This was thanks to Lioni. In 1952, when 23-year-old Carl fled Ger\u00admany to New York with only $40 in his pock\u00adet, he met Lioni. Some\u00adhow, this impul\u00adsive young man impressed the design giant. Lioni was born in the Nether\u00adlands and spent his teenage years in Italy. Because of his Jew\u00adish ances\u00adtry and his wife\u2019s sta\u00adtus as the daugh\u00adter of a founder of the Ital\u00adian Com\u00admu\u00adnist Par\u00adty, he was forced to immi\u00adgrate to the Unit\u00aded States dur\u00ading World War II. Karl was born in the Unit\u00aded States, but his par\u00adents were Ger\u00adman. When he was six, his fam\u00adi\u00adly returned to Ger\u00admany. Lat\u00ader, his father was draft\u00aded into the Sovi\u00adet army and trag\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly spent eight years as a pris\u00adon\u00ader of war, and as a teenag\u00ader, he was forced to dig trench\u00ades. Lion\u00adi\u2019s first book, Lit\u00adtle Blue and Lit\u00adtle Yel\u00adlow, was col\u00adlaged, as was Car\u00adr\u2019s first book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Are You Look\u00ading At? How\u00adev\u00ader, Carr employed this tech\u00adnique more thor\u00adough\u00adly, incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00ading it into near\u00adly all of his pic\u00adture books. He even wrote tuto\u00adri\u00adals and illus\u00adtrat\u00aded them to teach read\u00aders how to cre\u00adate their own col\u00adlages. He said he had seen an adver\u00adtise\u00adment designed by Carl and was cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded by the red lob\u00adster in it. He thought it was exact\u00adly the illus\u00adtra\u00adtion style he need\u00aded. In his mem\u00ado\u00adry, his kinder\u00adgarten days were a par\u00adadise. He missed his kinder\u00adgarten teacher most. Although he could\u00adn\u2019t remem\u00adber her name or what she looked like, he remem\u00adbered how she great\u00adly admired his draw\u00ading tal\u00adent and even called home to tell his par\u00adents, \u201cThis child is incred\u00adi\u00adbly tal\u00adent\u00aded. Please encour\u00adage him in this area.\u201d Com\u00adpared to adver\u00adtis\u00ading design, which he had grown some\u00adwhat tired of, cre\u00adat\u00ading pic\u00adture books felt like a tru\u00adly free\u00ading expe\u00adri\u00adence. It tells the sto\u00adry of a tiny, hun\u00adgry new\u00adborn cater\u00adpil\u00adlar who eats an apple on Mon\u00adday, two pears on Tues\u00adday, and three plums on Wednes\u00adday. As he con\u00adtin\u00adues his jour\u00adney, he trans\u00adforms into a plump cater\u00adpil\u00adlar, a chrysalis, and, a few weeks lat\u00ader, a beau\u00adti\u00adful but\u00adter\u00adfly. The sto\u00adry is sim\u00adple, but the stun\u00adning illus\u00adtra\u00adtions make it a visu\u00adal feast. The high\u00adlight is the string of tiny holes through\u00adout the book, rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00ading the cater\u00adpil\u00adlar\u2019s path. For years, near\u00adly every child has been unable to resist explor\u00ading it with their fin\u00adgers.
