Today, this book is lit\u00adtle more than an illus\u00adtrat\u00aded chil\u00addren\u2019s ency\u00adclo\u00adpe\u00addia, at most a pro\u00adto\u00adtype of a pic\u00adture book, but at the time, it was of great sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance. Come\u00adnius con\u00adceived of this chil\u00addren\u2019s text\u00adbook years before com\u00adpil\u00ading it. He believed that chil\u00addren need\u00aded spe\u00adcial read\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals, and that com\u00adbin\u00ading pic\u00adtures and text could achieve remark\u00adable results, both enter\u00adtain\u00ading chil\u00addren and mak\u00ading teach\u00ading more effec\u00adtive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 2)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706769_3.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u4e8c\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>\nWorld Atlas<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 2)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706769_4.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u4e8c\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>\nInside page of World Atlas<\/p>\n<p>As a 17th-cen\u00adtu\u00adry schol\u00adar, Come\u00adnius under\u00adstood that chil\u00addren find plea\u00adsure in pic\u00adtures. He also devel\u00adoped illus\u00adtrat\u00aded text\u00adbooks and ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded him\u00adself to reform\u00ading chil\u00addren\u2019s edu\u00adca\u00adtion, focus\u00ading on respect\u00ading chil\u00addren\u2019s per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty and lib\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading them. This was quite avant-garde at the time. The World Map had a last\u00ading influ\u00adence. Orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly pub\u00adlished in Latin and Ger\u00adman, it was trans\u00adlat\u00aded into numer\u00adous lan\u00adguages and was still being reprint\u00aded until at least 1780. Come\u00adnius is also revered as the founder of ped\u00ada\u00adgogy.<\/p>\n<p>In 1789, the Eng\u00adlish poet and print\u00admak\u00ader William Blake (1757\u20131827) cre\u00adat\u00aded a beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly col\u00adored illus\u00adtrat\u00aded col\u00adlec\u00adtion of poet\u00adry for chil\u00addren, Songs of Inno\u00adcence. How\u00adev\u00ader, the col\u00adors in the book were hand-paint\u00aded, not machine-print\u00aded! In the first half of the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, col\u00ador print\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly devel\u00adoped, and pub\u00adlish\u00aders and illus\u00adtra\u00adtors began to explore how to use col\u00ador to lure chil\u00addren into the world of books.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 2)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706769_5.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u4e8c\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>\nBlake\u2019s \u201cSongs of Inno\u00adcence and Expe\u00adri\u00adence\u201d cov\u00ader<\/p>\n<p>In the open\u00ading chap\u00adter of Alice\u2019s Adven\u00adtures in Won\u00adder\u00adland, pub\u00adlished in 1865, there\u2019s a clas\u00adsic line: Alice laments the book her sis\u00adter is read\u00ading: \u201cWhat good is a book with\u00adout pic\u00adtures and con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion?\u201d This line could almost be con\u00adsid\u00adered a man\u00adi\u00adfesto for mod\u00adern chil\u00addren\u2019s books. It at least sug\u00adgests that by the sec\u00adond half of 19th-cen\u00adtu\u00adry Britain, the idea that chil\u00addren\u2019s books should include illus\u00adtra\u00adtions had become a kind of social con\u00adsen\u00adsus.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, there was a pub\u00adlish\u00ader named Edmund Evans (1826\u20131905), also a painter and engraver. He was adamant about pro\u00advid\u00ading chil\u00addren with beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly illus\u00adtrat\u00aded books, even in inex\u00adpen\u00adsive edi\u00adtions. He col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded with a num\u00adber of out\u00adstand\u00ading illus\u00adtra\u00adtors to pro\u00adduce a large num\u00adber of exquis\u00adite chil\u00addren\u2019s books. Among the most famous were Wal\u00adter Crane (1845\u20131915), Kate Green\u00adaway (1846\u20131901), and Ran\u00addolph Calde\u00adcott (1846\u20131886), all of whom are con\u00adsid\u00adered the founders of the mod\u00adern pic\u00adture book. Even those metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly illus\u00adtrat\u00aded by mas\u00adter artists sim\u00adply com\u00adbined pic\u00adtures with text. Illus\u00adtra\u00adtions made read\u00ading more enjoy\u00adable and eas\u00adi\u00ader for chil\u00addren to under\u00adstand, but they did\u00adn\u2019t play a deci\u00adsive, essen\u00adtial role in the mean\u00ading of the work.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u00adese pub\u00adlish\u00ader Nao Mat\u00adsui once defined pic\u00adture books in his mind as fol\u00adlows: \u201cPic\u00adture books have a unique rela\u00adtion\u00adship between text and paint\u00ading.
