To put it blunt\u00adly, they\u2019re going there to swin\u00addle mon\u00adey. Author Pratch\u00adett leaves no room for mys\u00adtery here. The nov\u00adel\u00ad\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal Eng\u00adlish title lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly trans\u00adlates to \u201cMag\u00adic Mau\u00adrice (the cat) and his band of edu\u00adcat\u00aded mice.\u201d It\u2019s a fairy tale trope: these cats and mice can talk, think, and set traps. Though the town is suf\u00adfer\u00ading from a severe rat infes\u00adta\u00adtion, the rat catch\u00ader seems to have every\u00adthing under con\u00adtrol, leav\u00ading the city des\u00adti\u00adtute. Most bizarrely, all the oth\u00ader rats (the nor\u00admal, dumb ones) have van\u00adished! Per\u00adhaps it\u2019s not too much of a spoil\u00ader to reveal this is a con\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adcy orches\u00adtrat\u00aded by the rat catch\u00ader, because there\u2019s an even more ter\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading plot fur\u00adther down the line, one that threat\u00adens even the sur\u00advival of human\u00adi\u00adty. At this crit\u00adi\u00adcal junc\u00adture, when the sto\u00adry seems hope\u00adless, the fan\u00adta\u00adsy nov\u00adel\u00adist sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly does\u00adn\u2019t resort to mag\u00adic, but instead deci\u00adsive\u00adly untan\u00adgles the knot using the same tech\u00adnique Alexan\u00adder the Great used to solve the Gor\u00addian knot. Final\u00adly, light has been cast upon the clouds.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nUpon first read\u00ading this, I thought the sto\u00adry was over, but turn\u00ading the pages, I dis\u00adcov\u00adered there was still a fifth to go. I could\u00adn\u2019t help but won\u00adder, what else does the author have to say? It turns out there\u2019s a climax\u2014the Pied Piper tru\u00adly arrives! Per\u00adhaps this final fifth is what makes Pratch\u00adett tran\u00adscend most ordi\u00adnary writ\u00aders and become a mas\u00adter of fan\u00adta\u00adsy. He asks and attempts to answer a \u201creal ques\u00adtion,\u201d but wise\u00adly leaves no \u201cstan\u00addard answer.\u201d This per\u00adfect end\u00ading embod\u00adies his mas\u00adtery.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sto\u00adry Col\u00adlec\u00adtion<\/b><br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nIf you are famil\u00adiar with fairy tales and juve\u00adnile fan\u00adta\u00adsy sto\u00adries, you will meet many \u201cold friends\u201d in this nov\u00adel.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nThe \u201cAdven\u00adtures of Mr. Bun\u00adny\u201d that per\u00adme\u00adates the entire book is clear\u00adly Miss Pot\u00adter\u2019s \u201cThe Tales of Peter Rab\u00adbit,\u201d or more pre\u00adcise\u00adly, the \u201cWorld of Peter Rab\u00adbit\u201d that encom\u00adpass\u00ades all the lit\u00adtle books. At the end, when dis\u00adcussing it, the may\u00ador con\u00adfess\u00ades that he loved the books, but nev\u00ader real\u00adly liked the rab\u00adbit, pre\u00adfer\u00adring the sup\u00adport\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adters. The nov\u00adel does\u00adn\u2019t specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly empha\u00adsize it, but inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, his daugh\u00adter\u2019s name (Mali\u00adcia) appears from the very begin\u00adning, and it seems to empha\u00adsize through\u00adout that her last name is Grimm\u2014the Grimm of the Broth\u00aders Grimm. If you hap\u00adpen to pay atten\u00adtion and think about it, you can\u2019t help but trig\u00adger a series of asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtions.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nMost writ\u00aders hes\u00adi\u00adtate to be told their work \u201cresem\u00adbles that of a pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsor,\u201d and even occa\u00adsion\u00adal cre\u00adative \u201ccol\u00adli\u00adsions\u201d inevitably lead to a defen\u00adsive response. He says his sto\u00adry seems pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly intend\u00aded to draw the read\u00ader\u2019s atten\u00adtion to issues. Since a sin\u00adgle nov\u00adel typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly can\u2019t con\u00adtain too many issues, he employs exten\u00adsive bor\u00adrow\u00ading, com\u00adpelling the atten\u00adtive read\u00ader to engage with the sub\u00adject. When they begin to gain human-like intel\u00adli\u00adgence and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion abil\u00adi\u00adties, how will they build a soci\u00adety? How will they get along with humans?<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nThis is a big ques\u00adtion. Per\u00adhaps Pratch\u00adett also wants us to think of anoth\u00ader sci-fi clas\u00adsic, \u201cPlan\u00adet of the Apes,\u201d a pop\u00adu\u00adlar sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion nov\u00adel and film series in the 1960s and 1970s, which was remade into the \u201cRise of the Plan\u00adet of the Apes\u201d series in the 2000s. It\u2019s a rather heart\u00adbreak\u00ading yet deeply mov\u00ading series, in which we see the grad\u00adual decline of human\u00adi\u00adty amidst tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal advance\u00adments, while the true \u201chuman\u00adi\u00adty\u201d must be sought in the enlight\u00adened apes.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nPratch\u00adet\u00adt\u2019s mice often embody glimpses of \u201chuman\u00adi\u00adty,\u201d such as Black\u00adie\u2019s remark\u00adable abil\u00adi\u00adty to for\u00adgive the blood\u00adthirsty humans dur\u00ading the barn show\u00addown. How\u00adev\u00ader, they face a sim\u00adi\u00adlar choice to the apes: they dream of a par\u00adadise undis\u00adturbed by humans, but that island seems to exist only in dreams; if forced to coex\u00adist with humans, they face either ruth\u00adless exter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion or enslave\u00adment, or a ter\u00adri\u00adfy\u00ading rise to pow\u00ader, ulti\u00admate\u00adly destroy\u00ading human\u00adi\u00adty. This antag\u00ado\u00adnis\u00adtic, often neces\u00adsi\u00adtat\u00ading anni\u00adhi\u00adla\u00adtion, mir\u00adrors human soci\u00adety, evok\u00ading the Cold War, racial con\u00adflict, reli\u00adgious clash\u00ades, under\u00adpriv\u00adi\u00adleged eth\u00adnic groups, and the under\u00adclass. The oth\u00ader\u00adworld beneath Lon\u00addon, beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly depict\u00aded by Neil Gaiman in his clas\u00adsic nov\u00adel, Utopia, echoes Pratch\u00adet\u00adt\u2019s depic\u00adtion of the sub\u00adter\u00adranean mouse soci\u00adety.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Dis\u00adc\u00adworld Con\u00adve\u00adnience<\/b><br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nBut Pratch\u00adett is not a soci\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgist, nor does he aim to write intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal flares like \u201cUtopia\u201d or \u201cLeviathan\u201d (he\u2019d rather bor\u00adrow them). His fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion with sto\u00adries bor\u00adders on reli\u00adgious belief. Those who love to lis\u00adten to and tell sto\u00adries must first seek com\u00adplete plea\u00adsure, bask\u00ading in the sun\u00adshine of the imag\u00adi\u00adnary world. Humans immersed in imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly relaxed and often defense\u00adless, allow\u00ading inter\u00adest\u00ading ideas to be absorbed through casu\u00adal breaths, or even seep through their pores at who knows when.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nI don\u2019t know how the idea for Dis\u00adc\u00adworld entered Pratch\u00adet\u00adt\u2019s mind. When I first read The Cat and the Young Pied Piper, what puz\u00adzled me most was how it seemed to have no con\u00adnec\u00adtion to the Dis\u00adc\u00adworld at all. Lat\u00ader, I learned that the sto\u00adry takes place in the city of Huber\u00adtus, which is in the Dis\u00adc\u00adworld, so it\u2019s some\u00adwhat con\u00adnect\u00aded. The nov\u00adel is inven\u00adtive and lively\u2014a bit too live\u00adly, to be hon\u00adest. It feels more like a play\u00adful, unbri\u00addled cre\u00adative tale, a bit like an ear\u00adly Tintin sto\u00adry (per\u00adhaps before The Blue Lotus). It\u2019s incred\u00adi\u00adbly enter\u00adtain\u00ading, but the author does\u00adn\u2019t seem to have much to say.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nLet\u2019s con\u00adsid\u00ader it as a frame\u00adwork for the ini\u00adtial map of the Dis\u00adc\u00adworld. In \u201cThe Col\u00ador of Mag\u00adic,\u201d the read\u00ader is tak\u00aden to the edge of that world, near\u00adly swept over a water\u00adfall, and dis\u00adcov\u00aders that the peo\u00adple there, like us, pos\u00adsess good and evil, desire, greed, but also integri\u00adty, courage, and respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty to oth\u00aders and the world. There\u00adfore, telling the sto\u00adry of that world is actu\u00adal\u00adly telling the sto\u00adry of this world, sim\u00adply as a mir\u00adror image.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\nThe slight dif\u00adfer\u00adence is that there is mag\u00adic in that world, and the super\u00adnat\u00adur\u00adal forces that we see in myths, fairy tales, and fan\u00adta\u00adsy sto\u00adries are part of real\u00adi\u00adty in the Dis\u00adc\u00adworld. However\u2014and this is very impor\u00adtant to note\u2014magic in the Dis\u00adc\u00adworld is extreme\u00adly lim\u00adit\u00aded!<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Fan\u00adta\u00adsy mag\u00adic<\/b><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nThe secret to Pratch\u00adet\u00adt\u2019s suc\u00adcess in writ\u00ading about mag\u00adic lies in set\u00adting appro\u00adpri\u00adate lim\u00adits for the mag\u00adic of his imag\u00adi\u00adnary world. In an inter\u00adview, he blunt\u00adly stat\u00aded that set\u00adting lim\u00adits for mag\u00adic is the first rule for writ\u00ading nov\u00adels with mag\u00adic. \u201cIf you could do any\u00adthing with the flick of a fin\u00adger, where would the fun be?\u201d<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nTake, for exam\u00adple, the down-and-out wiz\u00adard Rincewind, expelled from Nether\u00adworld Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty in \u201cThe Col\u00ador of Mag\u00adic.\u201d He knows noth\u00ading but one of eight basic spells, intri\u00adcate\u00adly inte\u00adgrat\u00aded with the fab\u00adric of time and space, that has inex\u00adplic\u00ada\u00adbly found its way into his head. This spell is a tor\u00adture for him, unus\u00adable in nor\u00admal cir\u00adcum\u00adstances, only to sud\u00adden\u00adly and uncon\u00adscious\u00adly sur\u00adface in moments of deep\u00adest despair or dire need. Does\u00adn\u2019t it sound a lot like Duan Yu\u2019s Six Merid\u00adi\u00adans Divine Sword in \u201cThe Demi-Gods and Semi-Dev\u00adils\u201d? Even Jin Yong ulti\u00admate\u00adly allows Duan Yu to mas\u00adter this mag\u00adi\u00adcal mar\u00adtial art. But Pratch\u00adett sim\u00adply does\u00adn\u2019t let the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist and the read\u00ader rev\u00adel in this, forc\u00ading you to wait in ago\u00adniz\u00ading antic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adtion. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, you real\u00adize that wait\u00ading for mag\u00adic is bet\u00adter than using your brain and courage.<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\nMau\u00adrice the tom\u00adcat and his group of mice pos\u00adsess no mag\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00aders oth\u00ader than the abil\u00adi\u00adty to speak and think. Kei\u00adth the boy is even more mediocre, while Mali\u00adcia the girl pos\u00adsess\u00ades only a bound\u00adless imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. Yet, as you read this book, you sense that this strange team grows ever more pow\u00ader\u00adful. Why is this so? From the mice\u2019s per\u00adspec\u00adtive, the blind Dan\u00adger\u00adous Beans seems the most use\u00adless, yet he becomes the soul of the group, even the world\u00adly-wise Mau\u00adrice will\u00ading\u00adly sac\u00adri\u00adfices his own life to save his. Why is this so? When the antag\u00ado\u00adnis\u00adtic humans and mice final\u00adly come face to face, they sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly find a third path to har\u00admo\u00adnious coex\u00adis\u00adtence. How did this hap\u00adpen?
