Pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly, there was a hard\u00adcov\u00ader edi\u00adtion. It col\u00adlects and adapts 30 famous ancient fables, fea\u00adtur\u00ading illus\u00adtra\u00adtions by renowned illus\u00adtra\u00adtors such as He Youzhi, Dai Dun\u00adbang, Ma Rujin, Wu Jian\u00adhua, Yu Li, Wang Xiaom\u00ading, and Miao Wei. Almost every\u00adone has heard of the \u201cEight Immor\u00adtals,\u201d but few\u00ader and few\u00ader can reel off their names, and even few\u00ader can recount their ori\u00adgins and mag\u00adi\u00adcal sto\u00adries. Over\u00adall, while this series of books is intend\u00aded for chil\u00addren, it\u2019s also well-suit\u00aded for adults. The author, an old farmer, appears to be a researcher, and the sto\u00adries are well-orga\u00adnized, though not over\u00adly vivid, but cer\u00adtain\u00adly reli\u00adable. The illus\u00adtra\u00adtions in this series are absolute\u00adly top-notch, cre\u00adat\u00aded by Mr. Yang Yongqing, whose illus\u00adtra\u00adtions for \u201cMa Liang: The Mag\u00adic Brush\u201d are per\u00adhaps more famil\u00adiar. They main\u00adtain the same tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal style, cre\u00adat\u00ading a tru\u00adly authen\u00adtic and engag\u00ading expe\u00adri\u00adence.<\/p>\n

High\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded! I read and was cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded by it as a child, and I\u2019ve nev\u00ader for\u00adgot\u00adten it. The com\u00adic strips of Chi\u00adnese idiom sto\u00adries pub\u00adlished by Shang\u00adhai Peo\u00adple\u2019s Fine Arts Pub\u00adlish\u00ading House are so enter\u00adtain\u00ading and infor\u00adma\u00adtive. I rent\u00aded them from street ven\u00addors as a kid and nev\u00ader read them all. Now, wow, there are 60 books, over 500 idiom sto\u00adries, all wrapped in a blue box\u2014what a lux\u00adu\u00adry! The new edi\u00adtion also includes a help\u00adful guide, like a search tool, allow\u00ading you to search by pinyin and strokes. Amaz\u00ading! The whole set is like a minia\u00adture idiom dic\u00adtio\u00adnary in com\u00adic book form. Kids today are tru\u00adly blessed, but they might not expe\u00adri\u00adence this\u2026<\/p>\n

The Chi\u00adnese nation com\u00adpris\u00ades 56 eth\u00adnic groups, each with count\u00adless sto\u00adries to tell, each rich and col\u00ador\u00adful. This so-called \u201cmuse\u00adum\u201d of books only cap\u00adtures a small por\u00adtion, with each eth\u00adnic group offer\u00ading just one sto\u00adry (two for the Han), but tak\u00aden togeth\u00ader, the col\u00adlec\u00adtion is quite impres\u00adsive. This is a tru\u00adly spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar col\u00adlec\u00adtion of folk sto\u00adry pic\u00adture books, fea\u00adtur\u00ading a book for each eth\u00adnic group. The large for\u00admat and beau\u00adti\u00adful illus\u00adtra\u00adtions show\u00adcase the sto\u00adries and cus\u00adtoms of each eth\u00adnic group, cre\u00adat\u00ading a seam\u00adless, one-piece scroll. Amaz\u00ading\u00adly, these books were pub\u00adlished between 1990 and 1992, yet their qual\u00adi\u00adty remains remark\u00adably high today! Mr. Ma Yongjie, the chief plan\u00adner of this series, cur\u00adrent\u00adly over\u00adsees the main\u00adland pub\u00adlish\u00ading efforts of Xinyi Pic\u00adture Books. He is tru\u00adly a wor\u00adthy pub\u00adlish\u00ader.<\/p>\n

When we redis\u00adcov\u00adered this set of books, we could describe our feel\u00adings as ecsta\u00adt\u00adic. Dr. Wang Lin even wrote an enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic book review for it.Unre\u00adpeat\u00adable splen\u00addor<\/a>\u300b.<\/p>\n

Pic\u00adture Book Chi\u00adna Series 7 Vol\u00adumes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

This is a set of authen\u00adtic and orig\u00adi\u00adnal Chi\u00adnese pic\u00adture books launched by Tomor\u00adrow Pub\u00adlish\u00ading House on the occa\u00adsion of the New Year of 2008. From sto\u00adries, lan\u00adguage to paint\u00ading styles, it strives very hard to show the con\u00adno\u00adta\u00adtion of pure Chi\u00adnese cul\u00adtur\u00adal fla\u00advor, so the name of the series \u201cPic\u00adture Book Chi\u00adna\u201d is quite appro\u00adpri\u00adate.<\/p>\n

Those famil\u00adiar with the work of illus\u00adtra\u00adtor Xiong Liang will know that many of the works in this series are actu\u00adal\u00adly old works, some of which were pub\u00adlished sev\u00ader\u00adal years ago in Tai\u00adwan, across the Tai\u00adwan Strait, and have been quite pop\u00adu\u00adlar with readers\u2014after all, there are so few pic\u00adture books that are \u201cvery Chi\u00adnese.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, per\u00adhaps at this stage, the author\u2019s empha\u00adsis on high\u00adlight\u00ading Chi\u00adnese cul\u00adture is too strong, and the inter\u00adest of the sto\u00adries them\u00adselves (espe\u00adcial\u00adly for chil\u00addren) is a lit\u00adtle pale.<\/p>\n

Let me let you in on the fact that I sug\u00adgest\u00aded the title \u201cSen\u00adti\u00admen\u00adtal Chi\u00adna\u201d for this series. I chose \u201csense\u201d because sev\u00ader\u00adal of the books are about singing, and some are even singable (like \u201cSu Wu Shep\u00adherd\u00ading Sheep\u201d). I chose \u201cemo\u00adtion\u201d because this is the illus\u00adtra\u00adtion style that Mr. Xiong Liang par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly val\u00adues: mov\u00ading peo\u00adple with emo\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

Com\u00adpared to the old\u00ader works in \u201cPic\u00adture Book Chi\u00adna,\u201d this series, with its authen\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly Chi\u00adnese fla\u00advor, has made sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant strides in mak\u00ading the sto\u00adries engag\u00ading. For exam\u00adple, the sto\u00adries in \u201cPeking Opera Cats\u201d are so cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading that they\u2019ll make chil\u00addren laugh out loud (which isn\u2019t always easy). \u201cLotus Returns\u201d is per\u00adhaps the most child\u00adlike work, both in its illus\u00adtra\u00adtions and its sto\u00adry; and \u201cMy Lit\u00adtle Pony\u201d is arguably Mr. Xiong Liang\u2019s mas\u00adter\u00adpiece, ful\u00adly show\u00adcas\u00ading the artist\u2019s indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty and artis\u00adtic pur\u00adsuits.<\/p>\n

I gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly don\u2019t rec\u00adom\u00admend rewrites of clas\u00adsics, as it\u2019s dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to do well; it\u2019s bet\u00adter to read the orig\u00adi\u00adnals direct\u00adly. I rec\u00adom\u00admend this series pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly for its illus\u00adtra\u00adtions. The illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, cre\u00adat\u00aded by the Qiy\u00adibao Chil\u00addren\u2019s Book Stu\u00addio, are by broth\u00aders Xiong Lei and Xiong Liang. They main\u00adtain their dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive Xiong style, striv\u00ading to blend tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal Chi\u00adnese cul\u00adtur\u00adal sym\u00adbols with chil\u00addren\u2019s inter\u00adests. While there may be moments of suc\u00adcess and oth\u00aders of less\u00ader acclaim, it\u2019s at least a com\u00admend\u00adable attempt. While every read\u00ader has their own pref\u00ader\u00adences and choic\u00ades regard\u00ading illus\u00adtra\u00adtion style, I par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly like the \u201cClas\u00adsic of Moun\u00adtains and Seas\u201d and \u201cLiaozhai\u201d (Strange Sto\u00adries from a Chi\u00adnese Stu\u00addio) in this series.<\/p>\n

This series of books is a set of fun pock\u00adet com\u00adic books. It is based on the thoughts of great Chi\u00adnese thinkers such as Con\u00adfu\u00adcius, Men\u00adcius, and Zhuangzi dur\u00ading the Spring and Autumn Peri\u00adod and the War\u00adring States Peri\u00adod, and inter\u00adprets their immor\u00adtal wis\u00addom over thou\u00adsands of years in the form of light-heart\u00aded comics.<\/p>\n

Using comics to illus\u00adtrate clas\u00adsic Chi\u00adnese cul\u00adture is noth\u00ading new; Tai\u00adwan\u2019s Cai Zhizhong\u2019s comics are prob\u00ada\u00adbly clas\u00adsics of this kind. In com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson, Xin\u00adlei Pub\u00adlish\u00ading\u2019s main\u00adland-orig\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded mini-com\u00adic books are a bit sim\u00adpler, more suit\u00adable for younger chil\u00addren, and more engag\u00ading.<\/p>\n

This book is a very spe\u00adcial edi\u00adtion, fea\u00adtur\u00ading a col\u00adlec\u00adtion of very old chil\u00addren\u2019s songs by a near\u00adly for\u00adgot\u00adten musi\u00adcian. The accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading CD also includes record\u00adings of equal\u00adly old ver\u00adsions of these songs. Mr. Li Jin\u00adhui, once revered as the \u201cFather of Chi\u00adnese Chil\u00addren\u2019s Musi\u00adcal,\u201d cre\u00adat\u00aded chil\u00addren\u2019s songs (pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly from the 1920s) that have long been wide\u00adly sung, becom\u00ading \u201ccen\u00adtu\u00adry-old clas\u00adsics\u201d of chil\u00addren\u2019s music. Per\u00adhaps the most famous of these is \u201cPoor Qiux\u00adi\u00adang,\u201d a favorite of mine. Inter\u00adest\u00ading\u00adly, despite its age, his songs still sound so famil\u00adiar.<\/p>\n
