 Recent\u00adly (this is a record of my 2020 lec\u00adture tour), while tour\u00ading with this book, I met many read\u00aders, and their feed\u00adback gave me a lot of encour\u00adage\u00adment and inspi\u00adra\u00adtion. I\u2019d like to share it below:<\/p>\n

So far, the only book I know of is \u201cLi Na: Be a Bet\u00adter You\u201d (the new edi\u00adtion is renamed:Ten\u00adnis Dream\u2014The Sto\u00adry of Cham\u00adpi\u00adon Li Na<\/strong><\/span>The most inter\u00adest\u00ading use is by a father in Wuhan who want\u00aded to get his daugh\u00adter to play bas\u00adket\u00adball. They read it togeth\u00ader at least once a day (main\u00adly the father read\u00ading it to his daugh\u00adter, of course), and appar\u00adent\u00adly it real\u00adly res\u00adonat\u00aded with them, mak\u00ading their bas\u00adket\u00adball games much more excit\u00ading\u2026<\/p>\n

Anoth\u00ader lit\u00adtle sto\u00adry a father in Shen\u00adzhen told me was about his eldest daugh\u00adter. She was\u00adn\u2019t doing well before her high school entrance exam this year and lacked con\u00adfi\u00addence. Unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly, after read\u00ading this book, she was great\u00adly encour\u00adaged and vowed to \u201cbecome a bet\u00adter ver\u00adsion of her\u00adself.\u201d Lat\u00ader, through hard work, she got into her dream high school. I thought it sound\u00aded a bit like a made-up sto\u00adry, but the father told it so sin\u00adcere\u00adly that I chose to believe him. ^_^<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s even more inter\u00adest\u00ading is the inter\u00adac\u00adtion with read\u00aders of all ages\u2014<\/p>\n

Lit\u00adtle Lamb, a young read\u00ader from Guangzhou: Why are there cir\u00adcles drawn all over this book?<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: The book was orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly titled \u201cDream Come True,\u201d and the cir\u00adcles through\u00adout might be relat\u00aded to that, rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00ading the process of ful\u00adfill\u00ading dreams. Also, ten\u00adnis balls are round, bicy\u00adcle wheels are round, many things are round\u2026 There\u2019s a book called \u201cThe Book of Cir\u00adcles,\u201d where the author sug\u00adgests that every\u00adthing in the world can be expressed using cir\u00adcles.<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: That\u2019s one of the advan\u00adtages of cir\u00adcles. Cir\u00adcles can roll and jump. The ball in front might jump and roll all the way to the back. Of course, this book was illus\u00adtrat\u00aded by Yu Rong, so we\u2019ll have to ask her why she designed it this way.<\/p>\n

Guangzhou read\u00ader Lit\u00adtle Lamb: Why is the child in the pho\u00adto on the (back end\u00adpa\u00adper) side so small on one side and so big on the oth\u00ader, and why is there anoth\u00ader pho\u00adto of him hold\u00ading a tro\u00adphy?<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: The fol\u00adlow\u00ading pho\u00adtos are from dif\u00adfer\u00adent peri\u00adods of Li Na\u2019s life. You can see her growth process. Even though she even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly won the tro\u00adphy in a leg\u00adendary way and became a hero, she was just like any oth\u00ader ordi\u00adnary per\u00adson when she was a child. And was\u00adn\u2019t she chub\u00adby in the child\u00adhood pho\u00adtos? She had a bit of baby fat, which is why her father would take her for morn\u00ading runs.<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: Haha, that used to be quite com\u00admon in Wuhan dur\u00ading the swel\u00adter\u00ading sum\u00admers. Sum\u00admers there were so hot that some lit\u00adtle boys would get so sweaty from play\u00ading that they\u2019d sim\u00adply take off their clothes and con\u00adtin\u00adue play\u00ading shirt\u00adless. It\u2019s not so com\u00admon any\u00admore.<\/p>\n

Xia Tian, a young read\u00ader from Tang\u00adshan: Why did you write this book?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: This is a ques\u00adtion that\u2019s both sim\u00adple and dif\u00adfi\u00adcult. Sim\u00adply put, this is a book I was com\u00admis\u00adsioned to write. Miao Hui, the edi\u00adtor of Li Na\u2019s auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy, *Play\u00ading Alone*, want\u00aded me to write the text for this illus\u00adtrat\u00aded biog\u00adra\u00adphy. I spent over two months research\u00ading it before final\u00adly decid\u00ading to take on the task. The dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty lies here: why did I ulti\u00admate\u00adly decide to write this sto\u00adry? Look\u00ading back, there are two rea\u00adsons: First, from Li Na\u2019s life sto\u00adry, I saw not only a leg\u00adendary ath\u00adlete but also an ordi\u00adnary per\u00adson. Her sto\u00adry with her father remind\u00aded me of my daugh\u00adter and me, and I want\u00aded to write from that per\u00adspec\u00adtive. The oth\u00ader rea\u00adson is that I believe writ\u00ading is a form of expres\u00adsion, an explo\u00adration, not about giv\u00ading oth\u00aders answers. Although I\u2019m almost fifty, there are still many things I don\u2019t under\u00adstand, so I need to keep explor\u00ading.<\/p>\n

The part of Li Na and her father\u2019s sto\u00adry that makes me most uncer\u00adtain is: is it real\u00adly a good thing to instill the father\u2019s dream in a child at such a young age and then have them strive to achieve that dream? Return\u00ading to the sto\u00adry, we can expe\u00adri\u00adence it for our\u00adselves. Li Na is now a moth\u00ader of two, and she prefers to give her chil\u00addren more free\u00addom of choice in their upbring\u00ading. But when I vis\u00adit\u00aded her, I asked her this ques\u00adtion: If your father had\u00adn\u2019t raised you that way, would you have achieved what you have today? Li Na thought for a moment and answered very firm\u00adly: No.<\/p>\n

In the process of writ\u00ading this book, dis\u00adcussing how to present the sto\u00adry with the edi\u00adtors and illus\u00adtra\u00adtors, and engag\u00ading with an increas\u00ading num\u00adber of read\u00aders, we dis\u00adcov\u00adered more and more ques\u00adtions than sim\u00adple answers. The impor\u00adtant thing is that through this shared ques\u00adtion\u00ading and explo\u00adration, we have the poten\u00adtial to become bet\u00adter ver\u00adsions of our\u00adselves. This is per\u00adhaps one of the great\u00adest joys of writ\u00ading.<\/p>\n

A moth\u00ader from Taiyuan asked: Why isn\u2019t Li Na\u2019s moth\u00ader men\u00adtioned in this book? Is it because the author is a father\u2026?<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: I am tru\u00adly sor\u00adry for this! Please allow me to bow and apol\u00ado\u00adgize to all the moth\u00aders here! Li Na\u2019s growth is cer\u00adtain\u00adly insep\u00ada\u00adra\u00adble from her moth\u00ader, but in this sto\u00adry, I focused on how her rela\u00adtion\u00adship with her father affect\u00aded her growth. As a pic\u00adture book, the space was sim\u00adply too lim\u00adit\u00aded, so in the end, I had to leave the moth\u00ader out.<\/p>\n

In the sev\u00ader\u00adal draft ver\u00adsions I will be show\u00ading you (soon), you\u2019ll find that the sto\u00adry orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly includ\u00aded a moth\u00ader. She pro\u00advid\u00aded sup\u00adport dur\u00ading Li Na\u2019s morn\u00ading runs, and lat\u00ader, when Li Na was train\u00ading at board\u00ading school, she often spent time with her daugh\u00adter after get off work. The fam\u00adi\u00adly of three enjoyed hap\u00adpy meals togeth\u00ader on week\u00adends\u2026 How\u00adev\u00ader, after sev\u00ader\u00adal revi\u00adsions, we found that these became extra\u00adne\u00adous details out\u00adside the main sto\u00adry. Explain\u00ading them would be too ver\u00adbose and unclear, but doing so would require adding extra space. Those who have read Li Na\u2019s auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy may know that her rela\u00adtion\u00adship with her moth\u00ader was quite com\u00adplex and sub\u00adtle. Per\u00adhaps a female writer will rewrite Li Na\u2019s child\u00adhood sto\u00adry in the future and explain this part more clear\u00adly. But in this book, we ulti\u00admate\u00adly had to reluc\u00adtant\u00adly aban\u00addon this effort.<\/p>\n

Anoth\u00ader sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant omis\u00adsion in this book is of Li Na\u2019s hus\u00adband, Jiang Shan, who also made a tremen\u00addous con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtion to Li Na\u2019s rise to Grand Slam cham\u00adpi\u00adon sta\u00adtus. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, due to space lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions, he has to be left out here. How\u00adev\u00ader, you might be able to spot him in the stands dur\u00ading the match\u00ades :)<\/p>\n

I won\u00addered if this kind of bio\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal pic\u00adture book would be even bet\u00adter if the entire book was pre\u00adsent\u00aded with pho\u00adtos?\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: Thank you for agree\u00ading with our idea of includ\u00ading a pho\u00adto at the end! We actu\u00adal\u00adly searched for that pho\u00adto for a long time. Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, we want\u00aded to find a pic\u00adture of Li Na with the ris\u00ading nation\u00adal flag, but unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, we could\u00adn\u2019t find a suit\u00adable one (one that both fit the sto\u00adry\u2019s expres\u00adsive\u00adness and was poten\u00adtial\u00adly copy\u00adrightable). Per\u00adhaps it was pre\u00adcise\u00adly because the pho\u00adto \u201csud\u00adden\u00adly\u201d appeared at the end that it restored a cer\u00adtain sense of real\u00adi\u00adty, remind\u00ading the read\u00ader that this was not a fic\u00adtion\u00adal sto\u00adry, thus cre\u00adat\u00ading a pow\u00ader\u00adful effect. Why could\u00adn\u2019t we present it entire\u00adly with pho\u00adtographs? Per\u00adhaps doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtaries could, but pic\u00adture books are unlike\u00adly to be so. Glob\u00adal\u00adly, pic\u00adture books that tell a sto\u00adry entire\u00adly with pho\u00adtographs and achieve suc\u00adcess are very rare. More\u00adover, we are going back to Li Na\u2019s child\u00adhood and ado\u00adles\u00adcence. Recre\u00adat\u00ading the past through illus\u00adtra\u00adtion car\u00adries more of the nar\u00adra\u00adtor\u2019s emo\u00adtions, feel\u00adings, and opin\u00adions. For exam\u00adple, if the nar\u00adra\u00adtor choos\u00ades to look back with joy and pos\u00adi\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty, a suc\u00adcess\u00adful image needs to leave the read\u00ader with that impres\u00adsion.<\/p>\n

For exam\u00adple, when Li Na played ten\u00adnis at the Zhong\u00adshan Park train\u00ading court as a child, in the late 1980s and ear\u00adly 1990s, con\u00addi\u00adtions were quite harsh. Chil\u00addren played on grav\u00adel courts, and every day they had to draw lines with white pow\u00adder and always have mer\u00adcurochrome and gen\u00adtian vio\u00adlet on hand. They often cut their legs and feet, espe\u00adcial\u00adly their knees. They would rinse the wounds under run\u00adning water, apply med\u00adi\u00adcine, and then con\u00adtin\u00adue train\u00ading. If viewed through a ful\u00adly real\u00adis\u00adtic col\u00ador pho\u00adto\u00adgraph today, it might seem \u201chor\u00adri\u00adble,\u201d but in a paint\u00ading, it could very well cap\u00adture the feel\u00ading Yu Rong depicts. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, the child\u00adhood events described in the sto\u00adry cer\u00adtain\u00adly weren\u2019t pho\u00adtographed at the time, and hav\u00ading actors pose for pho\u00adtos now is clear\u00adly less effec\u00adtive than depict\u00ading the sto\u00adry in a paint\u00ading.<\/p>\n

A\u2011Jia: Haha, you\u2019ve hit the nail on the head regard\u00ading the dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties of non-fic\u00adtion pic\u00adture books! I bet Yu Rong put even more effort into illus\u00adtrat\u00ading *Li Na* than she did into *I Am Mulan*, because this book pre\u00adsent\u00aded a greater chal\u00adlenge for her! As you said, the Li Na in the book is dif\u00adfer\u00adent from the \u201cLi Na in your mem\u00ado\u00adry,\u201d which is the biggest chal\u00adlenge in por\u00adtray\u00ading a liv\u00ading per\u00adson (espe\u00adcial\u00adly a young ath\u00adlete like Li Na), because every\u00adone\u2019s image of them is dif\u00adfer\u00adent! Fic\u00adtion\u00adal char\u00adac\u00adters, on the oth\u00ader hand, exist only in the world of imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, since no one has ever seen them, and the illus\u00adtra\u00adtor has much more free\u00addom in inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion; what\u00adev\u00ader the illus\u00adtra\u00adtor does, it has its own log\u00adic. Yu Rong faced this prob\u00adlem when she illus\u00adtrat\u00aded Li Na; no mat\u00adter how she drew it, there would always be read\u00aders who were dis\u00adsat\u00adis\u00adfied. Inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, when Li Na read the book to her chil\u00addren, the two lit\u00adtle ones quite liked the 15-year-old Li Na in the book. They were curi\u00adous, \u201cWhy was Mom\u2019s hair green back then?\u201d\u201c<\/p>\n

Fur\u00adther\u00admore, you can notice many small details hid\u00adden in the line draw\u00adings of this book. Unlike fic\u00adtion\u00adal sto\u00adries, these real\u00adis\u00adtic details are quite metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly researched. For exam\u00adple, what was Wuhan like in the 1980s? The appear\u00adance of Wuhan\u2019s bridges and fer\u00adries. There\u2019s a small detail, like the dor\u00admi\u00adto\u00adry build\u00ading with wreaths placed below it, which is actu\u00adal\u00adly a very care\u00adful recre\u00adation of the build\u00ading I lived in when I was a child (from ele\u00admen\u00adtary to junior high school)\u2026 These details could\u00adn\u2019t be arbi\u00adtrary because this is a real\u00adis\u00adtic sto\u00adry. How\u00adev\u00ader, the artist added her own inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion in some places. For exam\u00adple, to remind the read\u00ader that Li Na and her father\u2019s morn\u00ading run was in Wuhan, there\u2019s a Yel\u00adlow Crane Tow\u00ader in the back\u00adground, and she drew an immor\u00adtal rid\u00ading a crane, which even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly flew to the Eif\u00adfel Tow\u00ader; includ\u00ading the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between the Wuhan Yangtze Riv\u00ader Bridge and the Eif\u00adfel Tow\u00ader, and the recre\u00adation of the Fer\u00adris wheel in the amuse\u00adment park from my child\u00adhood\u2026 These are all sym\u00adbol\u00adic.<\/p>\n

As a book intro\u00adduc\u00ading ten\u00adnis cul\u00adture, the last few dou\u00adble-page spreads metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly present a ten\u00adnis match court, with every detail care\u00adful\u00adly researched. For the artist, the most ardu\u00adous task was actu\u00adal\u00adly paint\u00ading the spec\u00adta\u00adtors at the side\u00adlines. We also earnest\u00adly request\u00aded Yu Rong to painstak\u00ading\u00adly depict those spec\u00adta\u00adtors to make the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions more believ\u00adable and allow read\u00aders to bet\u00adter expe\u00adri\u00adence the atmos\u00adphere of the match. Frankly, this was incred\u00adi\u00adbly time-con\u00adsum\u00ading and labo\u00adri\u00adous work, requir\u00ading metic\u00adu\u00adlous atten\u00adtion to detail and avoid\u00ading mis\u00adtakes. For exam\u00adple, could the nation\u00adal flag be unfurled, and how should it be unfurled? When Yu Rong became tired, she added some amus\u00ading lit\u00adtle details, includ\u00ading an exag\u00adger\u00adat\u00aded por\u00adtray\u00adal of A\u2011Jia and the edi\u00adtor\u2026 Paint\u00ading these details prob\u00ada\u00adbly demand\u00aded even more com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive skill from the artist than paint\u00ading the details in *I Am Mulan*.<\/p>\n
