The process of cre\u00adat\u00ading pic\u00adture books for Vir\u00adginia Lee Bur\u00adton must have been quite enjoy\u00adable because she had two amaz\u00ading col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtors: her two sons.<\/p>\n

Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, she did\u00adn\u2019t under\u00adstand the val\u00adue of these two col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtors, and sim\u00adply pur\u00adsued her pic\u00adture book cre\u00adation out of sheer pas\u00adsion. In high school, she had tak\u00aden both paint\u00ading and dance. Although she was pas\u00adsion\u00adate about and excelled at paint\u00ading, she was even more drawn to bal\u00adlet. Upon grad\u00adu\u00adat\u00ading in 1928, she planned to join a tour\u00ading bal\u00adlet com\u00adpa\u00adny. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, her father\u2019s leg was bro\u00adken in an acci\u00addent, forc\u00ading her to stay home to care for him, end\u00ading her \u201cdanc\u00ading career.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, this also led to a part-time job pro\u00advid\u00ading musi\u00adcal sketch\u00ades for news\u00adpa\u00adpers, where she dis\u00adcov\u00adered anoth\u00ader tal\u00adent. In 1930, she enrolled at the Boston School of the Muse\u00adum of Fine Arts, and a year lat\u00ader, she mar\u00adried her instruc\u00adtor, George Demetrius. They soon moved to Fol\u00adly Bay, Mass\u00ada\u00adchu\u00adsetts, where they remained until the birth of their two sons. Besides car\u00ading for her chil\u00addren, Vir\u00adginia devot\u00aded her\u00adself to two oth\u00ader pur\u00adsuits: cre\u00adat\u00ading pic\u00adture books and teach\u00ading tex\u00adtile pat\u00adtern design. Few peo\u00adple know today that she also found great suc\u00adcess in the lat\u00adter endeav\u00ador, grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly estab\u00adlish\u00ading her\u00adself as a \u201cFol\u00adly Bay Design\u00ader.\u201d

Vir\u00adgini\u00ada\u2019s first pic\u00adture book was a com\u00adplete fail\u00adure, reject\u00aded by thir\u00adteen pub\u00adlish\u00aders. She was con\u00adfi\u00addent in her artis\u00adtic tal\u00adent, but why was her work reject\u00aded? Near\u00adly des\u00adper\u00adate, she recalled her eldest son\u2019s reac\u00adtion to the story\u2014he\u2019d yawned pro\u00adfuse\u00adly and fall\u00aden asleep halfway through. Sud\u00adden\u00adly, she real\u00adized the secret:A true pic\u00adture book should be the prod\u00aduct of coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion between adults and chil\u00addren. The usu\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adve\u00adnient way is for adults to coop\u00ader\u00adate with chil\u00addren sin\u00adcere\u00adly and humbly.<\/strong>

\nThe pic\u00adture books she cre\u00adat\u00aded in the next ten years were all the result of her col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with her two sons, among which \u201cThe Lit\u00adtle House\u201d is an immor\u00adtal clas\u00adsic.<\/p>\n

\u201cLit\u00adtle House\u201d may have orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly stemmed from a moth\u00ader\u2019s urge to teach her two sons about the con\u00adcept of time. But how could such an abstract con\u00adcept be con\u00adveyed through visu\u00adals? Mak\u00ading invis\u00adi\u00adble things (like time and emo\u00adtions) vis\u00adi\u00adble to chil\u00addren is the mag\u00adic of pic\u00adture books. And so, the famous lit\u00adtle house appeared, ordi\u00adnary yet endear\u00ading, its door a nose, its steps a mouth, its win\u00addows like talk\u00ading eyes. The lit\u00adtle house remained fixed in its spot with\u00adin the paint\u00ading, watch\u00ading the sun rise and set, the moon wax and wane, and the sea\u00adsons change. Thus, the con\u00adcepts of a day, a month, and a year were nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly com\u00adplet\u00aded. But what remained? The most chal\u00adleng\u00ading con\u00adcept of \u201cage\u201d? This, too, was no chal\u00adlenge for the clever artist moth\u00ader. She asked the lit\u00adtle house to remain where it was, while horse\u00adless car\u00adriages (cars) arrived, fol\u00adlowed by bull\u00addoz\u00aders and road rollers, build\u00ading roads. Then came build\u00adings, small towns, trams, sub\u00adways, ele\u00advat\u00aded rail\u00adways, and final\u00adly sky\u00adscrap\u00aders and metrop\u00ado\u00adlis\u00ades\u2026 until the lit\u00adtle house could no longer see the sun, moon, or stars, and could no longer dis\u00adtin\u00adguish between day and night. The Lit\u00adtle House bears wit\u00adness to the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion of a rur\u00adal vil\u00adlage into a met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00adi\u00adtan city. While the author\u2019s words offer no judg\u00adment, the painter\u2019s inten\u00adtions seem to be cap\u00adtured in the lit\u00adtle house\u00ad\u2019s expres\u00adsion. This is a chil\u00addren\u2019s sto\u00adry, and it sug\u00adgests a reas\u00adsur\u00ading end\u00ading: the lit\u00adtle house, relo\u00adcat\u00aded to the coun\u00adtry\u00adside far out\u00adside the city, final\u00adly smiles hap\u00adpi\u00adly.<\/p>\n

More than six\u00adty years lat\u00ader, when we reread this clas\u00adsic pic\u00adture book again and again, it feels like more than just a dia\u00adgram explain\u00ading the con\u00adcept of time to chil\u00addren. It feels more like a strange prophe\u00adcy, hap\u00adpen\u00ading all around us every day. Peo\u00adple today need to be warned by works like \u201cAvatar,\u201d which are so intense\u00adly stim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading, but com\u00adpared to \u201cLit\u00adtle House,\u201d it lacks the rich\u00adness of its con\u00adtent.<\/p>\n

Vir\u00adginia was\u00adn\u2019t done yet. She was prepar\u00ading a work span\u00adning even longer time peri\u00adods, which was\u00adn\u2019t com\u00adplet\u00aded until 1962. This was \u201cThe Sto\u00adry of Life,\u201d a five-act play on the his\u00adto\u00adry of nat\u00adur\u00adal life, begin\u00adning with the Earth\u00ad\u2019s cre\u00adation and con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00ading through the artist\u2019s own time. This mas\u00adter\u00adpiece, a mas\u00adter\u00adpiece of pic\u00adture books, took her eight years to com\u00adplete and was lat\u00ader hailed as the cul\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion of her art and life.<\/p>\n

Vir\u00adginia Lee Bur\u00adton died of lung can\u00adcer in 1968 at the age of 59. She pub\u00adlished only sev\u00aden pic\u00adture books in her life\u00adtime, but she is rec\u00adog\u00adnized as a mas\u00adter of pic\u00adture books in the his\u00adto\u00adry of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan chil\u00addren\u2019s books.<\/p>\n

Their moth\u00ader recalls that when she was 21, she heard that the painter and sculp\u00adtor was an incred\u00adi\u00adble teacher, so she trav\u00adeled a long way to attend his week\u00adend class\u00ades to learn art.
