What a mag\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00ader that is! Miss Pot\u00adter seems to have a deep under\u00adstand\u00ading of the inner world of chil\u00addren. While her sto\u00adries have a touch of didac\u00adti\u00adcism typ\u00adi\u00adcal of that era, they are gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly light\u00adheart\u00aded and play\u00adful, focus\u00ading more on appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion and encour\u00adage\u00adment for chil\u00addren. Most amaz\u00ading\u00adly, the ani\u00admals you see in the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions are clear\u00adly small animals\u2014they\u2019re so accu\u00adrate they could be straight out of an ani\u00admal encyclopedia\u2014yet they pos\u00adsess the demeanor, move\u00adments, and emo\u00adtions of humans (pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly chil\u00addren), often wear\u00ading human cloth\u00ading, and the more you look at them, the more adorable they become. Read\u00ading such sto\u00adries, you might even uncon\u00adscious\u00adly imag\u00adine your\u00adself as a mem\u00adber of the ani\u00admal fam\u00adi\u00adly, shar\u00ading their joys and sor\u00adrows. The per\u00adfect com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of nat\u00adur\u00adal and real\u00adis\u00adtic ani\u00admal images with vivid fan\u00adta\u00adsy is Miss Pot\u00adter\u2019s most mag\u00adi\u00adcal fea\u00adture, and no one has sur\u00adpassed her in this field so far.<\/p>\n<p>But even she did\u00adn\u2019t real\u00adize it at the time. The More chil\u00addren, out of their love for the illus\u00adtrat\u00aded sto\u00adries, asked their moth\u00ader to keep every let\u00adter safe. Anne metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly pre\u00adserved them, encour\u00adag\u00ading Pot\u00adter to adapt them into a book, and promis\u00ading to lend them back to her at any time. In 1900, Pot\u00adter final\u00adly decid\u00aded to adapt The Tale of Peter Rab\u00adbit. Based on pub\u00adlish\u00ading needs and, report\u00aded\u00adly, on the advice of Noel, the first read\u00ader, Pot\u00adter sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly expand\u00aded Peter Rab\u00adbit\u2019s adven\u00adtures in the veg\u00adetable gar\u00adden, more than dou\u00adbling the num\u00adber of images.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 3)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706792_8-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u4e09\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>\nThe cov\u00ader of The Tale of Peter Rab\u00adbit, pub\u00adlished by Miss Porter at her own expense in Decem\u00adber 1901<\/p>\n<p>Pot\u00adter insist\u00aded that the book be palm-sized (approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 105 x 140 mm) and in black and white, ensur\u00ading a low cost and price, mak\u00ading it acces\u00adsi\u00adble to as many chil\u00addren as pos\u00adsi\u00adble. How\u00adev\u00ader, the pub\u00adlish\u00aders she sub\u00admit\u00adted the book to were unin\u00adter\u00adest\u00aded, like\u00adly because it was too dif\u00adfer\u00adent from pop\u00adu\u00adlar chil\u00addren\u2019s books at the time. Only one, Fred\u00ader\u00adick Vaugh\u00adan &amp; Co., showed some inter\u00adest, but they were still debat\u00ading whether the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions should be in col\u00ador and the text should be verse. Just before Christ\u00admas 1901, Miss Pot\u00adter self-pub\u00adlished the ini\u00adtial black-and-white edi\u00adtion, print\u00ading 250 copies to give away among friends and fam\u00adi\u00adly while also test\u00ading the waters for sales. The book proved incred\u00adi\u00adbly pop\u00adu\u00adlar, with even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sher\u00adlock Holmes, buy\u00ading a copy for his own chil\u00addren and prais\u00ading its for\u00admat and con\u00adtent. A week or two lat\u00ader, Miss Pot\u00adter print\u00aded anoth\u00ader 200 copies. Vaugh\u00adan &amp; Co. final\u00adly decid\u00aded to pub\u00adlish the book, but rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded a col\u00ador edi\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Masters of the Art of Storytelling for Children (Part 3)\" src=\"https:\/\/ajia.site\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/20706792_9-1.png\" alt=\"\u4e3a\u5b69\u5b50\u8bf4\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5927\u5e08\u4eec\uff08\u4e09\uff09\" border=\"0\"><br>\nCov\u00ader of The Tale of Peter Rab\u00adbit, pub\u00adlished by Vaugh\u00adan &amp; Co., 1902<\/p>\n<p>After the two sides final\u00adized the text, it took near\u00adly six months of revi\u00adsions, dele\u00adtions, col\u00ador\u00ading, dis\u00adcus\u00adsions, redraw\u00ading indi\u00advid\u00adual pan\u00adels, and final\u00adiza\u00adtion. Anoth\u00ader three or four months of pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, proof\u00ading, copy\u00adedit\u00ading, print\u00ading, and bind\u00ading final\u00adly brought the \u201cLit\u00adtle Rab\u00adbit Book\u201d to fruition. Upon its release, 8,000 copies were sold in ear\u00adly Octo\u00adber 1902, with a print run of 28,000 by the end of the year. Soon after, it also achieved great suc\u00adcess across the Atlantic in the Unit\u00aded States. In a 1905 let\u00adter, Porter opti\u00admisti\u00adcal\u00adly pre\u00addict\u00aded, \u201cI believe \u2018Peter\u2019 will be in print until 1907!\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, she was far too con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive. Dur\u00ading this peri\u00adod, she devel\u00adoped a close friend\u00adship with her pub\u00adlish\u00ader, Mr. Nor\u00adman (Fred\u00ader\u00adic Vaugh\u00adan\u2019s youngest son), who offered her unwa\u00adver\u00ading sup\u00adport and sup\u00adport. Nor\u00adman, find\u00ading him\u00adself deeply in love with this strong-willed and pas\u00adsion\u00adate woman, wrote to pro\u00adpose mar\u00adriage. Porter was over\u00adjoyed but also deeply con\u00adcerned. As expect\u00aded, her par\u00adents strong\u00adly opposed the idea, believ\u00ading it was a dis\u00adgrace to mar\u00adry into such a mer\u00adchant fam\u00adi\u00adly. Porter, already 39 years old and still finan\u00adcial\u00adly inde\u00adpen\u00addent, was forced to vig\u00ador\u00adous\u00adly fight her par\u00adents\u2019 case. She con\u00adtin\u00adued to cre\u00adate pic\u00adture books and main\u00adtained her coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with Vaugh\u00adan Com\u00adpa\u00adny. In the near\u00adly 30 years, she cre\u00adat\u00aded a total of 23 pic\u00adture books, all of which have been reprint\u00aded to this day. Unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly, she found that she had become very wealthy, so she bought her\u00adself a farm in the Lake Dis\u00adtrict vil\u00adlage of Thor\u00adley, which made her fall in love with it. She was lat\u00ader deserved\u00adly elect\u00aded Pres\u00adi\u00addent of the British Herd\u00adwick Sheep Soci\u00adety. In her will, she donat\u00aded all of this to the Nation\u00adal Trust, a reli\u00adgious char\u00adi\u00adty ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to pro\u00adtect\u00ading the nat\u00adur\u00adal envi\u00adron\u00adment. Under British law, reli\u00adgious char\u00adi\u00adties\u2019 land can\u00adnot be auc\u00adtioned! Thanks to her tire\u00adless efforts in the lat\u00adter half of her life, no real estate devel\u00adop\u00ader has had a chance to tar\u00adget the Lake Dis\u00adtrict. The Lake Dis\u00adtric\u00adt\u2019s ecol\u00ado\u00adgy has been pre\u00adserved intact, with hares still roam\u00ading the hills and Herd\u00adwick sheep still graz\u00ading leisure\u00adly.
