\nI first heard of Dear Genius on<\/span>2008<\/span>Year<\/span>12<\/span>moon<\/span>2<\/span>day<\/span><\/a>That day, I attend\u00aded a pic\u00adture book lec\u00adture by French artist Mr. Chen Jiang\u00adhong at Bei\u00adhang Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. He men\u00adtioned this col\u00adlec\u00adtion of Ursu\u00adla\u2019s let\u00adters very seri\u00adous\u00adly, say\u00ading that she was a chil\u00addren\u2019s book edi\u00adtor whom he admired very much, and it was a pity that he had no chance to work with her in this life, even just once.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nChen Jiang\u00adhong\u2019s regret intrigued me. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, this Ms. Ursu\u00adla Nord\u00adstrom was Mau\u00adrice Sendak\u2019s edi\u00adtor, and this col\u00adlec\u00adtion of let\u00adters sup\u00adpos\u00aded\u00adly con\u00adtains many let\u00adters to Sendak. Coin\u00adci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly, I was trans\u00adlat\u00ading Where the Wild Things Are at the time and was eager to learn about the book\u2019s ori\u00adgins. So, I quick\u00adly obtained the book, and upon flip\u00adping through it, I felt like I had found a trea\u00adsure.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs for the clas\u00adsic pic\u00adture book \u201cBeasts\u201d, we can also see its gen\u00ader\u00adal for\u00adma\u00adtion process, the pain and ecsta\u00adsy before and after its pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion, and the cheers and hes\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions of peo\u00adple at that time from this col\u00adlec\u00adtion of let\u00adters. For exam\u00adple, we know that the orig\u00adi\u00adnal idea of this book start\u00aded from<\/span>1955<\/span>In 1996, the draft was titled \u201cWhere the Wild Hors\u00ades Haunt\u201d.<\/span>8<\/span>Years in the mak\u00ading, until<\/span>1963<\/span>Even in 1989, the book was still under\u00adgo\u00ading ardu\u00adous revi\u00adsions and illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, bare\u00adly catch\u00ading up on the autumn list. And the moment it was released, the edi\u00adtor con\u00adgrat\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded Sendak with end\u00adless poet\u00adic emo\u00adtion, declar\u00ading it a \u201cgreat mas\u00adter\u00adpiece!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n


\nRead\u00ading such let\u00adters, I feel as if I were in the gold\u00aden age of chil\u00addren\u2019s book pub\u00adlish\u00ading, expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading first\u00adhand the pain of cre\u00adat\u00ading those clas\u00adsic chil\u00addren\u2019s books and the glo\u00adry after their suc\u00adcess.<\/span>80<\/span>Many of them, most of whom were writ\u00aders or painters who worked with Ursu\u00adla at Harper\u2019s Pub\u00adlish\u00ading Com\u00adpa\u00adny, and among them, there are prob\u00ada\u00adbly<\/span>30<\/span>Some are also very famil\u00adiar or rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly famil\u00adiar to Chi\u00adnese read\u00aders, such as<\/span>E.

\nThere are many sim\u00adi\u00adlar lit\u00ader\u00adary anec\u00addotes in Dear Genius, as well as sto\u00adries behind some clas\u00adsic chil\u00addren\u2019s books, which require dis\u00adcern\u00ading read\u00aders to explore.<\/span>EB<\/span>The process of White\u2019s cre\u00adation of three clas\u00adsic fairy tales is also pre\u00adsent\u00aded con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous\u00adly in this col\u00adlec\u00adtion of let\u00adters, espe\u00adcial\u00adly the most famous \u201cChar\u00adlot\u00adte\u2019s Web\u201d. \nThis col\u00adlec\u00adtion of Ursu\u00adla\u2019s let\u00adters is in<\/span>1998<\/span>The pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion of Dear Genius is main\u00adly attrib\u00aduted to its edi\u00adtor Leonard.<\/span>S.<\/span>Mr. Mar\u00adcus.<\/span>1970<\/span>When Mar\u00adcus was study\u00ading at Yale Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in the 1980s, his main inter\u00adest was in the cre\u00adation and study of poet\u00adry. One day after grad\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, he acci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly opened Mar\u00adgaret Wise Brown\u2019s \u201cGood\u00adnight Moon\u201d in a book\u00adstore and was struck by the sim\u00adple and pure poet\u00adry. He found that many of the clues he sort\u00aded out were increas\u00ading\u00adly con\u00adverg\u00ading on Ursu\u00adla, but the infor\u00adma\u00adtion about her was shock\u00ading\u00adly scarce. So he decid\u00aded to do a thor\u00adough review and obtained the con\u00adsent of Harper\u2019s Pub\u00adlish\u00ading House to review and sort out Ursu\u00adla\u2019s let\u00adters in their archives. Unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly, this work took anoth\u00ader two years, because there were more than 1000 Ursu\u00adla let\u00adters pre\u00adserved there.<\/span>10<\/span>Ten thou\u00adsand let\u00adters! \nOf course, the per\u00adson who ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u00aded the most from this book was Mar\u00adcus him\u00adself. He lat\u00ader inter\u00adviewed almost all the peo\u00adple in the chil\u00addren\u2019s book indus\u00adtry who were relat\u00aded to Ursu\u00adla, and the inter\u00adview records were either pub\u00adlished in mag\u00ada\u00adzines or pub\u00adlished in col\u00adlec\u00adtions. Since almost all the pic\u00adture book cre\u00adators of that era had par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded in the cre\u00adation of \u201cGold\u00aden Chil\u00addren\u2019s Books\u201d, he also wrote a book called \u201cGold\u00aden Leg\u00adend\u201d (<\/span>2007<\/span>But the most rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive results are<\/span>2008<\/span>The Guardians of Chil\u00addren\u2019s Books: Ide\u00adal\u00adists, Doers, and the Mak\u00ading of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Chil\u00addren\u2019s Lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, pub\u00adlished in 1996, is a book that spans<\/span>300<\/span>The his\u00adto\u00adry of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan chil\u00addren\u2019s books spans 20 years, and research relat\u00aded to \u201cDear Genius\u201d accounts for more than half a cen\u00adtu\u00adry, and is per\u00adhaps the most impor\u00adtant part.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were many twists and turns and hard\u00adships that I can\u00adnot tell oth\u00aders. If it were not for my unique obses\u00adsion and per\u00adsis\u00adtence, it would prob\u00ada\u00adbly be dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to achieve. Since then, I have formed a trans\u00adla\u00adtion team in the Red Mud Read\u00ading Club, where we have been study\u00ading chil\u00addren\u2019s books for more than three years.<\/span>16<\/span>After a few months, I final\u00adly com\u00adplet\u00aded the trans\u00adla\u00adtion of this book. If it were just a mat\u00adter of lin\u00adguis\u00adtic trans\u00adla\u00adtion, such exten\u00adsive effort would\u00adn\u2019t have been nec\u00ades\u00adsary. How\u00adev\u00ader, as men\u00adtioned ear\u00adli\u00ader, this book cov\u00aders over half a cen\u00adtu\u00adry of peo\u00adple and books in the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan chil\u00addren\u2019s book indus\u00adtry. With\u00adout thor\u00adough back\u00adground research, sim\u00adply trans\u00adlat\u00ading lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly would be a laugh\u00ading\u00adstock. There\u00adfore, at least half of the effort involved in trans\u00adlat\u00ading this book was spent research\u00ading and dis\u00adcussing the con\u00adtext of the let\u00adters. For exam\u00adple, if there were biogra\u00adphies of peo\u00adple men\u00adtioned in the book, I would def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly find them, and if I had\u00adn\u2019t read any of the books men\u00adtioned before, I would also try to read them first. With\u00adout a Chi\u00adnese ver\u00adsion of the book, even accu\u00adrate\u00adly trans\u00adlat\u00ading the title would be dif\u00adfi\u00adcult with\u00adout a thor\u00adough read\u00ading of the entire book, let alone trans\u00adlat\u00ading the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion sur\u00adround\u00ading the book\u2019s cre\u00adation or pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. This was a mas\u00adsive and expen\u00adsive under\u00adtak\u00ading, but for\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, the team mem\u00adbers were all ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts who bought a ton of books before they even received their roy\u00adal\u00adties! There\u00adfore, after the trans\u00adla\u00adtion was com\u00adplet\u00aded, we con\u00adtin\u00adued to do exten\u00adsion work, sort\u00ading out the deeds of the main char\u00adac\u00adters involved in the book, espe\u00adcial\u00adly their growth expe\u00adri\u00adences, to form \u201cThose Sto\u00adries of Genius\u00ades\u201d (to be pub\u00adlished soon), which may help read\u00aders reduce some of the pain of find\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion, and at the same time have a deep\u00ader under\u00adstand\u00ading of the back\u00adground and val\u00adue of \u201cDear Genius\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nUpon hear\u00ading that \u201cDear Genius\u201d would be avail\u00adable in Chi\u00adnese, Mar\u00adcus was incred\u00adi\u00adbly excit\u00aded. In an inter\u00adview with the media at Book Expo Amer\u00adi\u00adca, he spec\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded that Chi\u00adna, a coun\u00adtry with a long his\u00adto\u00adry and grow\u00ading strength, might be eager to learn from the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan expe\u00adri\u00adence in chil\u00addren\u2019s book cre\u00adation and pub\u00adlish\u00ading, which is why they chose to intro\u00adduce this book. He believes Ursu\u00adla is tru\u00adly a good teacher, treat\u00ading both Amer\u00adi\u00adcans and Chi\u00adnese alike. Mar\u00adcus\u2019s guess was spot-on. This is indeed my wish as a chil\u00addren\u2019s read\u00ading pro\u00admot\u00ader. We\u2019ve missed so much ground, and we need to catch up quick\u00adly.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nBut there are so many teach\u00aders, why choose Ursu\u00adla? This ques\u00adtion is real\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to answer. Think about Mar\u00adgaret Wise Brown, the author of clas\u00adsic pic\u00adture books such as \u201cGood\u00adnight Moon\u201d, \u201cThe Run\u00adaway Bun\u00adny\u201d, \u201cThe Island\u201d, and \u201cThe Impor\u00adtant Book\u201d. She was also an edi\u00adtor and the most rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive fig\u00adure of the \u201cBank Street School of Edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u201d, an exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal chil\u00addren\u2019s book cre\u00adation group of that era. In fact, it was she who deeply influ\u00adenced Ursu\u00adla in this regard. Inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, as a big star in the chil\u00addren\u2019s book world at the time, Mar\u00adgaret\u2019s cre\u00adations were divid\u00aded into two major cat\u00ade\u00adgories: one was a very best-sell\u00ading type that could be sold out in one print.<\/span>100<\/span>The pic\u00adture books of this kind ensured her a rather lux\u00adu\u00adri\u00adous life, but they were not usu\u00adal\u00adly the books Ursu\u00adla want\u00aded to pub\u00adlish; but the oth\u00ader part was very exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal, such as the ones list\u00aded above, of which Good\u00adnight Moon had an ini\u00adtial annu\u00adal sales of only near\u00adly<\/span>2000<\/span>She left these lat\u00adter books to Ursu\u00adla, and over time, they became time\u00adless clas\u00adsics. Can you imag\u00adine the strug\u00adgle Ursu\u00adla endured for these books? Before retir\u00ading, she excit\u00aded\u00adly wrote to her high school teacher to tell her that the chil\u00addren\u2019s book depart\u00adment she led had become the most prof\u00aditable in the entire pub\u00adlish\u00ading house. Indeed, after years of per\u00adse\u00adver\u00adance, those once-slow-sell\u00ading books, such as \u201cGood\u00adnight Moon\u201d and \u201cThe Giv\u00ading Tree,\u201d have become cash cows for the pub\u00adlish\u00ading house.<\/span><\/p>\n
