Lion\u00adni is con\u00adsid\u00adered one of the most influ\u00aden\u00adtial pic\u00adture book artists of the 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, known for his mod\u00adernist col\u00adlage aes\u00adthet\u00adic and philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal, alle\u00adgor\u00adi\u00adcal chil\u00addren\u2019s pic\u00adture books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfa8 The origins of avant-garde art and collage aesthetics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lion\u00adni was edu\u00adcat\u00aded in Italy and received his doc\u00adtor\u00adate in eco\u00adnom\u00adics from the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Genoa in 1935. After mov\u00ading to the Unit\u00aded States, he worked for For\u00adtune.<em>For\u00adtune<\/em>) mag\u00ada\u00adzine art direc\u00adtor. Influ\u00adenced by Futur\u00adism and the Bauhaus move\u00adment, he intro\u00adduced col\u00adlage art into chil\u00addren\u2019s pic\u00adture books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His first book, Lit\u00adtle Blue and Lit\u00adtle Yel\u00adlow (<em>Lit\u00adtle Blue and Lit\u00adtle Yel\u00adlow<\/em>(1959) orig\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded from an impromp\u00adtu paper-cut sto\u00adry he cre\u00adat\u00aded to enter\u00adtain his grand\u00adchil\u00addren on a train. This book, which uses col\u00ador and form instead of char\u00adac\u00adters, pio\u00adneered the \u201cabstract nar\u00adra\u00adtive pic\u00adture book.\u201d Lion\u00adni advo\u00adcat\u00aded that chil\u00addren\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture should \u201cevoke won\u00adder rather than preach\u201d and opposed the reduc\u00adtion of pic\u00adture books to edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u00adal tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc2d\ud83d\udc1f A social allegory of tiny lives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lit\u00adtle Black Fish<em>Swim\u00admy<\/em>, 1963)<\/strong> \u2014 It tells the sto\u00adry of a brave black fish who unites with his friends to resist nat\u00adur\u00adal ene\u00admies.
