While we laughed from begin\u00adning to end, I could\u00adn\u2019t help but feel like this was\u00adn\u2019t the Smurfs I remem\u00adbered from my child\u00adhood! I under\u00adstand the shift in focus when the film\u2019s set\u00adting shifts from a mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous vil\u00adlage to the metrop\u00ado\u00adlis of New York, but the shift is quite dra\u00admat\u00adic.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nCome to think of it, per\u00adhaps what I am most uncom\u00adfort\u00adable with is not being able to hear the famil\u00adiar \u201cSong of the Smurfs\u201d: \u201cOn the oth\u00ader side of the mountain\/on the oth\u00ader side of the sea\/there is a group of Smurfs\/They are live\u00adly and smart\/They are naughty and agile\/They live freely in the big green for\u00adest\u2026\u201d \u2014 This song left such a deep impres\u00adsion. It almost per\u00adfect\u00adly inter\u00adprets the joy and yearn\u00ading that those cute blue elves brought to our gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion.&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nHere\u2019s a fun\u00adny sto\u00adry. When the Hong\u00adni\u00adba Vil\u00adlage web\u00adsite was first launched in 2000, every\u00adone urged Inspec\u00adtor Car\u00adrot to write a vil\u00adlage song. He woke up in the morn\u00ading, not even brush\u00ading his teeth, and scrib\u00adbled away, \u201cBeyond the mountains\/Beyond the clouds\/There\u2019s a green field\/There\u2019s a small village\/In that small village\/In that fairy\u00adtale paradise\/There are gold\u00aden roofs\/There are glow\u00ading red walls\/And me and my close friends\u2026\u201d Clear\u00adly, this vil\u00adlage song was heav\u00adi\u00adly influ\u00adenced by the Chi\u00adnese cul\u00adture, but it also reflects the shared dream of the young peo\u00adple who found\u00aded Hong\u00adni\u00adba Vil\u00adlage.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hongniba.com.cn\/cunge\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Red Mud Vil\u00adlage Song Web\u00adsite\u00bb&gt;<\/a>)<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nBut I soon dis\u00adcov\u00adered the rea\u00adson I did\u00adn\u2019t hear that song in the film: inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly enough, \u201cThe Smurfs\u2019 Song\u201d was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly com\u00adposed by a Chi\u00adnese artist! It\u2019s said that when the Smurfs car\u00adtoons were import\u00aded into Hong Kong, they com\u00admis\u00adsioned a Chi\u00adnese song\u00adwriter to cre\u00adate the theme song, fol\u00adlow\u00ading Hong Kong\u2019s cus\u00adtom\u00adary prac\u00adtice. No won\u00adder I ini\u00adtial\u00adly found the song so relat\u00adable! I sim\u00adply could\u00adn\u2019t remem\u00adber. I searched online for the ori\u00adgins of The Smurfs and dis\u00adcov\u00adered that the pop\u00adu\u00adlar Amer\u00adi\u00adcan ver\u00adsion debuted in 1981, while main\u00adland Chi\u00adna did\u00adn\u2019t intro\u00adduce it until 1986. In oth\u00ader words, I was near\u00ading high school grad\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion when I first encoun\u00adtered the Smurfs, an age when old\u00ader kids were fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00aded by youth lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture and Twi\u00adlight. Yet, I kept telling my daugh\u00adter, \u201cThis is the car\u00adtoon I watched as a kid!\u201d&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nSome\u00adtimes mem\u00ado\u00adry is real\u00adly unre\u00adli\u00adable. A series of mis\u00adun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00adings made me extreme\u00adly curi\u00adous about the ori\u00adgin of the Smurfs. I start\u00aded search\u00ading for rel\u00ade\u00advant infor\u00adma\u00adtion every\u00adwhere and was even lucky enough to get an Eng\u00adlish ver\u00adsion of the Smurfs com\u00adic book \u201cThe Mag\u00adic Flute\u201d.<br>\nSmurfs and the Mag\u00adic<br>\nFlute, which is like\u00adly the com\u00adic book sto\u00adry that first gave rise to the Smurfs. The orig\u00adi\u00adnal sto\u00adry was a French ver\u00adsion pub\u00adlished in Bel\u00adgium in 1958, called \u201cThe Six-Hole Flute\u201d. It is actu\u00adal\u00adly a very long sto\u00adry, a 64-page com\u00adic nov\u00adel, sim\u00adi\u00adlar in length and dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty to \u201cThe Adven\u00adtures of Tintin\u201d, but set in the medieval cas\u00adtle age when witch\u00adcraft was preva\u00adlent. The idea of the Smurfs orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly came from a slip of the tongue by Pee\u00adwee and his friends while on vaca\u00adtion. They thought it was fun\u00adny, so they used the word they acci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly said (French: schtroumpf; lat\u00ader trans\u00adlat\u00aded into Eng\u00adlish: smurf) to cre\u00adate a fun\u00adny lan\u00adguage, using the gram\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal rules unique to alpha\u00adbet\u00adic writ\u00ading: for exam\u00adple, smurf is used as a noun and a verb, to<br>\n\u201cSmurf\u201d and \u201csmurf\u00ading\u201d denote actions, while \u201csmurfy\u201d is an adjec\u00adtive. The most inter\u00adest\u00ading thing about \u201csmurf\u201d is that its mean\u00ading is not fixed and can be used to express any\u00adthing, depend\u00ading on the con\u00adtext and the empha\u00adsis of the pro\u00adnun\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion. All the elves are male (Smur\u00adfette was born many years lat\u00ader), and they all look the same on the sur\u00adface, with the excep\u00adtion of Papa Smurf, who looks a bit like a lit\u00adtle San\u00adta Claus. Recent\u00adly, with the release of the film, they\u2019ve re-edit\u00aded the series into a 16-vol\u00adume \u201cThe Smurfs Clas\u00adsic Comics Series.\u201d This new, more refined, small\u00ader-for\u00admat edi\u00adtion includes some of the most clas\u00adsic Smurf sto\u00adries.&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nIt\u2019s worth not\u00ading that while Euro\u00adpean-style comics are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar with chil\u00addren, they\u2019re not exclu\u00adsive\u00adly for them. Judg\u00ading by their con\u00adtent and engag\u00ading sto\u00adry\u00adtelling, they\u2019re essen\u00adtial\u00adly relax\u00ading read\u00ading mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal for the home, suit\u00adable for all ages. Like \u201cThe Adven\u00adtures of Tintin\u201d and \u201cLit\u00adtle Naughty Nico\u00adla,\u201d \u201cThe Smurfs\u201d is also suit\u00adable for adults who have a non\u00adjudg\u00admen\u00adtal view of comics. Some sto\u00adries, such as \u201cThe Gold Coins of Elf Vil\u00adlage,\u201d offer a degree of satire on the mate\u00adri\u00adal\u00adis\u00adtic world of adult\u00adhood. While more sta\u00adble read\u00aders can eas\u00adi\u00adly dis\u00admiss such crit\u00adi\u00adcisms (and chil\u00addren, nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly, are even less like\u00adly to take them seri\u00adous\u00adly), this also demon\u00adstrates the poten\u00adtial for diverse inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions of the Smurfs\u2019 sto\u00adry.&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nIn fact, peo\u00adple around the world share a uni\u00adver\u00adsal love for these strange lit\u00adtle elves. Every year, June 25th (Pey\u00adote\u2019s birth\u00adday) is des\u00adig\u00adnat\u00aded \u201cWorld Smurfs Day,\u201d and Smurf fans every\u00adwhere express their admi\u00adra\u00adtion in var\u00adi\u00adous ways. A book titled \u201cBlack Smurf\u201d was nev\u00ader pub\u00adlished in Eng\u00adlish because it might touch on sen\u00adsi\u00adtive top\u00adics of racial dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion.
