Let\u2019s mea\u00adsure it again. Hmm, it\u2019s just the right size\u2014the same size as an iPad! So, car\u00adtoon\u00adist and chil\u00addren\u2019s book illus\u00adtra\u00adtor Patrick McDon\u00adnell cre\u00adat\u00aded a book that\u2019s a near-per\u00adfect repli\u00adca of the iPad. That\u2019s a prob\u00adlem, and adults might be won\u00adder\u00ading: We\u2019re already strug\u00adgling to get our kids to use screens less. \nThis book is broad\u00adly told in two modes. The first half can be described as \u201ciPad-style,\u201d requir\u00ading a pass\u00adword to enter. It then unfolds the sto\u00adry of a cave\u00adman boy named Tyke, seem\u00ading\u00adly revealed through a swipe of an iPad screen. This sto\u00adry has its own num\u00adbered pages, inter\u00adspersed with emo\u00adjis as the plot pro\u00adgress\u00ades. As the pages turn, the bat\u00adtery lev\u00adel indi\u00adca\u00adtor in the upper right cor\u00adner changes col\u00ador, even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly turn\u00ading red and then dis\u00adap\u00adpear\u00ading into a black screen. After a vol\u00adcanic erup\u00adtion, a black screen, and a dis\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00aded con\u00adnec\u00adtion, Tyke escapes the iPad book and enters the con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal \u201cpic\u00adture book\u201d world of the sec\u00adond half. Upon return\u00ading to this world, Tyke becomes a liv\u00ading per\u00adson again (albeit a lit\u00adtle sav\u00adage), curi\u00adous about every\u00adthing around him, full of love and enthu\u00adsi\u00adasm for his par\u00adents and friends, and his vibrant ener\u00adgy rekin\u00addled through the games he plays.

Per\u00adhaps the most remark\u00adable thing about it is that it can make both the advis\u00ader and the one being advised burst into laugh\u00adter. It\u2019s said that this sto\u00adry took him eight years from con\u00adcep\u00adtion to pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion. It first came in 2008, when he drew a lit\u00adtle prim\u00adi\u00adtive boy in his sketch\u00adbook, with the words \u201cCave Boy\u201d writ\u00adten on it. The boy was hold\u00ading a large wood\u00aden stick and say\u00ading \u201cUh-huh.\u201d So, back then, his name was\u00adn\u2019t \u201cTek,\u201d but \u201cUh-huh.\u201d McDon\u00adnell found the boy hilar\u00adi\u00adous and amus\u00ading, and began to won\u00adder if he deserved a sto\u00adry. The ini\u00adtial humor and amuse\u00adment prob\u00ada\u00adbly came from the boy\u2019s image, with his full beard and adorable expres\u00adsion. Yes, since he\u2019s a prim\u00adi\u00adtive man, even the boy has a full beard, which is quite amus\u00ading. How\u00adev\u00ader, we imag\u00adine prim\u00adi\u00adtive peo\u00adple spend\u00ading their days in nature, strug\u00adgling against the harsh envi\u00adron\u00adment, or liv\u00ading a sim\u00adple and care\u00adfree life. The \u201cCave Boy\u201d image, on the oth\u00ader hand, evokes the image of a boy who spends his days in a cave, nev\u00ader leav\u00ading. Why is he so reclu\u00adsive? If you jump to the present, you might imag\u00adine the image of a lit\u00adtle game fan who stays indoors all day. When the big stick in the cave boy\u2019s hand is replaced by a mobile phone or game con\u00adsole, this fun\u00adny sto\u00adry is about to unfold.

\nThe first pic\u00adture book by McDon\u00adnell I encoun\u00adtered was \u201cI\u2026 Have a Dream,\u201d pub\u00adlished in 2011. It\u2019s a biog\u00adra\u00adphy of the renowned pri\u00adma\u00adtol\u00ado\u00adgist Jane Goodall and win\u00adner of the 2012 Calde\u00adcott Medal. I learned then that McDon\u00adnell was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly a renowned car\u00adtoon\u00adist, renowned world\u00adwide for his com\u00adic strip \u201cMutts.\u201d It was\u00adn\u2019t until 2005 that he began exper\u00adi\u00adment\u00ading with chil\u00addren\u2019s pic\u00adture books. \u201cI\u2026 Have a Dream\u201d was prob\u00ada\u00adbly his most suc\u00adcess\u00adful work after sev\u00ader\u00adal attempts. He sub\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly became increas\u00ading\u00adly active in this new field. He explained that he had been pas\u00adsion\u00adate about comics since the age of five, draw\u00ading con\u00adstant\u00adly. His start\u00ading point for cre\u00adat\u00ading pic\u00adture books for chil\u00addren was to make them find draw\u00ading enjoy\u00adable. He would start by cre\u00adat\u00ading a bunch of fun draw\u00adings and then decide to weave them into a play\u00adful sto\u00adry. As for the sto\u00adry of \u201cTyke,\u201d McDon\u00adnell would draw relat\u00aded sto\u00adries every once in a while when\u00adev\u00ader he had a fun idea. For exam\u00adple, Tyke\u2019s best friend was a dinosaur. The prob\u00adlem was that the dinosaur was so big it could\u00adn\u2019t get into Tyke\u2019s cave, so he had to call out to him from out\u00adside, but he would\u00adn\u2019t come out. It was quite amus\u00ading to think about it. Then there was Tyke\u2019s par\u00adents, who were cave dwellers too, of course, but the fun\u00adny thing was that his dad was an inven\u00adtor, claim\u00ading to have invent\u00aded every\u00adthing, even the inter\u00adnet, which Tyke was obsessed with! McDon\u00adnell kept draw\u00ading and think\u00ading like this, and by 2015, he had a ton of images relat\u00aded to this boy\u2019s sto\u00adries. After anoth\u00ader year of design\u00ading and orga\u00adniz\u00ading them, the book \u201cTyke\u201d became the fun book we see today.

It\u2019s like\u00adly a trib\u00adute to Mar\u00adgaret Wise Brown\u2019s \u201cGood\u00adnight Moon,\u201d where the bun\u00adny from \u201cGood\u00adnight Moon\u201d hosts a \u201cslum\u00adber par\u00adty\u201d in \u201cThank You, Good\u00adnight.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, McDon\u00adnell has anoth\u00ader iden\u00adti\u00adty and a sense of pur\u00adpose that gives him more room for expres\u00adsion. Like Jane Goodall, he is a pas\u00adsion\u00adate ani\u00admal rights activist and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adist, which has led him to main\u00adtain a veg\u00ade\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan diet for over 20 years. The bun\u00adny\u2019s good\u00adnight rit\u00adu\u00adal express\u00ades grat\u00adi\u00adtude for all cre\u00adation.

\nBeneath the comedic veneer of \u201cTek,\u201d McDon\u00adnell seem\u00ading\u00adly casu\u00adal\u00adly slips in the prin\u00adci\u00adples of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal change and ani\u00admal evo\u00adlu\u00adtion, con\u00adnect\u00ading humans (even those who invent\u00aded the inter\u00adnet) with the nat\u00adur\u00adal world as one, with no dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion between supe\u00adri\u00ador and infe\u00adri\u00ador. This, in fact, serves as a sub\u00adtle alle\u00adgo\u00adry for human\u00adi\u00adty\u2019s obses\u00adsion with high tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy. When Tek is eject\u00aded from his iPad, his first words are \u201cTek is awake\u201d\u2014perhaps sym\u00adbol\u00adic. Undoubt\u00aded\u00adly, as Tek opens his arms to embrace this \u201cwide, beau\u00adti\u00adful world,\u201d he is also filled with grat\u00adi\u00adtude.
