A few years after the sci-fi block\u00adbuster \u201cThe Imper\u00adfect Mobi\u00adliza\u00adtion,\u201d cre\u00adat\u00aded by the Fan broth\u00aders, gar\u00adnered numer\u00adous pres\u00adti\u00adgious inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal awards, we\u2019ve received a some\u00adwhat unex\u00adpect\u00aded sequel, \u201cBarn\u00ada\u00adby: A Per\u00adfect Pet.\u201d Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, I was a bit appre\u00adhen\u00adsive, as \u201cThe Imper\u00adfect Mobi\u00adliza\u00adtion\u201d seemed to per\u00adfect\u00adly cap\u00adture the themes of \u201cper\u00adfec\u00adtion\u201d and \u201caccep\u00adtance.\u201d Would forc\u00ading a sequel be a poor imi\u00adta\u00adtion? Read\u00ading it, I was final\u00adly reas\u00adsured. It turns out this is an equal\u00adly fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading par\u00adal\u00adlel saga, more a com\u00adpan\u00adion piece to the orig\u00adi\u00adnal than a sequel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eng\u00adlish ver\u00adsion of \u201cImper\u00adfect Mobi\u00adliza\u00adtion\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The orig\u00adi\u00adnal work itself is a mas\u00adsive sto\u00adry, far exceed\u00ading the scope of a typ\u00adi\u00adcal pic\u00adture book, but the Fan broth\u00aders had much mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal they did\u00adn\u2019t have time to present in that book. The orig\u00adi\u00adnal Eng\u00adlish title, \u201cBarnabus Project,\u201d lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly trans\u00adlates as \u201cBarnabus Project,\u201d tells the sto\u00adry from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of imper\u00adfect pets labeled \u201cfailed projects,\u201d depict\u00ading their dreams and strug\u00adgle for free\u00addom. The sto\u00adry\u2019s tri\u00adumphant escape of self-awak\u00aden\u00ading is thrilling, but that cli\u00admax can eas\u00adi\u00adly lead read\u00aders to believe the cre\u00adators favored \u201cimper\u00adfec\u00adtion.\u201d In real\u00adi\u00adty, the Fan broth\u00aders weren\u2019t so absolute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two details in the orig\u00adi\u00adnal paint\u00ading are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly note\u00adwor\u00adthy. One is when Barn\u00adabas is about to escape the Per\u00adfect Pet Shop, he invol\u00adun\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adly stops and earnest\u00adly admires Barn\u00ada\u00adby, the \u201csuc\u00adcess\u00adful project.\u201d To Barn\u00adabas, Barn\u00ada\u00adby, with his larg\u00ader eyes and \u201cfur as fluffy as cot\u00adton can\u00addy,\u201d is tru\u00adly per\u00adfect. The com\u00adpan\u00adion book, \u201cBarn\u00ada\u00adby the Per\u00adfect Pet,\u201d was essen\u00adtial\u00adly cre\u00adat\u00aded using this paint\u00ading as its start\u00ading point. The Fan broth\u00aders recre\u00adate the scene at a sim\u00adi\u00adlar point in their new book, using a near\u00adly iden\u00adti\u00adcal image. It still incor\u00adpo\u00adrates all the ele\u00adments of the orig\u00adi\u00adnal paint\u00ading, but the nar\u00adra\u00adtive shifts to the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of the lit\u00adtle girl and Barn\u00ada\u00adby: \u201cOn a sun\u00adny, warm day, they can once again go for a walk in the park togeth\u00ader.\u201d The text and images still seam\u00adless\u00adly inte\u00adgrate! I say \u201calmost the same image\u201d because, upon clos\u00ader inspec\u00adtion, you can actu\u00adal\u00adly see some sub\u00adtle dif\u00adfer\u00adences. The Fan broth\u00aders\u2019 father, Mr. Fan Guang\u00addi (the elder\u00adly man in the bowler hat in the pic\u00adture), was a life\u00adlong philoso\u00adpher and a renowned Amer\u00adi\u00adcan schol\u00adar of Wittgen\u00adstein\u2019s phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy. He also metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly stud\u00adied and trans\u00adlat\u00aded Lao Tzu\u2019s \u201cTao Te Ching.\u201d The three broth\u00aders were like\u00adly influ\u00adenced by Mr. Fan to some extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my opin\u00adion, \u201cBarn\u00ada\u00adby the Per\u00adfect Pet\u201d con\u00adtin\u00adues the pre\u00advi\u00adous film\u2019s explo\u00adration of themes of \u201cper\u00adfec\u00adtion\u201d and \u201caccep\u00adtance,\u201d but it also focus\u00ades on recon\u00adstruct\u00ading and decon\u00adstruct\u00ading the con\u00adcept of \u201cper\u00adfec\u00adtion.\u201d In the sto\u00adry, Barn\u00ada\u00adby is both per\u00adfect and imper\u00adfect. Com\u00adpared to \u201cfailed project\u201d Barn\u00ada\u00adby, Barn\u00ada\u00adby can be con\u00adsid\u00adered per\u00adfect at a cer\u00adtain stage and accord\u00ading to cer\u00adtain stan\u00addards; but com\u00adpared to the new prod\u00aduct, Rain\u00adbow Barn\u00ada\u00adby, he becomes imper\u00adfect. These are rel\u00ada\u00adtive con\u00adcepts, mutu\u00adal\u00adly rein\u00adforc\u00ading and mutu\u00adal\u00adly exclu\u00adsive. Only when peo\u00adple let go of their obses\u00adsion with per\u00adfec\u00adtion or imper\u00adfec\u00adtion can they achieve true per\u00adfec\u00adtion deep with\u00adin their hearts.
