\nA few years ago, while col\u00adlect\u00ading Calde\u00adcott Medal-win\u00adning pic\u00adture books, I col\u00adlect\u00aded \u201cA Clear Day.\u201d At the time, I sim\u00adply thought this folk\u00adtale illus\u00adtrat\u00aded with oil paint\u00adings was love\u00adly, but I could\u00adn\u2019t say I was par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly fond of it. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, the book and its cre\u00adator, Noni Hoggen, were rarely men\u00adtioned in the ref\u00ader\u00adence books I had on pic\u00adture book appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion and research, so I put it aside after read\u00ading it. Thanks to the invi\u00adta\u00adtion from the pub\u00adlish\u00ader\u2019s edi\u00adtor, I had the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to reread it care\u00adful\u00adly while trans\u00adlat\u00ading it. Reread\u00ading it again and again from a dif\u00adfer\u00adent per\u00adspec\u00adtive, and shar\u00ading it with my chil\u00addren, I grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly began to appre\u00adci\u00adate its unique charm.

\nThis is a pic\u00adture book that\u2019s per\u00adfect for read\u00ading aloud, or rather, it\u2019s one that needs to be read aloud to appre\u00adci\u00adate its charm. And the more you read it with your child, the more enjoy\u00adable it becomes. Why? The sto\u00adry\u00adline is sim\u00adple: A fox drinks milk and has his tail chopped off by an angry old woman. To get his tail back, the fox is forced to engage in a series of trades, each requir\u00ading a new con\u00addi\u00adtion, a chain of events that builds up into a long sequence. \nThe orig\u00adi\u00adnal Eng\u00adlish text of this book can indeed achieve such an effect, espe\u00adcial\u00adly because it suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly chal\u00adlenges the lim\u00adits of gram\u00admar, stick\u00ading a series of phras\u00ades togeth\u00ader, using very eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal words, but the mean\u00ading is very clear, and even three or five-year-old chil\u00addren can under\u00adstand it imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly.
