A short book worth read\u00ading and savor\u00ading slow\u00adly. Peter is a 10-year-old boy who dreams all day long. The open\u00ading sto\u00adry, \u201cPeter the Man,\u201d is quite amus\u00ading. The sev\u00aden sub\u00adse\u00adquent sto\u00adries depict Peter in either dream or non-dream states (who can real\u00adly tell?), seemed sil\u00adly at first, but the sec\u00adond sto\u00adry, \u201cThe Cat,\u201d was a thrilling rev\u00ade\u00adla\u00adtion, a pro\u00adfound insight into life. The fourth sto\u00adry, \u201cThe Over\u00adlord,\u201d had me even more lost in thought, as if I were glimps\u00ading a vast and pro\u00adfound pat\u00adtern\u2026 Over\u00adall, though, intu\u00aditive\u00adly, these are just some fun child\u00adhood sto\u00adries. But why, after read\u00ading them, do I feel a sense of melan\u00adcholy?<\/p>\n

As McE\u00adwan said, this book is prob\u00ada\u00adbly told to adults under the ban\u00adner of chil\u00addren, using lan\u00adguage and sto\u00adries that chil\u00addren can under\u00adstand. It talks about what the author wants to say. Sim\u00adply put, it is noth\u00ading more than life and love.<\/p>\n

I only real\u00adized halfway through that the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions in this book were drawn by Antho\u00adny Brown! Mr. Sun Zhongx\u00adu\u2019s trans\u00adla\u00adtion deserves a huge thumbs up.<\/p>\n

Who knows what oth\u00ader tricks Emi\u00adly can pull off? While this book isn\u2019t exact\u00adly mind-blow\u00ading, it cer\u00adtain\u00adly chal\u00adlenges the read\u00ader. At first, I thought it might be a print\u00ading mis\u00adtake! It was\u00adn\u2019t until I flipped through it for the third time that I final\u00adly under\u00adstood that the spells the frog had been prac\u00adtic\u00ading were actu\u00adal\u00adly two-part, mean\u00ading there are actu\u00adal\u00adly 36 pos\u00adsi\u00adble com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtions for the six spell pairs! \u2014 If you only prac\u00adticed six spells after read\u00ading this book, you\u2019d be miss\u00ading out.<\/p>\n

The sto\u00adry is sim\u00adple: a frog painstak\u00ading\u00adly stud\u00adies a mag\u00adic spell and final\u00adly trans\u00adforms him\u00adself into a prince, earn\u00ading the princess\u2019s longed-for kiss. And then\u2026 I won\u2019t spoil the sto\u00adry. Such a sim\u00adple idea can lead to such a delight\u00adful pic\u00adture book, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly because it adheres to the prin\u00adci\u00adples of play in a good chil\u00addren\u2019s book. \u201cGames + humor\u201d is the mag\u00adic for\u00admu\u00adla for a good chil\u00addren\u2019s book.<\/p>\n

The book\u2019s cre\u00adativ\u00adi\u00adty lies in the fact that it can\u2019t be told using Pow\u00ader\u00adPoint or any oth\u00ader elec\u00adtron\u00adic gad\u00adgets; it must be told through a tac\u00adtile book with pages that can be flipped back and forth. It proves that paper pic\u00adture books should last for\u00adev\u00ader.<\/p>\n

The beau\u00adti\u00adful cher\u00adry tree is the boy\u2019s dream, but between him and the tree lies a fast-flow\u00ading riv\u00ader, strewn with count\u00adless twigs and rocks that could cause bumps and bruis\u00ades\u2026 The boy encoun\u00adters numer\u00adous obsta\u00adcles, includ\u00ading the bird that always offers guid\u00adance at cru\u00adcial moments. Of course, the great\u00adest obsta\u00adcle is him\u00adself, but he final\u00adly plunges into the riv\u00ader\u2026<\/p>\n

This is a very sub\u00adstan\u00adtial pic\u00adture book of Chi\u00adnese folk tales, pos\u00adsi\u00adbly the first to fea\u00adture the Great Wall of Chi\u00adna! It\u2019s said that the orig\u00adi\u00adnal idea for this book was to cre\u00adate a pic\u00adture book about the Great Wall\u2014and putting aside the mer\u00adits and demer\u00adits of this awe-inspir\u00ading human con\u00adstruc\u00adtion, it\u2019s a shame that it has\u00adn\u2019t been prop\u00ader\u00adly told and depict\u00aded in a pic\u00adture book! Almost ten years ago, Mr. Nao Mat\u00adsui came up with the idea, and Teacher Cai Gao began a lengthy process of research and cre\u00adation. Mr. Tang Yam\u00ading even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly took on the text, and the Japan\u00adese edi\u00adtion was pub\u00adlished in 2012, fol\u00adlowed by a Chi\u00adnese edi\u00adtion in 2015. Nao Mat\u00adsui said, \u201cThis book sur\u00adpass\u00ades The Sto\u00adry of Peach Blos\u00adsom Spring.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the sur\u00adface, this is the famil\u00adiar folk tale of Meng Jiangnu, search\u00ading for her hus\u00adband to bring her win\u00adter clothes, and her tears col\u00adlaps\u00ading the 800-li Great Wall. The first half also bears echoes of Peach Blos\u00adsom Spring and Hua Mulan. But grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly, anoth\u00ader thread emerges: the Great Wall, majes\u00adtic and immen\u00adsi\u00adty. Clos\u00ader inspec\u00adtion reveals the details of the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion site and the lives of the toil\u00ading ants. Final\u00adly, when the Great Wall col\u00adlaps\u00ades, it has become a bound\u00adless expanse of spir\u00adits\u2026<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the kind of pic\u00adture book designed to make chil\u00addren laugh, but per\u00adhaps it\u2019s the kind of sto\u00adry we have to tell our chil\u00addren. We\u2019ve come a long way from his\u00adto\u00adry, car\u00adry\u00ading a heavy bur\u00adden, and we should at least let our chil\u00addren know what that bur\u00adden is. Pic\u00adture books may be the eas\u00adi\u00adest and most engag\u00ading way to tell this sto\u00adry.<\/p>\n
