Span\u00adish illus\u00adtra\u00adtor Mar\u00adta Eds<\/strong>\uff08Mar\u00adta Alt\u00e9s<\/a>(1982-) is a ris\u00ading star in the British pic\u00adture book world. While not prolific\u2014having cre\u00adat\u00aded only nine pic\u00adture books since her debut in 2011\u2014her work has gar\u00adnered her numer\u00adous pres\u00adti\u00adgious acco\u00adlades, includ\u00ading a short\u00adlist for the Water\u00adstones Chil\u00addren\u2019s Book Award, two nom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtions for the Green\u00adaway Medal, and an Ezra Jack Keats Award for Best New\u00adcom\u00ader. More impor\u00adtant\u00adly, her works are wide\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar, hav\u00ading been trans\u00adlat\u00aded into near\u00adly 20 dif\u00adfer\u00adent lan\u00adguages, demon\u00adstrat\u00ading a high degree of cross-cul\u00adtur\u00adal accep\u00adtance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Mar\u00adta was born in Barcelona in 1982, where she grew up and stud\u00adied graph\u00adic design, even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly becom\u00ading a graph\u00adic design\u00ader after grad\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion. Her life seemed peace\u00adful and smooth sail\u00ading, but Mar\u00adta could\u00adn\u2019t set\u00adtle for less. From a young age, she loved pic\u00adture books and longed to become a pic\u00adture book illus\u00adtra\u00adtor, an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty she could\u00adn\u2019t have in her home\u00adtown. So, in 2009, she decid\u00aded to study chil\u00addren\u2019s book illus\u00adtra\u00adtion at Cam\u00adbridge School of Art in the UK. She suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly com\u00adplet\u00aded her stud\u00adies and imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly began cre\u00adat\u00ading pic\u00adture books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mar\u00adta\u2019s debut book, *No!* (Guangxi Nor\u00admal Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty Press, 2015), pub\u00adlished in 2011, show\u00adcased her tal\u00adent for illus\u00adtrat\u00aded sto\u00adry\u00adtelling, along with her sig\u00adna\u00adture light humor. The book fea\u00adtures a cute lit\u00adtle dog nar\u00adrat\u00ading the every\u00adday life of his fam\u00adi\u00adly in the first per\u00adson; the dog\u2019s bound\u00adless ener\u00adgy and self-absorp\u00adtion, con\u00adtrast\u00aded with the var\u00adi\u00adous embar\u00adrass\u00ading sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions depict\u00aded in the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, will have read\u00aders laugh\u00ading out loud. The huge suc\u00adcess of her debut book estab\u00adlished Mar\u00adta in the British pic\u00adture book world and gave her immense con\u00adfi\u00addence. From 2012 to 2016, she main\u00adtained a con\u00adsis\u00adtent pace of releas\u00ading one excel\u00adlent pic\u00adture book each year: *My Grand\u00adpa*, *I am an Artist*, *My New Home*, *The King Cat*, and *Lit\u00adtle Mon\u00adkey*. After that, her writ\u00ading slowed down until 2019\u20132020 when she pub\u00adlished \u201cFive More Min\u00adutes\u201d and \u201cNew In Town,\u201d and three years lat\u00ader she pub\u00adlished her lat\u00adest book, \u201cIt Was\u00adn\u2019t Me!\u201d. Except for \u201cNo,\u201d the oth\u00ader eight books are includ\u00aded in the \u201cMar\u00adta\u2019s Growth and Art Pic\u00adture Books\u201d series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few pic\u00adture book cre\u00adators are nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly adept at the unique nar\u00adra\u00adtive style of pic\u00adture books from the out\u00adset; Mar\u00adta is an excep\u00adtion. This may be part\u00adly due to her pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal train\u00ading at Cam\u00adbridge School of Art, but it should also be attrib\u00aduted to her own pas\u00adsion and tal\u00adent. From a nar\u00adra\u00adtive per\u00adspec\u00adtive, most of her pic\u00adture books are told in the first per\u00adson, using char\u00adac\u00adters such as pup\u00adpies, kit\u00adtens, mon\u00adkeys, grand\u00adchil\u00addren, lit\u00adtle artists, and old\u00ader broth\u00aders. This kind of nar\u00adra\u00adtion is very immer\u00adsive, allow\u00ading read\u00aders to feel as if they are there, expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading the gen\u00aduine emo\u00adtions of the \u201cI\u201d in the sto\u00adry. How\u00adev\u00ader, this kind of nar\u00adra\u00adtion also has lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions, often being too sub\u00adjec\u00adtive and lack\u00ading a more objec\u00adtive obser\u00adva\u00adtion from a third-par\u00adty per\u00adspec\u00adtive. So, how does Mar\u00adta address this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u201cNo!\u201d, the nar\u00adra\u00adtor is the fam\u00adi\u00adly\u2019s beloved lit\u00adtle dog, who believes his name is \u201cNo!\u201d because every\u00adone con\u00adstant\u00adly yells \u201cNo!\u201d at him. How\u00adev\u00ader, he even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly dis\u00adcov\u00aders that the name tag on his leash reads \u201cSpike\u201d\u2014and through the accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, the read\u00ader has already noticed the clues, clear\u00adly under\u00adstand\u00ading that Spike often unknow\u00ading\u00adly mis\u00adbe\u00adhaves and steals food, caus\u00ading the fam\u00adi\u00adly to con\u00adstant\u00adly yell \u201cNo!\u201d Even so, every\u00adone still loves him dear\u00adly. The com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of text and illus\u00adtra\u00adtions cre\u00adates a heart\u00adwarm\u00ading effect, allow\u00ading read\u00aders of all ages to expe\u00adri\u00adence a touch\u00ading por\u00adtray\u00adal of par\u00adent-child rela\u00adtion\u00adships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mar\u00adta seems to have mas\u00adter\u00adful\u00adly employed this nar\u00adra\u00adtive tech\u00adnique through\u00adout. For exam\u00adple, in *Elvis*, the nar\u00adra\u00adtor is the first pet cat in the house, and the sto\u00adry is told entire\u00adly from the cat\u2019s per\u00adspec\u00adtive. The nar\u00adra\u00adtor feels like the king of the house, dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00ading the ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry, all the resources, and all the affec\u00adtion, until one day a new dog arrives, dis\u00adrupt\u00ading the old order and seem\u00ading\u00adly threat\u00aden\u00ading to take away the nar\u00adra\u00adtor\u2019s ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry and affec\u00adtion. Adult read\u00aders will eas\u00adi\u00adly rec\u00adog\u00adnize that this actu\u00adal\u00adly depicts the pos\u00adsi\u00adble reac\u00adtions of the first\u00adborn child when a sec\u00adond child arrives. Antho\u00adny Browne would use sur\u00adre\u00adal\u00adism, like in *Kid\u2019s Home Is Dif\u00adfer\u00adent*, to address such top\u00adics, adding a lay\u00ader of weighty mys\u00adtery. But Mar\u00adta tells the sto\u00adry through the voice of a cat, while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly show\u00ading the read\u00ader the var\u00adi\u00adous mis\u00adchie\u00advous and adorable moments of the new dog, the cat\u2019s annoy\u00adance when the pup\u00adpy is run\u00adning wild, and the cat\u2019s lone\u00adli\u00adness when the pup\u00adpy is not around. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, the nar\u00adra\u00adtor con\u00adtin\u00adues to be the king of the house, treat\u00ading the dog as his clos\u00adest play\u00admate. Mar\u00adta\u2019s play\u00adful\u00adness and humor are hid\u00adden with\u00adin this seem\u00ading\u00adly light and easy\u00adgo\u00ading text-and-image nar\u00adra\u00adtive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her two books pub\u00adlished in 2019\u20132020, Mar\u00adta fur\u00adther mas\u00adter\u00adful\u00adly employed this inter\u00adwo\u00adven text and image nar\u00adra\u00adtive tech\u00adnique. For exam\u00adple, in *A New City, A New Home*, a large, fluffy dog arrives in a new city search\u00ading for a new home. The dog asks the locals for direc\u00adtions, and the text reads, \u201cThey all seem very will\u00ading to give direc\u00adtions! But I don\u2019t always under\u00adstand what they\u2019re point\u00ading to.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, in the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, we see the dog wag\u00adging its tail very ami\u00adca\u00adbly, unin\u00adten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly caus\u00ading trou\u00adble as a wait\u00ader and a fruit ven\u00addor point and tell the dog to leave! This delib\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly cre\u00adat\u00aded \u201cmis\u00adun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00ading\u201d between text and image pro\u00adduces a play\u00adful effect that is both evoca\u00adtive and play\u00adful, result\u00ading in a delight\u00adful sur\u00adprise that brings a smile to the read\u00ader\u2019s face. It also allows read\u00aders to gain a rich\u00ader expe\u00adri\u00adence from dif\u00adfer\u00adent per\u00adspec\u00adtives, encour\u00adag\u00ading them to try to empathize and reflect. In this book, read\u00aders may not only smile but also feel the lone\u00adli\u00adness and des\u00ado\u00adla\u00adtion expe\u00adri\u00adenced by a new\u00adcom\u00ader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFive More Min\u00adutes\u201d uti\u00adlizes the cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00addence and com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson between text and image nar\u00adra\u00adtives to show read\u00aders the sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant dif\u00adfer\u00adences in mind\u00adset and state between chil\u00addren and adults in the dai\u00adly process of rais\u00ading chil\u00addren. Through the first-per\u00adson nar\u00adra\u00adtion of the lit\u00adtle boy and the rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly objec\u00adtive pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion in the illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, it reveals the dif\u00adfer\u00adences in the per\u00adceived length, speed, and pres\u00adence or absence of time. With a very child\u00adlike and cheer\u00adful sto\u00adry, it rein\u00adter\u00adprets Ein\u00adstein\u2019s humor\u00adous yet pro\u00adfound \u201cthe\u00ado\u00adry of rel\u00ada\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty of time.\u201d Ein\u00adstein\u2019s exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adtal report con\u00adclud\u00aded that \u201cthe observer\u2019s psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal state has a great influ\u00adence on the per\u00adcep\u00adtion of time.\u201d Mar\u00adta uses the fox boy as a metaphor for this per\u00adcep\u00adtion, allow\u00ading read\u00aders to make rel\u00ada\u00adtive\u00adly objec\u00adtive obser\u00adva\u00adtions with\u00adin the illus\u00adtrat\u00aded sto\u00adry. Read\u00aders of all ages, due to their dif\u00adfer\u00adent roles in rais\u00ading chil\u00addren, will also empathize with dif\u00adfer\u00adent emo\u00adtions. Pub\u00adlished in 2023, *Not Me!* marks the first time Mar\u00adta Braun has writ\u00adten and illus\u00adtrat\u00aded her own work with\u00adout using a first-per\u00adson nar\u00adra\u00adtive. This is like\u00adly because the book is the most per\u00adson\u00adal, with the two pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnists, Ellis and Char\u00adlie, per\u00adhaps reflec\u00adtions of her\u00adself, neces\u00adsi\u00adtat\u00ading the use of a third-per\u00adson per\u00adspec\u00adtive. She ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded the book to Luke, say\u00ading, \u201cI love hid\u00ading things so he can\u2019t find them.\u201d Per\u00adhaps the sto\u00adry\u2019s inspi\u00adra\u00adtion stemmed direct\u00adly from real life. The per\u00adfect island in the book eas\u00adi\u00adly evokes the image of home, and the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between Ellis and Char\u00adlie can be seen as inti\u00admate roman\u00adtic rela\u00adtion\u00adships or close friend\u00adships. Their rela\u00adtion\u00adship is destroyed by an \u201cinvis\u00adi\u00adble hand\u201d that steals what they share with\u00adout their knowl\u00adedge. How\u00adev\u00ader, upon clos\u00ader exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, the real prob\u00adlem lies in their mutu\u00adal sus\u00adpi\u00adcion, buck-pass\u00ading, and loss of trust and coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion in solv\u00ading prob\u00adlems. \u2014Martha uses the pic\u00adture book for\u00admat to show read\u00aders the \u201ccul\u00adprit,\u201d a large bird that isn\u2019t inher\u00adent\u00adly evil; it sim\u00adply needs to raise its chicks and build its own home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through\u00adout Mar\u00adta\u2019s pic\u00adture books, the core theme she focus\u00ades on is \u201cfam\u00adi\u00adly.\u201d Although most sto\u00adries fea\u00adture ani\u00admal pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnists, read\u00aders can eas\u00adi\u00adly dis\u00adcern that they are all about fam\u00adi\u00adly. In *My Grand\u00adfa\u00adther*, the bear and grand\u00adfa\u00adther rep\u00adre\u00adsent all human grand\u00adpar\u00adents and grand\u00adchil\u00addren; *Elvis*, ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to \u201cmy broth\u00ader Bur\u00adnett,\u201d is clear\u00adly about sib\u00adlings; the rac\u00adcoon in *My New Home* rep\u00adre\u00adsents all chil\u00addren who have moved; *New City, New Home* is also about mov\u00ading, but the big, fluffy dog could also be an adult expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading a new city; *Five More Min\u00adutes* seems more like a sto\u00adry of a sin\u00adgle-par\u00adent fam\u00adi\u00adly with an amaz\u00ading dad and two lit\u00adtle boys; *Lit\u00adtle Artist* is some\u00adwhat like a bat\u00adtle of wits between a moth\u00ader and son who love art; even in *The Lit\u00adtle Mon\u00adkey*, set entire\u00adly in the jun\u00adgle, the mon\u00adkey troop feels like a large fam\u00adi\u00adly, and Mar\u00adta admits that the lit\u00adtle mon\u00adkey is, in a way, her\u00adself. Her reflec\u00adtion on liv\u00ading in a large fam\u00adi\u00adly, expressed by the lit\u00adtle mon\u00adkey, is, \u201cBecause the small\u00ader you are, the greater the chal\u00adlenges you face. But the best part is, the big\u00adger the hugs you get.\u201d\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because a per\u00adson receives enough warmth and sup\u00adport at \u201chome,\u201d they have the courage and con\u00adfi\u00addence to explore the wider world with curios\u00adi\u00adty, find new friends in new places, and build a new home in a new city. This is Mar\u00adta\u2019s own expe\u00adri\u00adence and insight. She now lives in Lon\u00addon, Eng\u00adland, and is ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to cre\u00adat\u00ading chil\u00addren\u2019s book illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, while also serv\u00ading as a part-time teacher at her alma mater, Cam\u00adbridge School of Art. The fairy tales in her pic\u00adture books are, to some extent, a reflec\u00adtion of her own growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mar\u00adta\u2019s work is not only wit\u00adty and humor\u00adous, but also deeply mov\u00ading. In \u201cMy Grand\u00adfa\u00adther,\u201d the ele\u00adments are remark\u00adably sim\u00adpli\u00adfied, with the back\u00adground often com\u00adplete\u00adly reduced to a deep red bear and a light brown\u00adish-gray bear. This col\u00ador com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion is high\u00adly sym\u00adbol\u00adic; the for\u00admer evokes bound\u00adless vital\u00adi\u00adty, while the lat\u00adter con\u00adjures images of advanced age. The two col\u00adors, com\u00adbined with spe\u00adcif\u00adic shapes, dance against a sim\u00adple and ele\u00adgant background\u2014Grandfather walks alone, accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by red fall\u00aden leaves; when rest\u00ading on a park bench, he is accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by red and gray birds, and even in the dis\u00adtance, there are two trees, one red and one gray! Then, the appear\u00adance of \u201cI\u201d (the deep red bear) imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly brings the scene to life. The nine con\u00adsec\u00adu\u00adtive dou\u00adble-page spreads depict\u00ading \u201cI\u201d and Grand\u00adfa\u00adther\u2019s inter\u00adac\u00adtions inevitably bring to mind John Burn\u00ading\u00adham\u2019s \u201cGrand\u00adpa,\u201d equal\u00adly touch\u00ading, but unlike \u201cGrand\u00adpa,\u201d which focus\u00ades more on per\u00adson\u00adal mem\u00ado\u00adries, \u201cMy Grand\u00adfa\u00adther\u201d evokes a more uni\u00adver\u00adsal asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy grand\u00adfa\u00adther was very lone\u00adly when he was alone, but he was a com\u00adplete\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent per\u00adson when he was with the chil\u00addren. Some\u00adtimes he was like an old man, and some\u00adtimes he was like a child. When he was con\u00adfused, he seemed not to rec\u00adog\u00adnize any\u00adone, but when he hugged the chil\u00addren, he seemed to remem\u00adber every\u00adthing. \u201cSome\u00adtimes, I am his eyes\u2026sometimes, he is my eyes\u2026\u201d\u2014these two pages are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly won\u00adder\u00adful. The illus\u00adtra\u00adtions are still dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded by red, brown, and gray tones, but sud\u00adden\u00adly they become col\u00ador\u00adful. The mutu\u00adal see\u00ading and dis\u00adcov\u00adery between grand\u00adfa\u00adther and grand\u00adson allows life to be enriched to the fullest extent. It is this unique depen\u00addence and mutu\u00adal appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion that pre\u00advents the sto\u00adry from end\u00ading with a dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtion like Antho\u00adny Browne\u2019s \u201cMy Dad,\u201d but rather \u201cBut that\u2019s him. I love him just the way he is.\u201d\u2014It is prob\u00ada\u00adbly because of this unique and mov\u00ading pow\u00ader that this book was select\u00aded for Mar\u00adtin Sel\u00adl\u00adis\u00adbury\u2019s (author of \u201cThe Guide to Cre\u00adat\u00ading Chil\u00addren\u2019s Pic\u00adture Books\u201d) \u201c100 Great Chil\u00addren\u2019s Pic\u00adture\u00adbooks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, the book that sur\u00adprised me the most among Mar\u00adta\u2019s works is *Lit\u00adtle Artist*, which is absolute\u00adly adorable! She must have let loose in this book, push\u00ading the humor to near-hilar\u00adi\u00adous lev\u00adels while ele\u00adgant\u00adly answer\u00ading ques\u00adtions like \u201cWhat is art?\u201d and \u201cWhat is the rela\u00adtion\u00adship between art and life?\u201d From a tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal per\u00adspec\u00adtive, the lit\u00adtle boy in the book seems like a naive and mis\u00adchie\u00advous trou\u00adble\u00admak\u00ader at home, com\u00ading up with one mis\u00adchie\u00advous idea after anoth\u00ader, while his incred\u00adi\u00adbly patient moth\u00ader tire\u00adless\u00adly responds, final\u00adly secur\u00ading a brief moment of peace and qui\u00adet at mid\u00adday. But the end\u00adless\u00adly cre\u00adative and ener\u00adgetic lit\u00adtle boy, using these pre\u00adcious two hours and ten min\u00adutes (look at the wall clock), unleash\u00ades a spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar attack\u2014you can imag\u00adine the earth-shat\u00adter\u00ading roar his moth\u00ader will let out when she wakes up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But wait, what if we look at it from a dif\u00adfer\u00adent angle? For exam\u00adple, if we reread this sto\u00adry from the per\u00adspec\u00adtive of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary art, the result might be com\u00adplete\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent. I once shared this book with all the fifth-grade stu\u00addents in a school (about 400 stu\u00addents). Before shar\u00ading, I asked them, \u201cWho thinks they have an artis\u00adtic taste?\u201d Only one or two stu\u00addents brave\u00adly raised their hands, because their paint\u00adings had won awards in the city. Then, we read \u201cLit\u00adtle Artist\u201d togeth\u00ader. Every \u201cwork\u201d cre\u00adat\u00aded by the lit\u00adtle boy in the book elicit\u00aded bursts of laugh\u00adter. The chil\u00addren claimed that they actu\u00adal\u00adly quite liked it, but on the oth\u00ader hand, they said, \u201cI\u2019ll def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly get scold\u00aded by my mom,\u201d so they did\u00adn\u2019t con\u00adsid\u00ader them works of art. How\u00adev\u00ader, when I showed them more rec\u00adog\u00adnized works of art, such as Dal\u00adi\u2019s mus\u00adtache, David Hock\u00adney\u2019s \u201cMul\u00adti\u00adple Self-Por\u00adtraits,\u201d Manet\u2019s \u201cLun\u00adcheon on the Grass,\u201d Ai Wei\u00adwei\u2019s instal\u00adla\u00adtion art, and Yves Klein\u2019s \u201cKlein Blue,\u201d the chil\u00addren were pleas\u00adant\u00adly sur\u00adprised because they dis\u00adcov\u00adered that their lik\u00ading and iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion were actu\u00adal\u00adly \u201clegit\u00adi\u00admate\u201d! Only when you let go of stan\u00addard answers can you tru\u00adly engage with life and expe\u00adri\u00adence gen\u00aduine artis\u00adtic enjoy\u00adment. \u201cLit\u00adtle Artists\u201d sim\u00adply tries to tell chil\u00addren that they are all artists by nature, and as long as they don\u2019t let stan\u00addard answers wear down their edges and sense of fun, they still have the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to become artists in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
