1. Today is Sat\u00adur\u00adday, but class\u00ades con\u00adtin\u00adue on week\u00adends. Three more stu\u00addents have signed up for Niu\u00adbi Vil\u00adlage School, and we\u2019re attend\u00ading morn\u00ading read\u00ading, cul\u00adtur\u00adal read\u00ading, Eng\u00adlish, and music class\u00ades. Mil\u00adi\u00adtary train\u00ading was sus\u00adpend\u00aded dur\u00ading the third peri\u00adod due to heavy rain. Xiaoyi (a vol\u00adun\u00adteer at Heart of Chi\u00adna) is cur\u00adrent\u00adly unable to teach at Niu\u00adbi Vil\u00adlage School, so teach\u00aders here will con\u00adtin\u00adue to take over for the time being.

2. At the Ren\u2019ai School in Qunx\u00adin Vil\u00adlage, class\u00ades con\u00adtin\u00adued as nor\u00admal this morn\u00ading, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly con\u00adsist\u00ading of mil\u00adi\u00adtary train\u00ading, cul\u00adtur\u00adal read\u00ading, art, and morn\u00ading read\u00ading. One par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly note\u00adwor\u00adthy mil\u00adi\u00adtary train\u00ading ses\u00adsion was a unique one: two instruc\u00adtors orga\u00adnized all the stu\u00addents to march out of the school, divid\u00aded into groups of four, and help clean up garbage in pub\u00adlic areas and the reset\u00adtle\u00adment area. The stu\u00addents were enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic, and the vil\u00adlagers were very wel\u00adcom\u00ading. We hope that through sim\u00adi\u00adlar activ\u00adi\u00adties, we can cul\u00adti\u00advate a sense of dis\u00adci\u00adpline, team\u00adwork, and pub\u00adlic wel\u00adfare among the chil\u00addren, while also edu\u00adcat\u00ading the vil\u00adlagers on pub\u00adlic wel\u00adfare.<\/p>\n

3. The after\u00adnoon inter\u00adest and read\u00ading class at Qunx\u00adin\u00adcun School con\u00adtin\u00adued as usu\u00adal. Many chil\u00addren arrived before 1 a.m., but the offi\u00adcial bor\u00adrow\u00ading of books began at 1:30 p.m. The chil\u00addren lined up one by one to enter the read\u00ading room to bor\u00adrow books, then returned to their seats to read qui\u00adet\u00adly. We were delight\u00aded to see some of the chil\u00addren engrossed. After about an hour, when some chil\u00addren began to tire, we began group activ\u00adi\u00adties. Teacher Ajia began by read\u00ading aloud to the chil\u00addren. Those who did\u00adn\u2019t want to lis\u00adten could read on their own. Lat\u00ader, sev\u00ader\u00adal stu\u00addents were invit\u00aded to the stage to prac\u00adtice sto\u00adry\u00adtelling. Final\u00adly, Teacher Chen Chao led the stu\u00addents in singing and play\u00ading musi\u00adcal games. The after\u00adnoon activ\u00adi\u00adties con\u00adclud\u00aded at 3:30 p.m.

Cur\u00adrent\u00adly, the school\u2019s main cours\u00ades are very pop\u00adu\u00adlar among chil\u00addren, includ\u00ading morn\u00ading read\u00ading, cul\u00adtur\u00adal read\u00ading, mil\u00adi\u00adtary train\u00ading, art, music, and fun Eng\u00adlish. Chil\u00addren here usu\u00adal\u00adly speak the local Sichuan dialect, and teach\u00aders gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly only use the dialect. Only the Chi\u00adnese teacher reluc\u00adtant\u00adly uses unstan\u00addard Man\u00addarin when read\u00ading texts. Local par\u00adents report that the most notice\u00adable change in their chil\u00addren dur\u00ading this peri\u00adod is that they have start\u00aded speak\u00ading Man\u00addarin, and they speak more than before. One par\u00adent said that he has two chil\u00addren, one in fifth grade and one in the first grade of junior high. The junior high child, who attends Dongqi Mid\u00addle School, was very qui\u00adet for a peri\u00adod after the earth\u00adquake, and for two days he nei\u00adther ate nor spoke. He is very wel\u00adcome to the school and very grate\u00adful for the teach\u00aders\u2019 work.<\/p>\n

5. In the after\u00adnoon, a spe\u00adcial girl named Pan Yuli came to the school on her own ini\u00adtia\u00adtive, want\u00adi\u00adng to enroll. She was thir\u00adteen or four\u00adteen, high school age, but she had\u00adn\u2019t attend\u00aded school since kinder\u00adgarten. Her moth\u00ader had remar\u00adried and brought her to the vil\u00adlage. She has a con\u00adgen\u00adi\u00adtal heart con\u00addi\u00adtion, and even mod\u00ader\u00adate\u00adly stren\u00adu\u00adous activ\u00adi\u00adty (like walk\u00ading a few hun\u00addred meters in a row) becomes over\u00adwhelm\u00ading, requir\u00ading her to squat and rest. We learned about her lack of basic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion skills. We sym\u00adpa\u00adthized with her sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, but hes\u00adi\u00adtat\u00aded to accept her appli\u00adca\u00adtion. We asked oth\u00ader chil\u00addren to invite her moth\u00ader to the school. Her moth\u00ader explained that due to their finan\u00adcial dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties, they had\u00adn\u2019t been able to get her child surgery (though doc\u00adtors report\u00aded\u00adly believed it was a pos\u00adsi\u00adble cure). Con\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly, her sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion per\u00adsist\u00aded, with no school will\u00ading (or dar\u00ading) to accept her. We told her moth\u00ader that the school wel\u00adcomes this girl to attend class\u00ades and study at any time. She can do what she can and does not have to fol\u00adlow the cur\u00adricu\u00adlum. She can go to any class she wants (it is rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded to start with the low\u00ader grades). Accord\u00ading to our brief obser\u00adva\u00adtion, this girl has cer\u00adtain learn\u00ading and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion skills, and is very eager to study. We hope that her par\u00adents can over\u00adcome dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties and try to pick her up and drop her off every day. If not, please ask oth\u00ader class\u00admates to accom\u00adpa\u00adny her to and from school.<\/p>\n

6. After school in the after\u00adnoon, I walked a group of chil\u00addren back to their near\u00adby homes and stopped by to vis\u00adit their fam\u00adi\u00adlies. A short 10-minute walk took us a full hour and a half. The chil\u00addren were so enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic, they kept me com\u00adpa\u00adny, chat\u00adting and play\u00ading along the way. When I got home, they made sure to give me some\u00adthing: fruit, flow\u00aders, bis\u00adcuits, min\u00ader\u00adal water, milk, and so on. Although they were only a hand\u00adful, they still filled me up. Most of the par\u00adents were away, but the vil\u00adlagers I met enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly exclaimed \u201cThank you! Thank you!\u201d upon hear\u00ading the teacher had arrived. When I final\u00adly said good\u00adbye to the chil\u00addren, they kept chant\u00adi\u00adng \u201cGood\u00adbye, teacher! Good\u00adbye, teacher!\u201d until I was out of sight.

\nFrom what I\u2019ve observed, the vil\u00adlagers here have done a good job of self-help pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, and their reset\u00adtle\u00adment has been good. Some of the bet\u00adter-off fam\u00adi\u00adlies have already had elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. Next, I intend to apply to the vil\u00adlage com\u00admit\u00adtee to have elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty con\u00adnect\u00aded to the school as well.

\nAside from the lack of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, the con\u00adstant rain and the extreme humid\u00adi\u00adty, which made the teach\u00aders\u2019 accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtions dif\u00adfi\u00adcult, the school was in excel\u00adlent con\u00addi\u00adtion in every way. Every\u00adone jok\u00ading\u00adly said it felt like a resort. The vol\u00adun\u00adteers were reluc\u00adtant to leave, and the chil\u00addren were even more attached.
