\nI\u2019m an artist, writer, and art pro\u00admot\u00ader. For fif\u00adteen years, I\u2019ve illus\u00adtrat\u00aded chil\u00addren\u2019s books and taught chil\u00addren\u2019s art class\u00ades. My comics have been pub\u00adlished, exhib\u00adit\u00aded, and won awards in many coun\u00adtries. I cre\u00adat\u00aded the exlib\u00adris \u201cYears in Books\u201d for Duku mag\u00ada\u00adzine and pub\u00adlished a pic\u00adture book in the Unit\u00aded States, \u201cOh My God! Wrong!\u201d I\u2019ve also giv\u00aden lec\u00adtures on art appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion and pic\u00adture book read\u00ading at places like the Han\u00adfen\u00adlou Book\u00adstore in Wang\u00adfu\u00adjing and the Nation\u00adal Muse\u00adum of Chi\u00adna.<\/p>\n

\nPic\u00adture books are com\u00admon in all eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly devel\u00adoped coun\u00adtries and regions, and they are the pri\u00adma\u00adry source of read\u00ading for young chil\u00addren in these regions. Why are pic\u00adture books so impor\u00adtant? They con\u00adsist of a few thin pages of illus\u00adtra\u00adtions and few words. There are even many \u201cword\u00adless\u201d books that don\u2019t even require any text. These books are com\u00adplete\u00adly use\u00adless for learn\u00ading to read. So, what use are they to chil\u00addren?<\/p>\n

    
\nA thin pic\u00adture book can eas\u00adi\u00adly cost dozens of yuan, while chil\u00addren\u2019s books com\u00admon\u00adly found in super\u00admar\u00adkets, book\u00adstores, and news\u00adstands are often at least a hun\u00addred pages long and only cost a dozen yuan. The price-per\u00adfor\u00admance ratio seems quite high, so would\u00adn\u2019t it be a good idea to let chil\u00addren read these books? They help chil\u00addren learn to read, save mon\u00adey, and are thick\u00ader, allow\u00ading them to read for longer. So why do so many peo\u00adple choose thin, expen\u00adsive pic\u00adture books?<\/p>\n

   
\nI often hear peo\u00adple say that pic\u00adture books are a form of art. Art is so pro\u00adfound that even adults can\u2019t under\u00adstand it, so how can chil\u00addren under\u00adstand it? And what good are these things for chil\u00addren?

\nThe secret lies with\u00adin the pages of a book. This lec\u00adture, com\u00adpar\u00ading and ana\u00adlyz\u00ading out\u00adstand\u00ading pic\u00adture books with com\u00admon chil\u00addren\u2019s books from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of a sea\u00adsoned pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal, reveals the inner work\u00adings of chil\u00addren\u2019s book pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and the dire con\u00adse\u00adquences it can have on chil\u00addren. The drug cyanamide, once ram\u00adpant in the food indus\u00adtry, per\u00adsists in chil\u00addren\u2019s read\u00ading and edu\u00adca\u00adtion, even more sub\u00adtly, and its harm is incal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adble. We adults hold far too many mis\u00adun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00adings about chil\u00addren. To ensure the healthy and hap\u00adpy growth of chil\u00addren, we must change many of our beliefs.<\/p>\n
