The Tai\u00adwanese tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal Chi\u00adnese trans\u00adla\u00adtion by Lin Haiyin is a direct trans\u00adla\u00adtion of it as *The Fun\u00adny Lit\u00adtle Woman*. I knew about this book before trans\u00adlat\u00ading it (I even had the copy, but refrained from read\u00ading it), but ulti\u00admate\u00adly aban\u00addoned the direct trans\u00adla\u00adtion and chose what might sound a lit\u00adtle strange: \u201cThe Laugh\u00ading Woman Who Throws Rice Balls.\u201d Why was that? It\u2019s a long sto\u00adry, so please let me explain.<\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist of this book is obvi\u00adous\u00adly a grand\u00admoth\u00ader, and it is dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to asso\u00adciate \u201clit\u00adtle women\u201d with old\u00ader women in Chi\u00adnese. How\u00adev\u00ader, the \u201clit\u00adtle women\u201d which is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly famous in chil\u00addren\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture is obvi\u00adous\u00adly about four girls who are about to grow up, so \u201c<\/span>I think \u201cLit\u00adtle Women\u201d is a title that eas\u00adi\u00adly evokes mis\u00adcon\u00adcep\u00adtions and should be dis\u00adcard\u00aded. This sto\u00adry clear\u00adly reads like a folk tale, in which the terms \u201cpozi\u201d and \u201cold woman\u201d are often used to describe old\u00ader women. I checked sev\u00ader\u00adal ver\u00adsions of the trans\u00adla\u00adtion process and used sev\u00ader\u00adal alter\u00adna\u00adtive titles, includ\u00ading \u201cThe Laugh\u00ading Old Woman,\u201d \u201cThe Laugh\u00ading Old Woman,\u201d and \u201cThe Old Woman Who Lost Her Rice Ball.\u201d<\/span>

\nCom\u00adpared to \u201cold woman,\u201d I pre\u00adfer \u201claugh\u00ading old woman,\u201d as it does\u00adn\u2019t seem as \u201cold-look\u00ading.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, the prob\u00adlem is that \u201chehe\u00adhe\u201d and \u201claugh\u201d are redun\u00addant, cre\u00adat\u00ading a strong effect that does\u00adn\u2019t quite fit the book\u2019s tone, which is actu\u00adal\u00adly a lit\u00adtle scary. Choos\u00ading a book title often depends on what the sto\u00adry is try\u00ading to say. But what is this book try\u00ading to say?<\/span>

\nI noticed that the author\u2019s name in the Tai\u00adwanese edi\u00adtion is list\u00aded direct\u00adly as \u201cArlene Mosel.\u201d This book won the Calde\u00adcott Medal in 1973, and the author is Amer\u00adi\u00adcan. How could he tell such an authen\u00adtic Japan\u00adese folk\u00adtale? The cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00ading author\u2019s name in the Eng\u00adlish edi\u00adtion is \u201cRetold by Arlene Mosel\u201d\u2014it turns out the author of this pic\u00adture book is just a \u201creteller.\u201d So who is the orig\u00adi\u00adnal author? Or is it sim\u00adply a pure\u00adly Japan\u00adese folk\u00adtale?<\/span>

\nInter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, there is no eye-catch\u00ading mark in the Eng\u00adlish ver\u00adsion, only a very small line of words on the copy\u00adright page:The Fun\u00adny Lit\u00adtle Woman<\/i> \u201cIt is based on a tale by Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn\u201d\u2014but who is this strange\u00adly named Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn? A quick Google search revealed that it was him\u2014Lafcadio Hearn! Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn is a renowned fig\u00adure even in the his\u00adto\u00adry of mod\u00adern Chi\u00adnese lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, hav\u00ading had a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant impact. His col\u00adlec\u00adtions of Japan\u00adese folk tales, such as \u201cKwaidan,\u201d still have many read\u00aders today.<\/span>

The life of Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn is quite leg\u00adendary. He was born in Greece, grew up in Eng\u00adland and France, spent most of his first half of his life work\u00ading in the Unit\u00aded States. He went to Japan on busi\u00adness, but end\u00aded up stay\u00ading there because he was fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00aded by Japan\u00adese cul\u00adture. He mar\u00adried a Japan\u00adese woman and named him\u00adself Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn after her sur\u00adname. <\/span>Yakumo)\u2026but the Japan\u00adese folk tales he col\u00adlect\u00aded and com\u00adpiled were most\u00adly Goth\u00adic in style, full of strange and bizarre things, and often quite scary!<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to trans\u00adlate this book and get a feel for it, I tried to read all the Japan\u00adese folk tales com\u00adpiled by Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn that I could find. I also bought an Eng\u00adlish-lan\u00adguage anthol\u00ado\u00adgy, a col\u00adlec\u00adtion of sto\u00adries spe\u00adcial\u00adly select\u00aded for chil\u00addren \u2014 I want\u00aded to know what peo\u00adple in the Eng\u00adlish-speak\u00ading world thought of Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn\u2019s poten\u00adtial\u00adly chill\u00ading ghost sto\u00adries.<\/span><\/p>\n

  In this book, I think I found the orig\u00adi\u00adnal ver\u00adsion that Arlene Moser read. The Eng\u00adlish title of the sto\u00adry is: The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumplings\u2014currently trans\u00adlat\u00aded into Chi\u00adnese as \u201cThe Old Woman Who Lost Her Rice Balls,\u201d which again proves that trans\u00adlat\u00ading it as \u201cLit\u00adtle Woman\u201d is inap\u00adpro\u00adpri\u00adate! The phrase \u201clost rice balls\u201d gave me a lot of inspi\u00adra\u00adtion, and the final title, \u201cThe Laugh\u00ading Old Woman Who Lost Her Rice Balls,\u201d is relat\u00aded to this; this name com\u00adbines Moser\u2019s \u201cFun\u00adny Lit\u00adtle Woman\u201d with Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal title. I think the trans\u00adla\u00adtor\u2019s role is also one of \u201cretelling,\u201d and when retelling, one should refer to the orig\u00adi\u00adnal ver\u00adsion.<\/span>

Judg\u00ading from Laf\u00adca\u00addio Hearn\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal ver\u00adsion, the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist is indeed an \u201cold woman\u201d! But is this sto\u00adry sim\u00adply for fun? In Eng\u00adlish, the old wom\u00adan\u2019s laugh is \u201cTee-he-he-he,\u201d and the ghosts\u2019 laughs are also \u201cTee-he-he-he.\u201d Either the ghosts laugh like the old woman, or the old wom\u00adan\u2019s laugh resem\u00adbles the ghosts\u2019 laugh. Why is this? How should we under\u00adstand this? (The Tai\u00adwanese Lin Hai translit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion makes a dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion on this point: the old woman laughs \u201cHee! Hee! To under\u00adstand the mean\u00ading of this laugh\u00adter (and thus deter\u00admine how to trans\u00adlate it), I had to con\u00adtin\u00adue my research. So I began search\u00ading for books on Japan\u00adese folk lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, and luck\u00adi\u00adly, after a week or two of fran\u00adtic search\u00ading, I found a fan\u00adtas\u00adtic book: Hayao Kawai\u2019s The Leg\u00adends and Souls of the Japan\u00adese!<\/span>

Hayao Kawai is not only a psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgist but also deeply knowl\u00adedge\u00adable about chil\u00addren, chil\u00addren\u2019s lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture, and pic\u00adture books. His book \u201cA Child\u2019s Uni\u00adverse\u201d is a trea\u00adsure trove of mine, and you\u2019ll also dis\u00adcov\u00ader his pro\u00adfound under\u00adstand\u00ading of pic\u00adture books in \u201cThe Pow\u00ader of Pic\u00adture Books.\u201d What is this book, \u201cLeg\u00adends and the Soul of the Japan\u00adese,\u201d about? In his own words, he explains: \u201cFrom the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of depth psy\u00adchol\u00ado\u00adgy, the author attempts to explore the essence of the Japan\u00adese soul through Japan\u00adese folk tales. The recent inter\u00adest in folk tales sug\u00adgests that, faced with the intense impact of mod\u00adern\u00adiza\u00adtion and inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion, Japan is con\u00adscious\u00adly or uncon\u00adscious\u00adly seek\u00ading to redis\u00adcov\u00ader its own soul through ancient, time-hon\u00adored folk tales.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, in \u201cGhost Laugh\u00adter,\u201d the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist is the moth\u00ader.  It is pre\u00adcise\u00adly because of the inspi\u00adra\u00adtion from Hayao Kawai that I under\u00adstand this sen\u00adtence on the back cov\u00ader of the Chi\u00adnese ver\u00adsion of this pic\u00adture book:<\/span>There is no absolute strength. Because of the laugh\u00adter, the strength of the ghost com\u00adplete\u00adly col\u00adlapsed. Although in Kawai Hayao\u2019s opin\u00adion, this is very<\/span>It has a \u201cJapan\u00adese con\u00adno\u00adta\u00adtion,\u201d but it can also be regard\u00aded as a con\u00adsen\u00adsus among peo\u00adple all over the world.
