Imag\u00adine how to trans\u00adlate Du Fu\u2019s poem, \u201cStars hang low over the vast plain, the moon surges over the mighty riv\u00ader,\u201d into Eng\u00adlish. For\u00adget Eng\u00adlish, even Chi\u00adnese prose would be dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to per\u00adfect\u00adly reca\u00adpit\u00adu\u00adlate. Yet, this ardu\u00adous task must be under\u00adtak\u00aden, and indeed, there are those who fool\u00adish\u00adly rev\u00adel in it, find\u00ading its own cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading joy.<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nMiss Porter\u2019s \u201cPeter Rab\u00adbit\u2019s World\u201d is one of those texts that is both incred\u00adi\u00adbly beau\u00adti\u00adful and play\u00adful in Eng\u00adlish. Its writ\u00ading is ele\u00adgant and refined, its choice of words and sen\u00adtences often con\u00adceal\u00ading sub\u00adtle wit, and its under\u00adly\u00ading sense of irony and humor is per\u00adme\u00adat\u00aded with a sense of humor. Since her sto\u00adries are pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly intend\u00aded for chil\u00addren, the prose is sim\u00adple and flu\u00adent, the tone friend\u00adly and nat\u00adur\u00adal. Even when sub\u00adtle satire of world\u00adly mat\u00adters is sub\u00adtle, it\u2019s only meant to elic\u00adit a smile from the read\u00ader. Yet, they hold such a pro\u00adfound charm, like beau\u00adti\u00adful shells on the beach, invit\u00ading you to pick them up. You don\u2019t have to pos\u00adsess them, just to enjoy them and mar\u00advel at the won\u00adders of nature. Unable to keep this plea\u00adsure to your\u00adself, I\u2019d like to share with you some of the shells I found in \u201cPeter Rab\u00adbit\u2019s World.\u201d<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>About ani\u00admals and plants<\/strong><br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\n<strong>wood\u00admouse<\/strong>, is actu\u00adal\u00adly a type of vole, com\u00admon in West\u00adern Europe. They can live in woods, but are more com\u00admon\u00adly found under hedges near peo\u00adple\u2019s homes. In \u201cThe Tale of Lit\u00adtle Ben\u00adjamin Rab\u00adbit,\u201d she explains it as \u201cthe herb we call laven\u00adder,\u201d a rather dubi\u00adous state\u00adment. It\u2019s high\u00adly like\u00adly that Pot\u00adter read it from the pop\u00adu\u00adlar Amer\u00adi\u00adcan author Har\u00adris\u2019s fairy tale book, \u201cUncle Remus Tells Tales,\u201d which she illus\u00adtrat\u00aded between 1893 and 1896.<br>\n&nbsp;<br>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nThe sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic name of rab\u00adbit tobac\u00adco is Gnaphal\u00adi\u00adum<br>\nObtusi\u00adfoli\u00adum, which grows in the Mis\u00adsis\u00adsip\u00adpi Riv\u00ader basin in the Unit\u00aded States, is often used by Native Amer\u00adi\u00adcans as a herbal rem\u00ade\u00addy, and is said to have mirac\u00adu\u00adlous med\u00adi\u00adc\u00adi\u00adnal prop\u00ader\u00adties.
