In the 1840s, when the British lit\u00ader\u00adary giant Charles Dick\u00adens first vis\u00adit\u00aded the Unit\u00aded States, he was shocked by the ram\u00adpant and bla\u00adtant pirat\u00ading of his own works. Inspired by this, he wrote a pam\u00adphlet specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly mock\u00ading and crit\u00adi\u00adciz\u00ading this phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon. Dur\u00ading his trav\u00adels, pirat\u00aded copies of this pam\u00adphlet were read\u00adi\u00adly avail\u00adable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 4)\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706820_2.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u56db\uff09\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Cov\u00ader of a 1904 Amer\u00adi\u00adcan pirat\u00aded edi\u00adtion of Peter Rab\u00adbit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In 1904, pirat\u00aded copies of The Tale of Peter Rab\u00adbit also appeared in the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan mar\u00adket, caus\u00ading con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable headaches for Miss Porter and the Vaugh\u00adan Com\u00adpa\u00adny. In that era, in that pub\u00adlish\u00ading envi\u00adron\u00adment, the Unit\u00aded States could not have its own pic\u00adture book mas\u00adters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ear\u00adli\u00adest mas\u00adter\u00adpiece of a pic\u00adture book in the Unit\u00aded States is undoubt\u00aded\u00adly Wan\u00adda Gag\u2019s (1893\u20131946) A Mil\u00adlion Cats (1928), which won the New\u00adbery Medal Sil\u00adver Medal from the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Library Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion in 1929. Today, the New\u00adbery Medal pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnizes chil\u00addren\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, but the Calde\u00adcott Medal, specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly for pic\u00adture books and illus\u00adtra\u00adtors, was not estab\u00adlished until 1939. The estab\u00adlish\u00adment of such an award by the Nation\u00adal Library Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion is cru\u00adcial, not only pro\u00advid\u00ading spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal encour\u00adage\u00adment to the work and its cre\u00adators but also pro\u00advid\u00ading sub\u00adstan\u00adtial sup\u00adport for the work\u2019s cir\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adtion and the cre\u00adator\u2019s liveli\u00adhood. The book tells the sto\u00adry of a boy who, blow\u00ading a horn, takes a walk through the for\u00adest. He awak\u00adens a lion, sum\u00admons a baby ele\u00adphant and a giant bear, as well as kan\u00adga\u00adroos, cranes, mon\u00adkeys, rab\u00adbits, and oth\u00ader ani\u00admals. They parade, pic\u00adnic, and play games\u2026 until the boy\u2019s father arrives to pick him up, and the for\u00adest returns to a pro\u00adfound tran\u00adquil\u00adi\u00adty. The sto\u00adry sounds live\u00adly at first, but the images are those strik\u00ading black-and-white prints. The nar\u00adra\u00adtive is told in a gen\u00adtle rhythm, sim\u00adple yet repet\u00adi\u00adtive, lin\u00adger\u00ading, and lin\u00adger\u00ading man\u00adner, cre\u00adat\u00ading a unique\u00adly tran\u00adquil and slight\u00adly mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous atmos\u00adphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 4)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/default-16.gif\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u56db\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>Inside page of the Eng\u00adlish edi\u00adtion of \u201cIn the For\u00adest\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Ho Ace was near\u00adly fifty when she wrote this sto\u00adry. She was at home in the woods out\u00adside Chica\u00adgo, accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading her beloved hus\u00adband, who was ter\u00admi\u00adnal\u00adly ill and near\u00ading death. As she qui\u00adet\u00adly await\u00aded death, she felt sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly no fear, instead con\u00adjur\u00ading up images of for\u00adest ani\u00admals and chil\u00addren. These mem\u00ado\u00adries were also from her child\u00adhood, as she was born in a small town in Wis\u00adcon\u00adsin, nes\u00adtled between a lake and a for\u00adest. As a child, she loved to escape into the dark woods and sit for hours, lis\u00adten\u00ading to the wind through the trees and wait\u00ading for the ani\u00admals to appear. It was in this state of mind that she picked up her brush and began paint\u00ading \u201cIn the Woods.\u201d After her hus\u00adband\u2019s death, she left the for\u00adest and nev\u00ader returned. How\u00adev\u00ader, the sto\u00adry has two sequels: \u201cThe For\u00adest Con\u00adfer\u00adence\u201d and \u201cThat\u2019s Me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the For\u00adest\u201d holds an inde\u00adscrib\u00adable mag\u00adic that lingers in peo\u00adple\u2019s minds. Japan\u00adese pub\u00adlish\u00ader Nao Mat\u00adsui con\u00adfi\u00addent\u00adly declared it his favorite pic\u00adture book of all time. Chil\u00addren have their own rea\u00adsons for lik\u00ading it, for exam\u00adple, enjoy\u00ading imi\u00adtat\u00ading the sto\u00adry in the book by act\u00ading it out, as it\u2019s a play inspired by a boy\u2019s imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. Lat\u00ader, a musi\u00adcian adapt\u00aded it into a chil\u00addren\u2019s musi\u00adcal, using a sim\u00adi\u00adlar tech\u00adnique to \u201cPeter and the Wolf,\u201d imi\u00adtat\u00ading the ani\u00admals to dif\u00adfer\u00adent tunes. It\u2019s tru\u00adly enter\u00adtain\u00ading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\u00adev\u00ader, Mary her\u00adself firm\u00adly believes that her great\u00adest con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to Amer\u00adi\u00adcan chil\u00addren\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture is \u201cA Sto\u00adry of a Baby,\u201d pub\u00adlished in 1939. This pic\u00adture book, which remark\u00adably accu\u00adrate\u00adly depicts the process from fer\u00adtil\u00adized egg to new\u00adborn, is con\u00adsid\u00adered one of the ear\u00adli\u00adest chil\u00addren\u2019s sex edu\u00adca\u00adtion books. Her hus\u00adband, Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Harold Ace, a med\u00adical expert, pro\u00advid\u00aded her with con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable assis\u00adtance in writ\u00ading the book.
