\nThe Lantern Fes\u00adti\u00adval in Bei\u00adjing is very live\u00adly. Last year a build\u00ading burned down, and this year it snowed.

\nTrans\u00adporta\u00adtion in Bei\u00adjing can be a bit incon\u00adve\u00adnient when it snows: the roads are too slip\u00adpery for bik\u00ading, the bus\u00ades are too slow, the sub\u00adways are too crowd\u00aded, and taxis are hard to come by. But for those used to walk\u00ading to work, it\u2019s not a prob\u00adlem, and the snowy scenery along the way is a delight to the eyes and a pleas\u00adant expe\u00adri\u00adence.

\nI walked about 5 kilo\u00adme\u00adters from my home to Hong\u00adni\u00adba, a per\u00adfect walk, nei\u00adther too far nor too close. Pass\u00ading by Yuan Dadu City Wall Park, the scenery changes with each sea\u00adson. The park\u2019s most beau\u00adti\u00adful sea\u00adson is prob\u00ada\u00adbly when the cher\u00adry blos\u00adsoms are in full bloom, the petals scat\u00adter\u00ading in the breeze. But I still love it best when it snows. I hike ear\u00adly, when morn\u00ading exer\u00adcis\u00aders are scarce and the ground is clean and crisp. Even the hous\u00ades and bridges, which usu\u00adal\u00adly seem a bit tacky, appear tran\u00adquil and solemn.

\nI remem\u00adber as a child, I was delight\u00aded to read the lines \u201cThe win\u00addow holds the thou\u00adsand-year-old snow of the West\u00adern Hills; the door is moored with ships from the East\u00adern Wu.\u201d I did\u00adn\u2019t quite under\u00adstand what they were say\u00ading (and hon\u00adest\u00adly, I still don\u2019t quite under\u00adstand them now, haha), but I loved them just read\u00ading them aloud. I\u2019ve always had a mem\u00ado\u00adry of boats cov\u00adered in snow, so see\u00ading that scene brings those lines back to mind. Du Fu might not have meant that, but it\u2019s okay to let that imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion run wild. :)

\nAs we approached our des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion, the sky grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly bright\u00adened. Unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly, the snow made the roast duck restau\u00adrant look a bit unique:)
