It stemmed from a vis\u00adit to his son Ingo\u2019s art school in Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia. There, he and his son sat side by side, cre\u00adat\u00ading art\u00adwork togeth\u00ader. He had meth\u00adods to teach him, and he, in turn, had tech\u00adniques to share with him. At the time, he could\u00adn\u2019t help but reflect on this father-son rela\u00adtion\u00adship, real\u00adiz\u00ading that there were things his son knew that he did\u00adn\u2019t, and things he knew that his son did\u00adn\u2019t. This shared learn\u00ading process was always a process of mutu\u00adal exchange. Rasi\u00adca felt this rela\u00adtion\u00adship was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly worth cel\u00ade\u00adbrat\u00ading, so he returned and cre\u00adat\u00aded the book, Shoul\u00adder to Shoul\u00adder.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b\u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n As a father of a daugh\u00adter, I\u2019ve had sim\u00adi\u00adlar insights myself. Back in May 2004, I gave a lec\u00adture at the Nation\u00adal Library titled \u201cPic\u00adture Books and Par\u00adent-Child Read\u00ading.\u201d One of the top\u00adics was \u201cPic\u00adture Books: Chil\u00addren as Adults\u2019 Teach\u00aders.\u201d My daugh\u00adter was less than five years old at the time, and I\u2019d been exposed to pic\u00adture books for less than three years. But much of my under\u00adstand\u00ading of pic\u00adture books back then ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u00aded from my daugh\u00adter\u2019s help, espe\u00adcial\u00adly regard\u00ading visu\u00adal nar\u00adra\u00adtives and the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between text and images. She pro\u00advid\u00aded me with many insights. There\u00adfore, I sug\u00adgest\u00aded at the time that if adults want to gain a deep\u00ader under\u00adstand\u00ading of pic\u00adture books, they should read more with their chil\u00addren, \u201csee\u00ading pic\u00adture books through a child\u2019s eyes.\u201d Indeed, I still hold this view to this day.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal Chi\u00adnese fam\u00adi\u00adly rela\u00adtion\u00adships and roles, fathers are often assigned the role of pro\u00adtect\u00ading and guid\u00ading their chil\u00addren. Peo\u00adple often use the expres\u00adsion \u201cfather\u00adly love is like a moun\u00adtain\u201d to empha\u00adsize its depth and grandeur. But think care\u00adful\u00adly, isn\u2019t this a suf\u00adfi\u00adcient reflec\u00adtion of the father-child rela\u00adtion\u00adship? What about the aspect of equal inter\u00adac\u00adtion, mutu\u00adal learn\u00ading, and shared growth? What about the humor\u00adous, play\u00adful side? Why not \u201cfather\u00adly love is like water,\u201d encour\u00adag\u00ading, nour\u00adish\u00ading, and adapt\u00ading? Why not \u201cfather\u00adly love is like light\u201d or \u201cfather\u00adly love is like wind,\u201d empha\u00adsiz\u00ading the aspect of illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00ading, blow\u00ading, and push\u00ading? Why not \u201cfather\u00adly love is like a song,\u201d metaphor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly refer\u00adring to the aspect that brings joy and encour\u00adage\u00adment, and may even inspire artis\u00adtic inspi\u00adra\u00adtion? In mod\u00adern soci\u00adety, the role of the father is quite diverse. Every father may have his or her own unique char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics, allow\u00ading him or her to bring out his or her best strengths in the par\u00adent-child rela\u00adtion\u00adship.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n In \u201cShoul\u00adder to Shoul\u00adder,\u201d we see such diverse father\u00adly love. In fact, we also see father\u00adly love in mul\u00adti\u00adple cul\u00adtures and back\u00adgrounds. Those heart\u00adwarm\u00ading pic\u00adtures tran\u00adscend cul\u00adtur\u00adal bound\u00adaries, show\u00ading fathers and chil\u00addren of all col\u00adors and nation\u00adal\u00adi\u00adties, high\u00adlight\u00ading the uni\u00adver\u00adsal\u00adi\u00adty and diverse beau\u00adty of fam\u00adi\u00adly love. In those fathers who lis\u00adten to, under\u00adstand, and adapt to their chil\u00addren\u2019s needs, we see \u201cfather\u00adly love like water\u201d; in those fathers who exchange the roles of teach\u00ading and learn\u00ading with their chil\u00addren, and play the roles of \u201cdream\u00ader\u201d and \u201cdoer,\u201d we see \u201cfather\u00adly love like light\u201d; in those fathers who play games with their chil\u00addren and encour\u00adage them to climb and explore, we should also see \u201cfather\u00adly love like a song\u201d\u2026 There\u00adfore, such a pic\u00adture book can indeed be said to be a \u201ccel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of father\u00adly love,\u201d and it is a cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion full of chil\u00addren\u2019s fun and artis\u00adtic inter\u00adest. \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b\u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n I can\u2019t help but want to dis\u00adcuss a few more details about artist Chris Lasi\u00adca, born in 1959. I met him close\u00adly in 2015 at the USBBY (US IBBY) con\u00adfer\u00adence. He\u2019s a rather low-key artist. That year, he had already been nom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded for the Hans Chris\u00adt\u00adian Ander\u00adsen Award by the Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal Board on Books for Young Peo\u00adple (USA) for the sec\u00adond time, yet he remained remark\u00adably hum\u00adble in his dis\u00adcus\u00adsions and dis\u00adcus\u00adsions. He pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly paints in water\u00adcol\u00ador, but his style has a strong influ\u00adence on Chi\u00adnese ink paint\u00ading. He also enjoys clas\u00adsi\u00adcal Chi\u00adnese paint\u00adings and has a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar fond\u00adness for Chi\u00adnese brush cal\u00adlig\u00adra\u00adphy, but he does\u00adn\u2019t delib\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly imi\u00adtate Chi\u00adnese paint\u00ading tech\u00adniques. He\u2019s most drawn to the imme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adcy of paint\u00ading, the seem\u00ading\u00adly uncer\u00adtain yet expres\u00adsive tech\u00adnique that reveals the artist\u2019s emo\u00adtions and per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty in a fleet\u00ading stroke. He describes his great\u00adest admi\u00adra\u00adtion as the \u201ctime\u00adless imme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adcy\u201d of the brush\u00adstrokes in ancient Chi\u00adnese paint\u00ading and cal\u00adlig\u00adra\u00adphy.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b\u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u200b<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n To appre\u00adci\u00adate Lasi\u00adca\u2019s illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, it\u2019s impor\u00adtant to under\u00adstand his oth\u00ader iden\u00adti\u00adty: a skilled vio\u00adlin\u00adist. He\u2019s been pas\u00adsion\u00adate about paint\u00ading and music since child\u00adhood, devel\u00adop\u00ading and refin\u00ading his hob\u00adbies. He majored in biol\u00ado\u00adgy in col\u00adlege and, after some expe\u00adri\u00adence in the real world, was admit\u00adted to med\u00adical school. When\u00adev\u00ader he had the chance, he explored the pow\u00ader of music through paint\u00ading and pic\u00adture books. For exam\u00adple, he cre\u00adat\u00aded sev\u00ader\u00adal pic\u00adture books for chil\u00addren that explore jazz music and the lives of jazz mas\u00adters. I sus\u00adpect that for him, jazz, like tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal Chi\u00adnese paint\u00ading and cal\u00adlig\u00adra\u00adphy, holds a cer\u00adtain kind of imme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adcy.
