It could have been as sim\u00adple as not even includ\u00ading the black cat, but the artist loves cats so much that he wants them to be with him wher\u00adev\u00ader he lives. There\u00adfore, for him, a sto\u00adry that strives for per\u00adfec\u00adtion can\u00adnot be with\u00adout a cat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nOkay, enough of that small talk. Look at that dad! With\u00adout a word, he sets off car\u00adry\u00ading a long lad\u00adder. You can\u2019t tell how long it is; even if you flip open the two folds, you can\u2019t see the end. Such a lad\u00adder would be per\u00adfect for a moun\u00adtain (so high you can even see the top), with the oth\u00ader end reach\u00ading the moon. Dad climbs up to the moon. Eric Car\u00adle seems to lean towards the lat\u00adter. His self-writ\u00adten and illus\u00adtrat\u00aded pic\u00adture books typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly have the fol\u00adlow\u00ading char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics: the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions are very dis\u00adtinct, almost instant\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adniz\u00adable; the sto\u00adry\u00adlines are sim\u00adple, rarely involv\u00ading com\u00adplex twists and turns, but always with a moment of sur\u00adprise; the morals seem to have some sub\u00adstance, but are gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly vague; the sto\u00adries con\u00adtain some knowl\u00adedge, but are more play\u00adful than rig\u00ador\u00adous; the design of the books often has a strong sense of play\u00adful\u00adness, giv\u00ading the books an over\u00adall feel more like toys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nPer\u00adhaps due to these char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics, Car\u00adl\u2019s pic\u00adture books are not eas\u00adi\u00adly tak\u00aden seri\u00adous\u00adly by aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic researchers, as they sim\u00adply can\u00adnot find much to study or com\u00adment on. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, since the fun of these pic\u00adture books often stems from their being more like toys, judges of major award pro\u00adgrams have felt it unnec\u00ades\u00adsary to award him a major pic\u00adture book award. How\u00adev\u00ader, this has not pre\u00advent\u00aded read\u00aders of all ages from deeply embrac\u00ading his work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nUnlike most illus\u00adtra\u00adtors, Eric Car\u00adle is a keen artist who demon\u00adstrates his cre\u00adative process. Detailed images depict\u00ading his process can be found on his offi\u00adcial web\u00adsite, and he also enjoys show\u00ading you his draw\u00adings while he talks dur\u00ading tele\u00advi\u00adsion inter\u00adviews. He main\u00adtains that his tech\u00adniques are noth\u00ading to be tri\u00adfled with, even claim\u00ading they\u2019re so sim\u00adple that even a child could learn them. If you\u2019re not con\u00advinced, bring your chil\u00addren along and try them out. Watch\u00ading him paint in the videos is tru\u00adly a joy. Sim\u00adply lay\u00ading out a sheet of paper, pick\u00ading up a brush and paint, he smears and dabs, then casu\u00adal\u00adly cuts and pastes, and a beau\u00adti\u00adful world and vivid images appear before your eyes.<br>\n<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nYet, such a sim\u00adple sto\u00adry and seem\u00ading\u00adly casu\u00adal illus\u00adtra\u00adtions can tru\u00adly move read\u00aders. A senior friend in the pub\u00adlish\u00ading indus\u00adtry told me that she chose to cre\u00adate pic\u00adture books because she could not for\u00adget the pro\u00adfound impact she felt the first time she read \u201cDad\u00addy, I Want the Moon.\u201d Anoth\u00ader friend\u2019s four-year-old boy, after hear\u00ading the book for the first time, imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly ran excit\u00aded\u00adly to the bal\u00adcony and searched every\u00adwhere. When asked what he was look\u00ading for, he replied, \u201cI want to help Dad find a lad\u00adder!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nI firm\u00adly believe that won\u00adder\u00adful books can pro\u00adduce won\u00adder\u00adful pow\u00ader. But where does this won\u00adder\u00adful pow\u00ader come from?
