All the sto\u00adries we tell are, in a sense, retellings of clas\u00adsics.
It\u2019s just that many of us haven\u2019t read so many sto\u00adries, so we always feel that this sto\u00adry is new and that sto\u00adry is new to us.
But in my opin\u00adion, all sto\u00adries are actu\u00adal\u00adly old sto\u00adries.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaox\u00adi\u00adang:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion to the deep\u00aden\u00ading of the sto\u00adry and the exten\u00adsion of the mean\u00ading that you just men\u00adtioned, I also par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly hope to see more diver\u00adsi\u00adty and rich\u00adness in visu\u00adal expres\u00adsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, in terms of folk tra\u00addi\u00adtions, ours are rich\u00ader than those of South Korea and Japan in terms of mate\u00adri\u00adals and appear\u00adance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when adapt\u00ading folk tra\u00addi\u00adtions, shouldn\u2019t our orig\u00adi\u00adnal pic\u00adture books also present a rich\u00ader look than those of our neigh\u00adbor\u00ading coun\u00adtries?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it also comes down to fate. After inter\u00adview\u00ading many cre\u00adators, I feel that the cre\u00adative process real\u00adly depends on a sense of des\u00adtiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

For exam\u00adple, Mr. Nao\u00adki Mat\u00adsui, the \u201cFather of Pic\u00adture Books\u201d in Japan, is not only an excel\u00adlent pub\u00adlish\u00ader, but also a very per\u00adcep\u00adtive edi\u00adtor. He often gives com\u00adplete\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent sug\u00adges\u00adtions to dif\u00adfer\u00adent cre\u00adators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For exam\u00adple, when he met Teacher Cai Gao, she actu\u00adal\u00adly want\u00aded to draw some sto\u00adries about con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary chil\u00addren\u2019s lives, but Mat\u00adsui Nao told her that she should try to cre\u00adate more tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal sto\u00adries and use tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal tech\u00adniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nao\u00adki Mat\u00adsui has a spe\u00adcial sen\u00adsi\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and knows what each cre\u00adator is best at and what kind of sto\u00adries they are best suit\u00aded to telling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to talk to Teacher Cai Gao, you will find that she is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly inter\u00adest\u00aded in sto\u00adries like \u201cBao\u2019er\u201d and the themes in \u201cStrange Sto\u00adries from a Chi\u00adnese Stu\u00addio\u201d that are a bit dark, elves, and ghosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has her own under\u00adstand\u00ading and expres\u00adsion of the kind of \u201cdark\u00adness with light\u201d, mys\u00adte\u00adri\u00adous, and even scary things. The heavy writ\u00ading of human nature is actu\u00adal\u00adly a bit of mag\u00adi\u00adcal real\u00adism, right? She is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly suit\u00adable for telling this kind of sto\u00adry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I think we need this kind of \u201coppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty\u201d \u2014 to allow every cre\u00adator to freely express what he or she wants to say most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each per\u00adson may be just a \u201csmall group of peo\u00adple\u201d who are good at express\u00ading a cer\u00adtain per\u00adspec\u00adtive, a theme, or a cer\u00adtain emo\u00adtion. But as long as these \u201csmall groups of peo\u00adple\u201d can express them\u00adselves freely, our orig\u00adi\u00adnal pic\u00adture books can form a very diverse ecosys\u00adtem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take, for exam\u00adple, the book \u201cBraids\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, the edi\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal team was dis\u00adcussing whether to include it or not. Many peo\u00adple hes\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded, say\u00ading that the book was \u201cnot inter\u00adest\u00ading enough for chil\u00addren\u201d and \u201cthe col\u00ador tone was gray\u201d, etc. But I insist\u00aded on includ\u00ading it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? Because this book tells a dif\u00adfer\u00adent sto\u00adry of child\u00adhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of our chil\u00addren\u2019s books want to tell chil\u00addren how won\u00adder\u00adful child\u00adhood is, but the real child\u00adhood is not always won\u00adder\u00adful. Some chil\u00addren\u2019s child\u00adhood is actu\u00adal\u00adly very dif\u00adfi\u00adcult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know Hei\u00admi is from Chaoshan, and my moth\u00ader is also from Chaoshan. Every time she recalls her child\u00adhood, she can\u2019t help cry\u00ading. Espe\u00adcial\u00adly for women, the pres\u00adsure they endure in the Chaoshan cul\u00adtur\u00adal envi\u00adron\u00adment is some\u00adthing that many peo\u00adple can\u00adnot under\u00adstand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t force them to \u201csing about their child\u00adhood\u201d, that\u2019s mean\u00ading\u00adless. Of course, you can\u2019t ask them to describe their child\u00adhood as par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly hor\u00adri\u00adble, that\u2019s not nec\u00ades\u00adsary either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Braids strikes a bal\u00adance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It express\u00ades the pain and strug\u00adgle of child\u00adhood, but also finds a way out in the sto\u00adry, which is the pow\u00ader of fan\u00adta\u00adsy, and final\u00adly there is a rec\u00adon\u00adcil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion with grand\u00adma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this sto\u00adry has a strong heal\u00ading pow\u00ader. It may not be a \u201cchild\u00adhood sto\u00adry\u201d in the main\u00adstream sense, but it may res\u00adonate with many peo\u00adple, and make them feel com\u00adfort\u00aded and even relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, I have my own pref\u00ader\u00adences. But what I hope more is that when our choic\u00ades are diverse enough, we will find that Chi\u00adna has always had diverse cre\u00adations. It\u2019s just that some aspects are not seen or rec\u00adog\u00adnized in the main\u00adstream con\u00adtext.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I also choose some sto\u00adries with a bit of \u201cdark\u00adness\u201d, such as books like \u201cHap\u00adpy Egg Lay\u00ading\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaox\u00adi\u00adang:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We just talked about the adap\u00adta\u00adtion of tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal folk sto\u00adries. I would also like to talk to you about the cre\u00adation of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s my per\u00adson\u00adal bias or I haven\u2019t read enough, but I\u2019ve always felt that there don\u2019t seem to be many expres\u00adsions of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary life in orig\u00adi\u00adnal Chi\u00adnese pic\u00adture books, espe\u00adcial\u00adly those that make my eyes light up and sur\u00adprise me, which don\u2019t seem to be com\u00admon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s dif\u00adfi\u00adcult. Of course it\u2019s dif\u00adfi\u00adcult, do you know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the book I list\u00aded in the next arti\u00adcle that best express\u00ades this theme, \u201cWinged Boy\u201d, right? It is a very good book, but it is not easy to keep it for a long time and con\u00adtin\u00adue to be read by every\u00adone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also true for \u201cOnly Child\u201d. If you want to main\u00adtain an objec\u00adtive and truth\u00adful expres\u00adsion, there will always be some peo\u00adple who think: Is this not suit\u00adable for chil\u00addren? Some peo\u00adple also think it is not \u201cchild-friend\u00adly\u201d enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, there have been many debates about the \u201cchild\u00adish\u00adness\u201d of \u201cWinged Boy\u201d. But some\u00adtimes, if you real\u00adly want to express it real\u00adis\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly, it can\u2019t be too fake, right? You can\u2019t just express some good wish\u00ades, but you need to present it objec\u00adtive\u00adly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sto\u00adry of \u201cWinged Boy\u201d is about a child from a migrant work\u00ader fam\u00adi\u00adly in a big city. No mat\u00adter what he does in school, he will be exclud\u00aded by oth\u00ader chil\u00addren because he always smells like cook\u00ading fumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see, no mat\u00adter how he behaves, oth\u00aders always think that he is not a \u201creal city kid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his moth\u00ader had to let him help in the store while watch\u00ading him do his home\u00adwork. Those who came to work always want\u00aded to talk to the child. In fact, his moth\u00ader was not sim\u00adply wor\u00adried that he would be dis\u00adtract\u00aded, but she did\u00adn\u2019t want him to have too much con\u00adtact with these peo\u00adple. These sub\u00adtle points were all observed by the cre\u00adator, Teacher Liu Xun, because her daugh\u00adter was the child\u2019s class\u00admate. In the process of help\u00ading each oth\u00ader, they felt the very warm human\u00adi\u00adty and also real\u00adized the side that was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly dig\u00adni\u00adfied and wor\u00adthy of respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remem\u00adber that when I read \u201cOnly Child\u201d, it real\u00adly had a great impact on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That seemed to be the first time I read \u201cmy own sto\u00adry\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I am of the same gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion as the author, I feel that what she is talk\u00ading about is my own grow\u00ading up expe\u00adri\u00adence, and this sense of sub\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion is par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I also noticed that there seem to be very few pic\u00adture books that chil\u00addren read today that can tru\u00adly reflect their cur\u00adrent lives. Do you think there will be more and more such works in orig\u00adi\u00adnal pic\u00adture books in the future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the expres\u00adsion of real child\u00adhood life\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it just shows some\u00adthing par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly beau\u00adti\u00adful, is this kind of work still worth pub\u00adlish\u00ading?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take, for exam\u00adple, \u201cLast Stop on Mar\u00adket Street\u201d. Were you moved after read\u00ading it? Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some books tell sto\u00adries of loss, which are equal\u00adly mov\u00ading and embody the car\u00ading part of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if the work lacks real aware\u00adness of the prob\u00adlem, real obser\u00adva\u00adtions, and valu\u00adable respons\u00ades, then such work will be dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to be con\u00advinc\u00ading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I often say that real\u00adis\u00adtic works often have to \u201craise ques\u00adtions\u201d, oth\u00ader\u00adwise they become preachy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I talked about juve\u00adnile nov\u00adels before, I often said that real juve\u00adnile nov\u00adels are often \u201cprob\u00adlem juve\u00adnile nov\u00adels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a YA nov\u00adel was just about every\u00adthing being won\u00adder\u00adful, then there would be lit\u00adtle need for it to exist, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rea\u00adson we write a fic\u00adtion\u00adal sto\u00adry is because there are dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties, set\u00adbacks or short\u00adcom\u00adings in real\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to ask ques\u00adtions in your work and then pro\u00advide some kind of real and mean\u00ading\u00adful response, rather than sim\u00adply paint\u00ading a pie in the sky and mak\u00ading the hope look pret\u00adty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cov\u00ader of \u201cThe Tilt\u00aded Sky\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m very hap\u00adpy that a Chi\u00adnese juve\u00adnile nov\u00adel was recent\u00adly trans\u00adlat\u00aded and pub\u00adlished in Eng\u00adlish. The book is called \u201cThe Tilt\u00aded Sky\u201d. The nov\u00adel tells the sto\u00adry of a child from a sin\u00adgle-par\u00adent fam\u00adi\u00adly and his father, and the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the two is very tense. The child has to change guardians sev\u00ader\u00adal times\u2026 It\u2019s a very bro\u00adken growth sto\u00adry. But when you read to the end, you will feel some\u00adthing real\u00adly warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaox\u00adi\u00adang:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you think of the cur\u00adrent phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon of \u201cfamous works adapt\u00aded into pic\u00adture books\u201d? To be hon\u00adest, I have read a lot of such pic\u00adture books, but there are almost no exam\u00adples that I think are suc\u00adcess\u00adful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, after the pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion of my book \u201cOrig\u00adi\u00adnal Pic\u00adture Books: Select\u00aded Read\u00adings and High\u00adlights\u201d, some friends in the indus\u00adtry also expressed their opin\u00adions very tact\u00adful\u00adly, say\u00ading that if they were to write it, they would choose books from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of \u201cvisu\u00adal pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adty\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see, dif\u00adfer\u00adent peo\u00adple have dif\u00adfer\u00adent per\u00adspec\u00adtives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for me, I don\u2019t con\u00adsid\u00ader \u201cbeau\u00adti\u00adful illus\u00adtra\u00adtions\u201d as the pri\u00adma\u00adry cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon for choos\u00ading a book. Of course, good illus\u00adtra\u00adtions are def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly a plus, but for me, the most impor\u00adtant cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon is: the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the text and the pic\u00adtures. Is there a \u201ccor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00addence\u201d between the text and the pic\u00adtures? Is there \u201cprogress\u201d? Do they cre\u00adate a \u201cthird sto\u00adry\u201d togeth\u00ader? This is what I val\u00adue. Most of the books I choose meet this cri\u00adte\u00adri\u00adon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for some peo\u00adple\u2019s choice of books, they may focus more on \u201cfamous authors\u201d and \u201cfamous works\u201d, which is anoth\u00ader sys\u00adtem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But why do you think this adap\u00adta\u00adtion is not very suc\u00adcess\u00adful? It is prob\u00ada\u00adbly because you judge it using the \u201clan\u00adguage of pic\u00adture books\u201d. You care about the close\u00adness between the text and the pic\u00adtures, not whether the pic\u00adtures are sim\u00adply \u201cicing on the cake\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, some\u00adtimes we also need some beau\u00adti\u00adful illus\u00adtra\u00adtions to appre\u00adci\u00adate clas\u00adsics, and I like this kind of books, but that may not be the def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of a pic\u00adture book, it is more like an illus\u00adtrat\u00aded ver\u00adsion of a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a pic\u00adture book, I par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly empha\u00adsize the close coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion between text and pic\u00adtures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For exam\u00adple, the sto\u00adry \u201cShui Ai\u201d select\u00aded in my book is adapt\u00aded from Peng Xue\u00adjun\u2019s nov\u00adel \u201cWaist Gate\u201d. How\u00adev\u00ader, this adap\u00adta\u00adtion was not ini\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded by the author of the nov\u00adel at all, but two illus\u00adtra\u00adtors took the ini\u00adtia\u00adtive to find the author and said that they par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly liked this sto\u00adry and want\u00aded to turn it into a pic\u00adture book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also drew sketch\u00ades, pre\u00adpared drafts, and then sought the author\u2019s approval. So this is actu\u00adal\u00adly a \u201cvisu\u00adal cre\u00adator-led\u201d adap\u00adta\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that book review, I also specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly men\u00adtioned the dif\u00adfer\u00adence between pic\u00adture books and nov\u00adel texts\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal descrip\u00adtions and process\u00ades in the nov\u00adel, but these are not suit\u00adable for pic\u00adture books, so they are basi\u00adcal\u00adly delet\u00aded, leav\u00ading only a very con\u00adcise nar\u00adra\u00adtive, cou\u00adpled with con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adous visu\u00adal nar\u00adra\u00adtive. The two are matched per\u00adfect\u00adly, so it becomes a real pic\u00adture book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this is a \u201cspe\u00adcial case\u201d. It was the illus\u00adtra\u00adtor\u2019s efforts that pushed the adap\u00adta\u00adtion for\u00adward and made it a \u201cnew work\u201d, just like an adapt\u00aded movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anoth\u00ader exam\u00adple is \u201cSpar\u00adrow\u201d by Mei Zihan, illus\u00adtrat\u00aded by Man Tao. I think this is Mei\u2019s most suc\u00adcess\u00adful pic\u00adture book so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some\u00adtimes, edi\u00adtors even tell cre\u00adators, \u201cJust draw like oth\u00aders do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This kind of edit\u00ading may very like\u00adly ruin a promis\u00ading cre\u00adator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The worst thing for a cre\u00adator is to imi\u00adtate oth\u00aders from the begin\u00adning. Once you give peo\u00adple this impres\u00adsion \u2014 your cre\u00adation seems to be imi\u00adtat\u00ading some\u00adone\u2019s style \u2014 maybe you can still sell one or two books with this style, but you will no longer be your\u00adself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
