I know quite a bit about the girl with con\u00adgen\u00adi\u00adtal heart dis\u00adease, and I\u2019d like to add a few more details about the ori\u00adgin of the inci\u00addent.<\/p>\n

The first time I met this girl was on the after\u00adnoon of June 21, 2008, in Qunx\u00adin Vil\u00adlage, Han\u00adwang Town, Mianzhu, Sichuan. The Ren\u2019ai School had moved into the bam\u00adboo for\u00adest and had been in charge of class\u00ades for about half a month, and I had been in charge of the school for a week.There is a log that records those days.<\/a>, so I can now recall the exact time.<\/p>\n

Log of June 21st<\/a>The record says: \u201cIn the after\u00adnoon, a spe\u00adcial girl named Pan Yuli came to the school on her own and want\u00aded to reg\u00adis\u00adter for school. She was thir\u00adteen or four\u00adteen years old, the age for mid\u00addle school, but she had not been to school since kinder\u00adgarten. Her moth\u00ader brought her to this vil\u00adlage after she remar\u00adried. She has a con\u00adgen\u00adi\u00adtal heart dis\u00adease and feels exhaust\u00aded after a lit\u00adtle stren\u00adu\u00adous activ\u00adi\u00adty (such as walk\u00ading a few hun\u00addred meters in one breath) and needs to squat down to rest. She lacks basic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion skills. We learned all this from the side. We sym\u00adpa\u00adthized with her sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, but did not dare to accept her reg\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion rash\u00adly, so we asked oth\u00ader chil\u00addren to invite her moth\u00ader to the school. Her moth\u00ader said that due to the dif\u00adfi\u00adcult fam\u00adi\u00adly con\u00addi\u00adtions, Surgery has been unavail\u00adable for this child (doc\u00adtors report\u00aded\u00adly believe it\u2019s pos\u00adsi\u00adble), so her con\u00addi\u00adtion per\u00adsists to this day, with no school will\u00ading or will\u00ading to accept her. We told her moth\u00ader that the school wel\u00adcomes her to attend class\u00ades and study at any time. She can choose what\u00adev\u00ader class she wants, regard\u00adless of her abil\u00adi\u00adties, and does\u00adn\u2019t have to adhere to a cur\u00adricu\u00adlum (we rec\u00adom\u00admend start\u00ading with the low\u00ader grades). Based on our brief obser\u00adva\u00adtions, she has some learn\u00ading and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion skills, and a strong desire to learn. We hope her par\u00adents will over\u00adcome these chal\u00adlenges and try to pick her up every day. If that\u2019s not pos\u00adsi\u00adble, ask oth\u00ader stu\u00addents to accom\u00adpa\u00adny her to and from school.<\/p>\n

The girl came on her own, want\u00adi\u00adng to attend the class. It was clear that some of the chil\u00addren dis\u00adliked her, and Teacher Xiong Ying, who was famil\u00adiar with the vil\u00adlagers, was hes\u00adi\u00adtant to accept her. Hon\u00adest\u00adly, I was quite puz\u00adzled, because I believed that any\u00adone will\u00ading to attend could start regard\u00adless of age. So I asked anoth\u00ader child to find her moth\u00ader. Her moth\u00ader did\u00adn\u2019t seem too keen on the \u201cincon\u00adve\u00adnience\u201d of hav\u00ading the girl come, but the girl was des\u00adper\u00adate to come, so I per\u00adsuad\u00aded her moth\u00ader to find a way to send her.<\/p>\n

That after\u00adnoon, in the pho\u00adto tak\u00aden before school, she was in the pho\u00adto, the girl in crim\u00adson clothes:

From that day until we evac\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded the school, she insist\u00aded on com\u00ading to school. In fact, when I was walk\u00ading the group of chil\u00addren home on the after\u00adnoon of the 21st, I dis\u00adcov\u00adered that her home was very close to the school, per\u00adhaps even the clos\u00adest. But even on this short walk, she would squat down and rest three or four times. The oth\u00ader chil\u00addren were run\u00adning furi\u00adous\u00adly, and I asked them to slow down and wait for Pan Yuli. The girl named Pan Yuli refused to go home at noon, so anoth\u00ader lit\u00adtle girl, Tang Yi, accom\u00adpa\u00adnied her, read\u00ading and draw\u00ading togeth\u00ader. Pan Yuli\u2019s moth\u00ader and step\u00adfa\u00adther also arrived at the school, and her moth\u00ader brought her some dry food. I chat\u00adted with them again and learned that this girl had been depressed and silent for over a year, and I did\u00adn\u2019t know why. I observed her and found that she real\u00adly could\u00adn\u2019t read and read books entire\u00adly by look\u00ading at pic\u00adtures. So I took her to bor\u00adrow a book, and she said she want\u00aded to read \u201cSnow White.\u201d I found her a copy and read to her, and she lis\u00adtened with great inter\u00adest.\u201d

Hon\u00adest\u00adly, I was quite anx\u00adious dur\u00ading those first few days, des\u00adper\u00adate to find some way to help this girl quick\u00adly get into read\u00ading. So I asked the oth\u00ader vol\u00adun\u00adteer teach\u00aders for help and offered her some pri\u00advate tutor\u00ading. But she pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly came to lis\u00adten to our sto\u00adry\u00adtimes, stay\u00ading in the Grades 1\u20133 class. If the teacher was\u00adn\u2019t telling a sto\u00adry, like lead\u00ading the chil\u00addren in poet\u00adry recita\u00adtion, she\u2019d wan\u00adder off to the side to flip through the pages (or look at the pic\u00adtures). When\u00adev\u00ader one of our vol\u00adun\u00adteers had a free moment, they would go over and help her read a sto\u00adry or two. I also tried get\u00adting her to rec\u00adog\u00adnize char\u00adac\u00adters simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly, only rec\u00adog\u00adniz\u00ading three char\u00adac\u00adters on a page before turn\u00ading it over. But even with those three char\u00adac\u00adters, she\u2019d get impa\u00adtient after a few pages. Judg\u00ading from her reac\u00adtions, I think her basic intel\u00adli\u00adgence was\u00adn\u2019t bad, but I was cer\u00adtain she\u2019d nev\u00ader received seri\u00adous instruc\u00adtion before. Her atten\u00adtion span and patience were both very lim\u00adit\u00aded, except when lis\u00adten\u00ading to a sto\u00adry.

\nLog of June 23<\/a>I wrote: \u201cToday I paid spe\u00adcial atten\u00adtion to Pan Yuli (a few days ago I mis\u00adtak\u00aden\u00adly wrote her as Huang Yuli, as she takes her moth\u00ader\u2019s sur\u00adname) who suf\u00adfers from con\u00adgen\u00adi\u00adtal heart dis\u00adease. She tru\u00adly has a deep desire to read. Although she rarely speaks a word, she pulls me to read to her when\u00adev\u00ader she has the chance. What made me par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly hap\u00adpy that day was that this girl was grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly being accept\u00aded by the oth\u00ader chil\u00addren, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly the younger ones in grades 1\u20133, who were kinder and less prej\u00adu\u00addiced than the old\u00ader ones. When\u00adev\u00ader I saw oth\u00ader chil\u00addren inten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly or unin\u00adten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly reject\u00ading her, I felt bad. I thought it was so unfair\u2026

\nLog of June 24th<\/a>\u201cToday I arranged a spe\u00adcial les\u00adson for Pan Yuli. We found a pic\u00adture book with\u00adout a cov\u00ader. It con\u00adtained Dis\u00adney sto\u00adries, and Alice in Won\u00adder\u00adland par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded her. The book has large print and pinyin. I read it with her page by page, try\u00ading to point and read, ask\u00ading her to fol\u00adlow along. As long as she rec\u00adog\u00adnized three char\u00adac\u00adters on each page, we would con\u00adtin\u00adue. At first, she strug\u00adgled, but grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly got bet\u00adter. How\u00adev\u00ader, per\u00adhaps due to phys\u00adi\u00adcal rea\u00adsons or habit, she only made it past five pages. Even so, her progress was sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant, and she can now read sev\u00ader\u00adal sen\u00adtences rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly com\u00adplete\u00adly, which is very dif\u00adfi\u00adcult for her. Com\u00adpared to younger chil\u00addren, her abil\u00adi\u00adty to under\u00adstand the sto\u00adry is slight\u00adly bet\u00adter, but her abil\u00adi\u00adty to imi\u00adtate lan\u00adguage is much weak\u00ader. She strug\u00adgles to fol\u00adlow along and often has to repeat her\u00adself. I think read\u00ading to her as often as pos\u00adsi\u00adble is the only way to over\u00adcome this prob\u00adlem. Per\u00adhaps there is a bet\u00adter way. I have invit\u00aded all the teach\u00aders in the school to make time to read to her.\u201d

On the morn\u00ading of the fifth day, I specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly called Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Zhang of Sina Ear\u00adly Child\u00adhood Edu\u00adca\u00adtion to dis\u00adcuss a bet\u00adter approach for this girl. Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Zhang sug\u00adgest\u00aded that since I could\u00adn\u2019t devote a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant amount of time to teach\u00ading her to read and write, it would be best to focus on hav\u00ading her lis\u00adten to stories\u2014the more the better\u2014to cul\u00adti\u00advate her inter\u00adest and allow her to gain wis\u00addom from them. I felt this advice was sound. If her health issues weren\u2019t addressed and her fam\u00adi\u00adly could\u00adn\u2019t be more proac\u00adtive, a short-term cul\u00adtur\u00adal pro\u00adgram would be vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly point\u00adless. I had already planned to leave on June 28th and return on July 10th, but time was run\u00adning out.

\nI left Zhulin Acad\u00ade\u00admy on June 28th and nev\u00ader returned. Inspec\u00adtor Car\u00adrot con\u00adtin\u00adued to pre\u00adside until the entire acad\u00ade\u00admy was evac\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded on July 5th.
