\u00ador and ink, imbues the paint\u00ading with a sense of trans\u00adparen\u00adcy and lay\u00ader\u00ading, cre\u00adat\u00ading a dream\u00adlike expe\u00adri\u00adence. The bird\u2019s feath\u00aders resem\u00adble flames, and the lines of its nest resem\u00adble rip\u00adples, cre\u00adat\u00ading a sense of move\u00adment with\u00adin still\u00adness and emo\u00adtion with\u00adin move\u00adment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lit\u00adtle bird, Feit\u00adian, remains in its nest, hes\u00adi\u00adtant to take that first step. While its fel\u00adlow birds are hap\u00adpi\u00adly soar\u00ading, it remains nes\u00adtled. The \u201cnest\u201d here isn\u2019t just a phys\u00adi\u00adcal nest; it rep\u00adre\u00adsents a spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal bound\u00adary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of the par\u00adents lies at the emo\u00adtion\u00adal core of the book. They begin to tear down the house\u2014pulling one branch each day, start\u00ading from the edge, bit by bit, loos\u00aden\u00ading the sense of secu\u00adri\u00adty. While this action may seem cru\u00adel at first glance, their tone remains ten\u00adder. The feel\u00ading of \u201creluc\u00adtant to let go, yet still hav\u00ading to\u201d flows like water in their eyes and ges\u00adtures. The moth\u00ader does\u00adn\u2019t try to stop the father; she watch\u00ades and under\u00adstands, until she her\u00adself removes the last branch. Let\u00adting go is some\u00adtimes a sign of deep\u00ader love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final\u00adly tak\u00ading flight, Fei Tian ini\u00adtial\u00adly resem\u00adbles \u201ca kite with a bro\u00adken string,\u201d per\u00adhaps the most apt metaphor for that moment. It\u2019s a shaky, unsta\u00adble ges\u00adture, yet one final\u00adly freed from its con\u00adstraints. From falling to soar\u00ading, Fei Tian\u2019s take\u00adoff isn\u2019t a momen\u00adtary spec\u00adta\u00adcle, but rather a jour\u00adney of inner awak\u00aden\u00ading. The emo\u00adtion\u00adal cli\u00admax of this moment is clev\u00ader\u00adly cap\u00adtured through a shift in the com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion\u2019s rhythm: from hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal to ver\u00adti\u00adcal, and from hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal\u00adly flow\u00ading visu\u00adal lines to ver\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly ascend\u00ading ones, this dra\u00admat\u00adic rever\u00adsal from falling to ascend\u00ading allows ample room for expres\u00adsion, set\u00adting the stage for a cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of \u201csoar\u00ading into the sky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paint\u00ading with the most white space seems the most wor\u00adthy of scruti\u00adny: The entire page is dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded by a sin\u00adgle bird, soar\u00ading from the very cen\u00adter of the bot\u00adtom, ready to flap its wings upwards, like a solo dancer under a spot\u00adlight. The empti\u00adness of the space, in turn, imbues it with emo\u00adtion\u00adal full\u00adness. This is not only the bird\u2019s first flight, but also its farewell to its old \u201chome\u201d and its con\u00adnec\u00adtion to its new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design of the front and back loops is also worth men\u00adtion\u00ading. The front loop fea\u00adtures a pale sil\u00adhou\u00adette of a fly\u00ading bird, sym\u00adbol\u00adiz\u00ading poten\u00adtial and dreams yet to be embarked on. The back loop, how\u00adev\u00ader, trans\u00adforms to a dark green back\u00adground, where the same sil\u00adhou\u00adette becomes a clear, danc\u00ading bird, imbued with the ener\u00adgy of life and free\u00addom. This shift echoes Fei Tian\u2019s evo\u00adlu\u00adtion: no longer sim\u00adply a \u201cfly\u00ading bird,\u201d it becomes a tru\u00adly free-spir\u00adit\u00aded being who calls the sky her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good pic\u00adture book is often an ele\u00adgant and har\u00admo\u00adnious ensem\u00adble of text and images. Cao Wenx\u00adu\u00adan\u2019s text and Tian Dong\u00adming\u2019s illus\u00adtra\u00adtions offer a bril\u00adliant exam\u00adple of this sym\u00adpho\u00adny. The depth of mean\u00ading and the blank spaces left in the text and images also leave room for rich inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion. This book is a gift for all chil\u00addren hes\u00adi\u00adtant about grow\u00ading up, and for every par\u00adent who will even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly let go. Its gen\u00adtle yet firm reminder: \u201cYou are a bird\u201d is not only a con\u00adfir\u00adma\u00adtion of iden\u00adti\u00adty, but also an awak\u00aden\u00ading of destiny\u2014a life des\u00adtined to fly, its true home lies not in a pro\u00adtect\u00aded nest, but in the sky where it dares to spread its wings and soar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because home not only pro\u00advides a safe haven, but also serves as a start\u00ading point for chil\u00addren to have the strength to trav\u00adel far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
