\nIn fact, as ear\u00adly as the 1960s, Japan\u00adese pub\u00adlish\u00ader Nao Mat\u00adsui was pon\u00adder\u00ading this very ques\u00adtion. In 1963, while vis\u00adit\u00ading the Chil\u00addren\u2019s Library in Ams\u00adter\u00addam, Nether\u00adlands, Mr. Mat\u00adsui Naoshi came across the new\u00adly pub\u00adlished \u201cMiffy the Bun\u00adny\u201d series by Dick Bruna. He exclaimed, \u201cThe kind of book I\u2019ve always dreamed of has actu\u00adal\u00adly been cre\u00adat\u00aded!\u201d He then select\u00aded eight of the books for pub\u00adli\u00adca\u00adtion in Japan, nam\u00ading them \u201cChil\u00addren\u2019s First Books.\u201d Mat\u00adsui Naoshi proved to be a for\u00admi\u00adda\u00adble fig\u00adure. Over the past half cen\u00adtu\u00adry, Dick Bruna\u2019s \u201cMiffy and Her Friends\u201d series, span\u00adning over 100 titles, has become a world\u00adwide favorite for infants and tod\u00addlers. As a unique work of art and design, it has also been admired and col\u00adlect\u00aded by adult read\u00aders. For Japan\u00adese read\u00aders, \u201cMiffy\u201d holds a unique sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance, serv\u00ading as a mod\u00adel for edi\u00adtors and chil\u00addren\u2019s illus\u00adtra\u00adtors. Through a gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion\u2019s efforts, Japan has its own unique \u201cchil\u00addren\u2019s first book.\u201d

\nThe new\u00adly released Chi\u00adnese edi\u00adtion of the \u201cMiffy\u201d series fea\u00adtures ten pic\u00adture books, all fea\u00adtur\u00ading the bun\u00adny Miffy. The books span the 1960s to the 1990s, encom\u00adpass\u00ading rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive works from each peri\u00adod of the Dutch illus\u00adtra\u00adtor Dick Bruna\u2019s career. The sto\u00adries depict Miffy\u2019s dai\u00adly life, such as trips to the beach, snow, the zoo, and the art gallery. They also fea\u00adture spe\u00adcial events like her birth\u00adday, a hos\u00adpi\u00adtal stay, and the loss of her ted\u00addy bear. They also explore inter\u00adac\u00adtions with friends and fam\u00adi\u00adly, such as vis\u00adit\u00ading friends and grand\u00adpar\u00adents, and her sweet dreams. These sto\u00adries are close\u00adly relat\u00aded to chil\u00addren\u2019s lives. The sto\u00adries are pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly suit\u00adable for chil\u00addren aged 2\u20136. \nDick Bruna and Miffy

\nDick Bruna was born on August 23, 1927, in Utrecht, a small city in cen\u00adtral Nether\u00adlands. His father, a major pub\u00adlish\u00ader, want\u00aded him to fol\u00adlow in his foot\u00adsteps and sent him to Lon\u00addon and Paris to study pub\u00adlish\u00ading. How\u00adev\u00ader, he became fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00aded with art design. To make a liv\u00ading, he began design\u00ading cov\u00aders and pro\u00admo\u00adtion\u00adal posters for his father\u2019s pub\u00adlish\u00ading house in 1951. He mar\u00adried Ire\u00adna in 1953 and pub\u00adlished his debut pic\u00adture book, \u201cApple,\u201d that same year. The first Miffy book fol\u00adlowed in 1955. <\/p>\n

   
\nThat year, he went on vaca\u00adtion to the sea\u00adside with his wife and their one-year-old son. His son pestered him to tell him a sto\u00adry about a lit\u00adtle bun\u00adny liv\u00ading in a gar\u00adden, which inspired Bruner to cre\u00adate Miffy. Into Miffy\u2019s sto\u00adry, the design\u00ader poured his pater\u00adnal love and fond child\u00adhood mem\u00ado\u00adries. Some\u00adone once asked Bruna why Miffy\u2019s mouth was drawn as an X, while the bun\u00adny\u2019s mouth was drawn as an X with a hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal line through it. Bruna replied that as a child, he had always thought a bun\u00adny\u2019s mouth was an X, and that the hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal line was added to the bun\u00adny\u2019s mouth to make him look old\u00ader. <\/p>\n

   
\nBrun\u00adner was a dili\u00adgent and pro\u00adlif\u00adic design\u00ader. In addi\u00adtion to cre\u00adat\u00ading more than 120 pic\u00adture books, he also designed cov\u00aders for more than 2,000 books and more than 100 post\u00adcards. He was also the recip\u00adi\u00adent of numer\u00adous awards, includ\u00ading the Dutch Gold\u00aden Brush, Sil\u00adver Brush, and Sil\u00adver Slate. For his out\u00adstand\u00ading con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions to the cul\u00adtur\u00adal field, Brun\u00adner was knight\u00aded by the Queen of the Nether\u00adlands in 1983 and knight\u00aded in 2001, and award\u00aded the Order of the Nether\u00adlands Lion.

\nBruner lived and worked in his home\u00adtown of Utrecht his entire life, and even now he rides his bicy\u00adcle to his stu\u00addio every day. His home\u00adtown is so proud of him and Miffy that there\u2019s a Miffy Square in Utrecht, fea\u00adtur\u00ading a stat\u00adue of Miffy sculpt\u00aded by his sec\u00adond son. A ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion hall ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to Bruner\u2019s work is locat\u00aded in the city\u2019s cen\u00adtral muse\u00adum, wel\u00adcom\u00ading vis\u00adi\u00adtors from around the world dai\u00adly. <\/p>\n

    Utrecht is also home to anoth\u00ader indus\u00adtri\u00adal design mas\u00adter, Ger\u00adrit Rietveld.
\nRietveld (1888\u20131964), a mas\u00adter of archi\u00adtec\u00adtur\u00adal design and fur\u00adni\u00adture, is renowned for his epony\u00admous \u201cRietveld Chair,\u201d which once led glob\u00adal design trends. Today, the tiny rab\u00adbit Miffy boasts a sim\u00adi\u00adlar rep\u00adu\u00adta\u00adtion, a fig\u00adure that should not be under\u00ades\u00adti\u00admat\u00aded!
